LUCKNOW: The political heartland of India will witness voting on 14 seats, including a couple of high-profile constituencies and fate of five Union ministers, in the fifth phase on May 20. The 14 seats comprise not only Congress citadels Rae Bareli and Amethi but also Ayodhya, the nerve centre of BJPs Hindutva plank. In fact, this phase will decide the tone and tenor of the sixth and seventh rounds, which will be concentrated across 27 seats of Purvanchal. Moreover, four constituencies of Bundelkhand will decide whether to let BJP achieve a hat-trick or vote for change. The BJP had swept the phase in 2019 by winning 13 of the 14 seats in fray. While the BJP had wrested Amethi from Congress, Sonia Gandhi had retained Rae Bareli as the only party MP from UP in 2019. The SP and BSP drew a blank in 2019 and 2014. In 2024, while Congress is contesting on two seats, ally SP is contesting on rest 12 seats. Rae Bareli One of the most prominent seats of fifth phase is set for a fight between Rahul Gandhi and BJP MLC and Yogi minister Dinesh Pratap Singh who had switched over to the saffron party in 2018. BSP has fielded an OBC nominee. Amethi Another high-profile seat witnesses a battle of nerves between Union minister Smriti Irani and KL Sharma, a representative of Congress first family of four decades. Smriti had defeated Rahul Gandhi in 2019 in Amethi and she is seeking a second term. BSP has fielded Nanhe Singh Chauhan. Faizabad The seat of Ram temple is set to test BJPs Hindutva plank. However, Faizabad has never been the saffron stronghold in the true sense. The Congress captured the seat in 2009, BSP won it in 2004 and SP in 1998. The BJP won the seat in 1991, 1996, 2014 and 2019. In 2019, BJPs Lallu Singh, five-time MLA and an MP twice, retained it defeating SPs Anand Sen. This time the contest is multi-cornered with SP having fielded its nine-time MLA Awdhesh Prasad, CPI former IPS officer Arvind Sena and BSP Sachhidanand Pandey. Lucknow The real challenge before the BJP is winning margin of MP Rajnath Singh who is seeking a third term carrying forward the legacy of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had represented Lucknow five times in the Lok Sabha from 1991 and 2004. Lucknow parliamentary constituency is the BJPs citadel. The party has never lost this seat since 1991. Singh won the seat in 2014 and 2019. Mohanlal Ganj and Barabanki Both the reserve seats are adjacent to Lucknow with Pasi community holding the key. All Eyes on Election Results in Star Constituencies

VIJAYAWADA: All eyes are set on the election results of the star Assembly and Parliament constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, where top party leaders are testing their luck. These mainly include Chief Minister and YSRC chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Opposition leader and Telugu Desam chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan and BJP state president Daggubati Purandeswari. Analysts and punters are engaged in a lot of speculations on the margins, wins and defeats of the top leaders. The total voting percentage in Pulivendula Assembly constituency where the Chief Minister is contesting was 81.34. There were 2,29,687 voters in there, out of which 1,86,833 cast their votes. Many believe it would be a cakewalk for Jagan Mohan Reddy in Pulivendula due to his past and present involvement with the constituency and performance as CM. Jagan Mohan Reddy won Pulivendula with a majority of 90,110 votes in the 2019 elections. The YSRC expects this to cross one lakh this time, while the Opposition hopes to reduce the majority. In Kuppam, the home constituency of Chandrababu Naidu, the total voters were 2,25,775. The voting percentage registered in the present election is 89.88. Some 1,01,306 males and 1,01,608 females voted. The Chief Minister along with leaders like Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy concentrated on the Kuppam Assembly constituency for the past three years. Their efforts yielded good results as the YSRC registered a clean sweep in the local body and municipal elections. This time, Jagan Mohan Reddy fielded a young K.R.J. Bharath against stalwart Chandrababu Naidu. Chandrababu, who never stayed in Kuppam, did not conduct a vast campaign during the earlier elections but this time, he stayed in Kuppam with his wife Bhuvaneswari to reassure the voters that he was available to them. He is constructing a house there to prove a point. Naidu reached the constituency half a dozen times during the election campaign. In Managalagiri, Nara Lokesh worked a lot, aiming to register a win this time. The YSRC fielded a woman candidate Murugudu Lavanya, who belongs to a prominent political family that is familiar with the Mangalagiri people. The constituency has 2,92,432 voters, of which 1,21,038 men and 1,29,697 women cast their votes, registering a 85.74 per cent polling this time. Lokesh faced defeat in the 2019 polls at the hands of Alla Ramakrishna Reddy. The YSRC is banking on BC votes, and aims to defeat Lokesh with support from the weavers community that is dominative in Mangalagiri. The results of the Pithapuram Assembly segment, from where Jana Sena president and cine actor Pawan Kalyan contested, are also awaited with a lot of eagerness. In the 2019 elections, Pawan Kalyan lost from two constituencies. This time, he pressed huge numbers of leaders and cadres in Pithapuram to avert another disaster. There are 2,36,409 voters in Pithapuram, of which 1,03,370 males and 1,01,438 females cast their votes, registering a 86.63 per cent polling. The YSRC fielded a strong woman candidate, Vanga Geetha, who gave a tough fight to Pawan. State BJP president Daggubati Purandeswari entered the fray in Rajamahendravaram LS constituency against YSRC aspirant Guduri Srinivas this time. Interestingly, Congress senior leader Gidugu Rudra Raju was also in the fray there. The total voters are 16,23,149 in Rajamahendravaram LS, of which 6,47,491 males and 6,66,081 females cast their votes, registering 80.93 per cent polling. Curiously, gamblers and punters are investing huge sums vis-a-vis the results in these star Assembly and Parliament constituencies.

INDIA bloc will bulldoze Ram temple if it comes to power: PM Modi

LUCKNOW: Claiming that the opposition alliance, especially the Congress, had the intention of reversing the Supreme Court verdict on the Ram temple, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that if they come to power they would get the temple bulldozed. Addressing a poll rally in Zaidpur in Barabanki on Friday, PM Modi advised the INDIA bloc to learn from CM Yogi Adityanath where to run bulldozers. A senior SP leader had said on Ram Navami that the Ram temple is useless. At the same time, the Congress is preparing to overturn the Supreme Court's decision on the temple. For them, only their family and power matter. If the SP and Congress come to power, they will send Ram Lalla back to the tent and bulldoze the temple, he claimed while asking them to take uition from Adityanath as to where bulldozers should be used. The PM addressed three poll rallies in UP at Barabanki, Hamirpur and Fatehpur on Friday. Underlining that the power of a vote had ended a 500-year wait and led to the enthronement of Shri Ram Lalla in the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the PM took a dig at the opposition saying that they never felt bad witnessing Ram Lalla in a tent. When people used to see Ram Lalla in a tent under the sky, they would abuse the government of the day, said the PM. He launched a scathing attack on the opposition bloc claiming that it was an incohesive conglomerate of power-hungry forces. PM Modi said that opposition parties was still not sure of their PM face and were fighting amongst themselves for the position but would eventually disintegrate like a pack of cards after the Lok Sabha election results on June 4. Modis Babbua & new Bua jibe at Akhilesh and Mamata He added that the shehzada of SP (SP chief Akhilesh Yadav), had a heartbreak when a Congress leader claimed that the people of Rae Bareli would elect the next PM of India. PM Modi was reflecting on the statement of ex-Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel that after Indira Gandhi, the people of Rae Bareli were going to elect the Prime Minister of the country. He also hinted at the chinks in the INDI Alliance. Referring to the AAP and Congress, he said, An INDI alliance party has told the other not to mess with it in Punjab. The PM was seeking support for BJP candidate Rajrani Rawat in Barabanki and the partys Mohanlal Ganj candidate and Union Minister Kaushal Kishore. Aware of the caste dynamics of both the reserved constituencies, Modi accused the Congress of insulting SP stalwart and former MP Beni Prasad Verma, a tall Kurmi leader. Even now the SP shehzada is silent, he said. Maintaining that othing is bigger than vote bank for the SP-Congress, Modi said when he exposed them, they became restless and lost sleep. They start saying anything and start hurling abuses. This is a battle between BJP's policy of contentment vs INDIA bloc's appeasement politics: Modi The SP-Congress have surrendered to appeasement. And when Modi is telling the truth to the country, they say Modi is creating Hindu-Muslim divide. Even their vote bank has also started understanding the truth. Our mothers and sisters are happy with the law on triple talaq and are continuously blessing the BJP, Modi claimed. He said that the local MP from the opposition camp, if elected, will have just one task: abuse Modi day and night. People here should aspire for an MP who can work for them and develop their area and so the people have the only option of Kamal (lotus) , he said. Taking a swipe at SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, the PM said: The Babuaji here, the socialist prince, has now taken refuge under a new Buaji. Apparently referring to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Modi said: The new Buaji in Bengal has said that she would back the 'INDI alliance' from outside. In Fatehpur, the PM took a jibe at the Congress saying its aim was to win just 50 seats in the country so that it could save its honour. He also mocked Rahul Gandhi for contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Rae Baraeli instead of Amethi which he lost to the BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019. Taking a further swipe, Modi said, The dreams of 'panja' (Congress poll symbol) and 'cycle' (SP poll symbol) have shattered 'khata-khat, khata-khat'. Now they are planning for post-June 4 as to who should be blamed for the defeat 'khata-khat, khata-khat'. And, someone was telling me that tickets for foreign trips have also been booked 'khata-khat, khata-khat'. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had used the phrase Khata-khat khata-khat to claim that a fixed stipend would flow into the accounts of poor women if his party came to power. Addressing another rally in Hamirpur, the PM cautioned the people against the inheritance tax allegedly proposed in the Congress manifesto. He said the SP and the Congress would use people's votes to come to power and then gift a part of their property to those who carry out vote jihad for them. Today I have come to caution you against the SP and the Congress. They will take your vote, but after coming to power, they will distribute these gifts to those who do vote jihad for them, he said.

Spirituality Returns to Tirupati as Festivals Overshadow Politics

Tirupati: As Tirupati is witnessing Thataiahagunta Gangamma Jatara and Sri Govindaraja Swamy Brahmotsavam, political rivalries that had gripped the city in recent weeks have given way to peace and devotion. Thataiahagunta Gangamma Jatara, a local folk festival now recognised as a state festival, began on Tuesday and will go on until May 21, culminating in the Viswaroopa Darshan on May 22. The jatara is in honour of Goddess Gangamma, the younger sister of Lord Venkateswara. On the occasion, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) presented a Sare to the Goddess blessings from the elder brother. As is the tradition, TTD chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy carried the Pattu vastrams for Goddess Gangamma. Thousands of devotees joined the procession led by Karunakar Reddy from his residence to Thataiahagunta Gangamma Temple. On the other hand, Govindaraja Swamy Brahmotsavam began on Thursday with the auspicious hoisting of the Garuda Dhwaja Patam amidst Vedic chants. Earlier, priests paraded the Govindaraja, Dhwajapatam, Chakrattalwar and Parivara deities through the four Mada streets on Tiruchi. The evening featured a lively procession of Lord Govindaraja on Pedda Sesha vahanam, attracting thousands of devotees who offered Harathi to the deities. As per the Thataiahagunta Gangamma Temple's lore dating back to the era of local Tirupati chieftains, Gangamma rose to protect women from harassment and defeated the tyrants. In her remembrance, residents don disguises for seven days during the Jatara, symbolising the Goddess's tactics to lure out the tyrant. During the festival, households offer refreshing drinks like buttermilk and Ambali to the devotees, apart from Pongal.

'Retiring as a legend,' FIFA pays tribute to Chhetri as sporting fraternity joins in salute

'Retiring as a legend,' FIFA pays tribute to Chhetri as sporting fraternity joins in salute Football's world governing body FIFA led the outpouring of tributes that came in from different quarters following talismanic Indian captain Sunil Chhetri's decision to retire from international football. Chhetri, the long-serving national team captain announced his decision to call it a day after the FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6. ''Retiring as a legend,'' captioned FIFA World Cup in its 'X' handle to a graphic-generated photo of Chhetri sharing the podium with world football superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the three leading active international goalscorers. Ronaldo (128 goals) is seen on the top of the podium, while Messi (106) and Chhetri (94) takes the next two spots. FIFA had earlier in 2022 released a documentary on the long-serving Indian captain, titled 'Captain Fantastic'; it had three parts -- kick off, mid-game and extra time. Batting maestro Virat Kohli, 2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh and former star footballer Bhaichung Bhutia were among the leading sports personalities who lauded Chhetri's achievements. Commenting on Chhetri's video post on Instagram, Kohli wrote for his good friend: ''My brother. Proud.'' Yuvraj called him a legend, saying the legacy of the 39-year-old veteran of 150 national appearances will remain for a very long time. ''A real legend of the game who took Indian football onto the global stage. Your passion has inspired a generation to take up the game... your legacy in Indian sports will be remembered forever...you can look back with pride as you get set for your final game, thank you legend,'' wrote Yuvraj in an Instagram story. Chhetri, who made his international debut in 2005, has scored 94 goals for the country. He will leave the scene as India's all-time top scorer and most-capped player. Legendary India forward Bhutia, who Chhetri succeeded as captain, told PTI that it was a great loss for Indian football. ''Sunil, no doubt, will go down as one of the greatest players India had ever produced. His contribution to Indian football is immense. It's a great loss for Indian football,'' said Bhutia, the former India captain. ''I am fortunate to have played with him as senior player. When I came in (I M) Vijayan was senior to me, after that Sunil (Chhetri) came. I am fortunate to have served Indian football in between two stalwarts of Indian football,'' added Bhutia. Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, member of the India squad for the T20 World Cup, wished Chhetri a ''happy retirement''. ''What a run you have had! Congratulations on an amazing career,'' wrote Chahal on 'X', while Chhetri's Bengaluru FC and India team-mate, goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, wished he could change his compatriot's mind. ''Never wanted to see this happen, I wish I could do something to change your mind but I also understand why it is happening bhai. The whole country needs to celebrate your international career on the 6th of June the way you deserve. My Captain,'' Sandhu wrote on 'X'. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) said Chhetri will continue to motivate the coming generations. ''Your legacy on and off-the-field will always be remembered! You have always been and will continue to inspire us. Thank you.'' BCCI termed Chhetri a ''phenomenal icon'', saying his ''career has been nothing short of extraordinary and you have been a phenomenal icon for Indian football and Indian sports,'' while India spinner Kuldeep Yadav congratulated the legend on a ''fantastic career''. IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru saluted the No. 11 jersey, saying, ''What a ride this has been, skipper! 94 international goals, so many laurels, an unbroken conviction and you've inspired so many young Indians to dream big. Happy farewell to the No.11 (No.9) but India's 1,'' wrote RCB on 'X'.

Shaken by the Fico assassination attempt, the EU wonders if June elections can be free of violence

Shaken by the Fico assassination attempt, the EU wonders if June elections can be free of violence In an increasingly vitriolic political climate, the last thing needed in the runup to the June European Union elections was an assassination attempt on one of the bloc's most controversial figures. As Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico lay recovering from Wednesday's attack, the sheer violence of five shots targeted at a politician merely for doing his job immediately had a whole continent worried ahead of the June 6-9 polls. Across the 27-nation EU, the political landscape is becoming increasingly polarized, with no holds barred between mainstream parties on the one hand and the bellicose populists and extremists on the other. It is shocking to see that someone can become the victim of his political ideas. Three weeks ahead of the elections, that is extremely alarming, said Prime Minister Alexander De Croo of Belgium, which holds the EU presidency. Let's make it an intense campaign when it comes to words, but not beyond that, De Croo told the regional broadcaster VRT. It is already too late for that. In Germany last week, a prominent Berlin politician was violently assaulted and suffered injuries to her head and neck. A week earlier, a candidate from the party of Chancellor Olaf Scholz was beaten up while campaigning for next month's election for the European Parliament and had to undergo surgery. The politics of compromise laid the foundations for Europe's famed welfare society, but in recent years, aggressive discourse and unbridled partisanship have been on the rise. There was dialogue and with political plodding, solutions emerged. But now, all too often, that doesn't work anymore, said Prof. Hendrik Vos of Ghent University. Slovakia is a case in point. Fico's mastery of confrontational politics brought him back from the political wilderness and helped secure him a third term in office. Fico campaigned on a pro-Russian, anti-American platform, a foreign policy liberated from its EU links, a tougher stance on migration and opposition to LGBTQ+ rights. After he returned to power last year, he immediately set about dismantling the office of the anti-corruption prosecutor and bringing the public broadcaster, RTVS, under tighter government control. However, concerns in the EU about democratic backsliding and the rule of law have now been overtaken by events on the ground. Fico's politics may be a threat to democracy, but this kind of violence in European politics is a much bigger threat, political scientist Tom Theuns, of Leiden University, told The Associated Press. In this period of polarization at European level, we see that the quality of democratic discourse has gone backward and politicians are increasingly depicted as enemies, both by other politicians and by the general public, Theuns said. Such discourse to increasingly see each other as enemies' legitimizes violence in the eyes of those who could possibly use it.'' As Fico lay in hospital, outgoing President Zuzana Caputova, one of his staunchest opponents, pleaded to step out of the vicious circle of hatred and mutual accusations. Caputova acknowledged that ''the tense atmosphere of hatred was our collective work. Even Fico himself was predicting that the blaze would rage out of control: on April 10, he posted on Facebook that he would expect a slaying of a leading politician and blamed the media, long a target of his ire. In 2018, he stepped down amid mass street protests after an investigative journalist who had been reporting on tax-related crimes implicating some in Fico's party, was murdered, along with his fiance. It is too early to say what impact, if any, the attack on Fico would have on the EU elections, since they are highly compartmentalized in 27 separate polls in the member states. In Slovakia, though, the effect is likely to be felt, predicted Juraj Majcin, analyst at the European Policy Center think tank in Brussels. The attack certainly won't help the less extreme parties,'' he said, adding that the ''chances are that the people will be more motivated to go and vote for people like Fico. Even if Fico and his Smer party do well in the elections, their influence in the European Parliament is limited: his tiny parliamentary fraction has even been suspended by the socialist group. Fico himself wields more influence at the summits of EU leaders, where often he can threaten to veto items of business that displease him. Rather, the Slovak leader is part of a much larger continental shift toward populist parties of the left and right, a move away from the center ground and the often messy compromises of the once-dominant big-tent parties such as the Christian Democrats and Socialists. Fico is the latest in a surprisingly long list of political victims in postwar Europe. For all their non-confrontational politics of the postwar years, leaders have fallen victims to extremists before. Perhaps most infamously, Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palme was murdered in 1986, and foreign minister Anna Lindh was also in office when killed in 2003. German stalwart Wolfgang Schaeuble, a key figure in the reunification of Germany and the EU financial crisis a decade ago, survived an assassination attempt in 1990 but was left permanently disabled. A similar fate befell about a half dozen politicians, former and active, in the EU. And even when nothing serious happens, the threat alone can have a massive impact. On Thursday, anti-Islam firebrand Geert Wilders became the power behind the throne in a new Dutch government that is throwing overboard compromise politics to set up the most radical rightwing coalition since the war. Wilders has always thrived on confrontation that some equaled to hate speech. And he has never toned down the strident nature of his campaigning. He has had the highest level of security protection for two decades, since a jihadist website distributed a video calling for his beheading. Following the threat, he was temporarily moved to a safe house. Wilders now travels in an armored car, surrounded by security personnel. The Dutch security services purchased a home and converted it into a permanent safe house. The danger is far from abstract: in 2002, maverick Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn, a precursor of today's far right, was murdered by an animal rights activist. During a court hearing last year over death threats made against him by Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif, Wilders said of the measures You never get used to all that. You learn to deal with it, but you never get used to it.

And while handy and worth keeping around, version 4.15.3, continues to suffer from the same overreach we mentioned previously when reviewing this software. The modules are Smart Scan, System Junk, Mail Attachments, Trash Bins, Malware Removal, Privacy, Optimization, Maintenance, Uninstaller, Updater, Extensions, Space Lens, Large & Old Files, and Shredder. Each module performs various tasks. The Smart Scan is the overarching umbrella feature, hunting down extraneous files that can be deleted to clear drive space, performing a quick malware scan, and executing a speed test to look into optimization functions, such as freeing up RAM or quickly clearing system caches. CleanMyMac X runs a handy set of maintenance scripts, such as clearing the DNS cache and repairing file permissions, which help to keep things in order. CleanMyMac X is routinely updated (in the 4.15 update in February 2024 the security components got a major update) and is well cared for by its developer. CleanMyMac X gained a handy Menu Bar item in version 4.11 that brought useful information, such as drive capacities, CPU speeds, system temperature, system load, and network activity readouts. This received a substantial update in 2023, bringing additional information such as your laptops battery, temperature, and health, your hard drives capacity and overall health, your free RAM capacity, and your CPU load and hardware temperature are on hand and readily accessible. The Space Lens feature that arrived with the 2023 update, and the Large & Old Files module, offer a quick and handy view as to whats consuming the majority of your hard drive space, and it was easy to pick off large, forgotten multi-gigabyte video files as well as gigabytes upon gigabytes of unused language and cache files with the System Junk module. Other features such as the Disk Lens and Uninstaller offered a clear view as to which folders were consuming the most drive space and a quick means of removing applications. Removing an app with CleanMyMac Xs Uninstall module. Removing an app with CleanMyMac Xs Uninstall module. Foundry Removing an app with CleanMyMac Xs Uninstall module. Foundry Foundry Whats not so good Unfortunately, its the same sticking points that Ive mentioned in the past that seem to haunt CleanMyMacX 4.15. With Mac utilities, a multifaceted approach that offers several base functions can be excellent. But the danger is that the developer overextends themselves trying to be everything to everyone, and the result is that some features arent as good as others, making you wonder about the value of the total app. This is unfortunately the case with CleanMyMac X. CleanMyMac X has a couple of modules that are the apps greatest hurdles: the Malware removal module and the Updater function. Both are well-intentioned and focused, but unfortunately, they dont work as well as we hoped. Malware protection remains a mixed bag, and while the app works well with macOS Gatekeeper function in working to prevent malware installation on your Mac, its still possible to install a good amount of questionable software. Yes, the Malware Removal module was able to detect and quarantine several threats (such as OSX.EvilEgg, DazzleSpy, and parts of the AdWind malware), but it left segments of AdWind installed in tests, as well as missed the questionable WaveBrowser, a mock version of Adobe Flash Player Install Manager, Adobe album and the infamous MacSecurity app, which had to be removed with another application. This was disappointing considering MacPaws well-marketed and hyped use of the Moonlock Engine for this purpose. Other foibles within the Malware Removal module include the fact that while its easy to select for external volumes to be scanned upon mounting, theres no clear display as to this happening, or an easy option to select a target volume and begin a scan, which would be a handy user interface option. For some better antivirus options, if that is what you are after read our round-up of the Best Antivirus for Mac . Malware protection settings in CleanMyMac X 4.15.3. Malware protection settings in CleanMyMac X 4.15.3. Foundry Malware protection settings in CleanMyMac X 4.15.3. Foundry Foundry If the Malware Removal module needs improvements, the Updater module is in even rougher shape. This section of the software feels as if almost nothing has been done with it, and the only update it was able to detect and install was a small screenshot AI update through Apples App Store. These scans missed significant app updates to critical programs such as GitHub, Slack, Google Chrome, Adobe Reader, VirtualBox, and others, and one wonders how it can be so hard to add support for these developers for the module to find and locate free updates that the developers would want the users to have in the first place? Verdict CleanMyMac X (version 4.15.3 at the time we updated this review) offers a good suite of utilities, but unless a major new version or upgrade is en route, MacPaw seems to be making the same mistakes again. Despite the companys use of the Moonlock Engine for its Malware Removal module, it still left significant chunks of malware behind and this is concerning. The rough state of the Updater module once again leads one to consider the MacUpdater , which is $9.76 for an individual user, is tightly focused on its task, and has become my standby for locating just about every software update I could dream of for my Macs. I dont think MacPaw is ill-intentioned in its efforts by any stretch of the imagination and its customer service has always been responsive, but I do think its wandering into the same issues that any company has when it tries to make a Swiss Army knife of an application suite and keeps adding to its feature base. Some features invariably become better than others, and unless theres a major new version or update that comes out, it seems as if these issues may not be fixed in short order. CleanMyMac X runs well, does its chief job of recovering space on a Mac superbly, and is available at a good price, but without a significant overhaul for its Malware Removal and Updater modules, it wont be able to deliver on the vast amount it promises. Indian football icon Chhetri revered by global sporting fraternity

Indian football icon Chhetri revered by global sporting fraternity Batting maestro Virat Kohli, 2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh and former star footballer Bhaichung Bhutia were among the leading sports personalities who lauded Sunil Chhetri's achievements after the iconic India striker on Thursday announced his decision to retire from international football. Chhetri, the long-serving national team captain announced his decision to call it a day after the FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6. Congress' KL Sharma to take on BJP's sitting MP Smriti Irani from Amethi Lok Sabha Constituency

Congress' KL Sharma to take on BJP's sitting MP Smriti Irani from Amethi Lok Sabha Constituency Amethi has been a stronghold of the Congress party for decades, until Bharatiya Janata Party leader Smriti Irani won the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ending the Gandhi family's stint there. Amethi, the most-watched seat in the fifth phase, will go to the polls on May 20. The results will be announced on June 4. The Amethi seat comprises five assembly segments, including Tiloi, Salon, Jagdishpur, Gauriganj, and Amethi. The constituency is a general seat. This time, Smriti Irani is pitted against Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, a longtime loyalist of the Gandhi family. The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) has named Nanhe Singh Chauhan. This is Iran's third election from Amethi after losing in 2014 to Rahul Gandhi by 1 lakh votes and winning in 2019 by a margin of around 55,000. In 2019, Irani got 468,514 voters with 49.7 per cent votes, while Rahul Gandhi got 413,394 voters with 43.9 per cent votes. Amethi, known as the Gandhi family bastion, was where party stalwarts like Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and top leader Rahul Gandhi contested successfully. The voters of Amethi remained loyal to Congress as they consistently elected members of the Nehru-Gandhi family or candidates backed by the party. In 1981, former PM Rajiv Gandhi won from Amethi and continued to represent the seat until his assassination in 1991. After his assassination, Congress' late Satish Sharma won the seat. Sharma continued to represent the seat in the Lok Sabha till 1998, when the BJP's Sanjaya Sinh defeated him. In 1999, Sonia Gandhi was a candidate for the seat and won it. Later in 2004, Sonia shifted to Rae Bareli, passing the baton to Rahul. Rahul Gandhi contested the polls from Amethi and remained an MP till 2019 until his defeat by Smriti Irani. Rahul Gandhi was a three-time MP from the seat from 2004 to 2019. There were speculations that the grand old party may field either Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the constituency against Smriti Irani but putting all the speculations to rest, Kishori Lal Sharma was fielded by the Congress party on the last day of nomination for phase 5. Kishori Lal Sharma, a close associate and loyalist of the Gandhi family, is originally from Punjab's Ludhiana. He has been working for the Congress Party in Amethi for years. Reacting to his candidature from Amethi, Sharma expressed gratitude to the Congress leadership and said that he would work hard to win the seat. I want to thank Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for giving me the opportunity to contest from their traditional seats. I will work very hard. Rahul Gandhi is not someone who runs away from the ground. No one can predict anything (about votes). I will meet Priyanka Gandhi today, he said. After Rahul Gandhi was named by the Congress as its candidate for the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat, Union Minister and BJP's candidate from Amethi, Smriti Irani, said that Congress conceded defeat from the constituency even before a vote was cast, adding that the opposition party would not have fielded a proxy candidate (Kishori Lal Sharma) if they were hopeful about the outcome of the polls. Meanwhile, Irani is questioning the Congress on what it has done for the constituency so far and accusing Rahul of abandoning the constituency after his 2019 loss to Irani. While KL Sharma is focusing on raking up his and the Gandhi family's connections with the constituency. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will run for the MP from Rae Bareli, where his mother was a five-time MP, before taking the Rajya Sabha route to the Parliament this year. Polling for 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh is being held across all seven phases. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. (ANI)

Stalwart Chhetri announces retirement, WC qualifier on June 6 to be his last game

Stalwart Chhetri announces retirement, WC qualifier on June 6 to be his last game The iconic Sunil Chhetri on Thursday announced his decision to retire from international football after the FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait on June 6, bringing the curtains down on a career that is unparalleled in Indian football for its longevity and consistency. The long-serving national team captain announced his decision via a video he posted on his social media accounts. Chhetri, who made his debut in 2005, has scored 94 goals for the country. He will leave the scene as India's all-time top scorer and most-capped player. He is also third in the list of goal scorers among active players behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and currently sits as the fourth in the all-time list of international goal-scorers as well. Chhetri, 39, will walk into international sunset after rendering yeoman service for nearly two decades, 19 years to be precise, to a team that was heavily reliant on the 5'7'' forward to deliver the goods every time he wore the blue jersey. ''The match Against Kuwait is the last,'' Chhetri said while announcing his decision. Chhetri's final match will be played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, and it is appropriate that he will end his journey in a city, where he has played a lot of his football while evolving into a potent striker. India are currently second in Group A with four points, behind leaders Qatar. Chhetri had made his 150th national appearance in March and scored on the occasion against Afghanistan in Guwahati. India, though, stunningly lost that game 1-2. On his international debut against Pakistan way back in 2005, Chhetri, who would go on to become one of the game's most lethal strikers, scored, and he rated it as his best moment. ''There is one day that I never forget and remember it quite often is the first time I played for my country man, it was unbelievable. ''But the day before, morning of the day, Sukhi sir (Sukhwinder Singh), my first national team coach, in the morning he came to me and he's like, you're going to start? I can't tell you how I was feeling man,'' Chhetri recalled. He added, ''I took my jersey, I sprayed some perfume on it, I have no idea why. So that day, everything that happened, once he told me, from breakfast to lunch and to the game and to my first goal in my debut, to conceding late in the 80th minute, that day is probably that I will never forget and is one of the best days of my national team journey.'' Speaking on the future of Indian football, Chettri said that it was time for the country to find the next 9. He felt the team is currently handicapped as none of the current lot of players play as the main striker for their respective clubs and sees the massive hole in the current national team. In recent times, Chhetri said he could sense that he was heading towards the end of his glorious journey. ''You know the feeling that I recollect in the last 19 years is a very nice combination between duty, pressure and immense joy. I never thought individually, these are the many games that I've played for the country, this is what I've done, good or bad, but now I did it. ''This last one and a half, two months, I did it and it was very strange. I did it because probably I was going towards the decision that this game, this next game is going to be my last.'' The moment he had arrived at the decision, memories came flooding back to his mind. ''And the moment I told myself first, that yes, this is the game that is going to be my last, is when I started recollecting everything. ''It was so strange, I started thinking about this game, that game, this coach, that coach, that team, that member, that ground, that away match, this good game, that bad game, all my individual performances, everything came, all the flashes came. So when I did decide that this is it, this is going to be my last game.'' His family members reacted differently to his big decision. ''I told my mom, my dad and my wife, my family first, my dad was...he was normal, he was relieved, happy, everything, but my mom and my wife started crying,'' he said. ''...they couldn't express to me as to why they burst into tears. It's not that I was feeling tired, it's not that I was feeling this or that, when the instinct came that this should be my last game, then I thought about it a lot.'' Among major successes, Chhetri helped India win the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012) as well as the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship (2011, 2015, 2021). He also played a part in India's 2008 AFC Challenge Cup win, which helped them qualify for the first AFC Asian Cup (2011) in 27 years. The Secunderabad-born footballer, who made his club debut for Mohun Bagan in 2002, went on to play for USA's Major League Soccer team Kansas City Wizards in 2010 as well as for the reserve team of the Sporting CP in the Portuguese football league back in 2012. The seven-time AIFF Player of the Year winner has also represented major Indian clubs like East Bengal (2008-2009), Dempo (2009-2010), and Indian Super League sides Mumbai City FC (2015-2016) and Bengaluru FC. In club football, he has tasted most success at Bengaluru FC, winning major trophies like the I-League (2014 and 2016), ISL (2019), Super Cup (2018). He also led Bengaluru FC to the AFC Cup final in 2016. Chhetri was felicitated ahead of his 150th outing for the Blue Tigers in the World Cup qualifier against Afghanistan in Guwahati.

Amit Shah invokes Satyajit Ray, takes Hirak Rani jibe at Mamata in Bengal poll rally

KOLKATA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over violence, corruption and polarisation in West Bengal, accusing the TMC government of snatching the rights of the poor. Taking a dig at the Mamata government, Shah claimed that had Oscar-awarded filmmaker Satyajit Ray been alive, he would have made a film Hirak Ranir Deshe (In the land of the diamond queen), depicting the misrule of the CM, instead of Hirak Rajar Deshe. Satyajit Ray was a great artist. He made a movie, Hirak Rajar Deshe. When Mamata Banerjees regime began, Satyajit Ray was not alive. Otherwise, he would have named the movie, Hirak Ranir Deshe. Mamata Banerjee is Hirak Rani, Shah said, addressing a poll rally in Hooghly. The 1980 classic, starring stalwarts Utpal Dutt and Soumitra Chatterjee, is a dystopian fantasy film that revolves around a tyrannical, megalomaniac king who crushes dissent and torments his subjects. Bengal is the land which gave us Vande Mataram and the national anthem Jana Gana Mana, and played a key role in freedom struggle. Both the communists and TMC tried to end nationalism and patriotism in Bengal, Shah said. The home minister said that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is a part of India and we will take it. After the abrogation of Article 370 by the government in 2019, peace has returned to Kashmir. But now we witness protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Earlier slogans of Azadi were heard here (Kashmir), now the same slogans are heard in PoK. Earlier stones were pelted here, now stones are pelted in PoK, he said. Cybercriminals misusing Quick Assist to perform social engineering attacks, Microsoft warns

Cybercriminals misusing Quick Assist to perform social engineering attacks, Microsoft warns Microsoft has issued a warning that cybercriminals are using a legitimate client management tool called Quick Assist to trick people into giving them remote access to their devices, ultimately deploying nasty ransomware. Quick Assist is a Microsoft application that enables a user to share their Windows or macOS device with another person over a remote connection. The tool is installed by default on devices running Windows 11. Microsoft Threat Intelligence researchers have been tracking Storm-1811 - a financially motivated cybercriminal group known to deploy Black Basta ransomware - since mid-April. The threat group was caught misusing Quick Assist to target users in social engineering attacks. The attack sequence begins with impersonation through voice phishing (called vishing) - a form of social engineering that involves callers luring targets into revealing sensitive information under false pretenses or tricking targets into carrying out actions on behalf of the caller. For example, threat actors might impersonate IT or help desk personnel, pretending to conduct generic fixes on a device. Once the target is deceived, the cybercriminals deliver malicious tools, including remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools like ScreenConnect and NetSupport Manager, malware like Qakbot, Cobalt Strike, and ultimately Black Basta ransomware. In response to the observed malicious activity, Microsoft is investigating the use of the Quick Assist application in these attacks and is working on improving the transparency and trust between helpers and sharers, and incorporating warning messages in the application to alert users about possible tech support scams. Microsoft recommends investing in advanced anti-phishing solutions like Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint which detects components of activity originating from Quick Assist sessions and the follow-on activity. To minimize the risk of such attacks, Microsoft recommends blocking or uninstalling Quick Assist and other remote management tools when not in use. If you suspect the person connecting to your device is engaging in malicious activity, disconnect immediately and report to your local authorities or relevant IT members within your organization.

Shah Accuses Naveen Patnaik of Blocking Ram Temple Participation

Bhubaneswar: Union home minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah on Wednesday attacked Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik by accusing that the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government headed by him very tactfully stopped the people of the state from participating in Prana Pratishta Utsav of Ram Lalla at Ayodhyas Ram Temple on January 22. He asserted that people of Odisha will not forgive Naveen Patnaik for his misdemeanour and vote him out of power this time. When the whole world was celebrating the Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla, Naveen Babu very cunningly deprived them of the opportunity to be part of this festival. This is a sheer act of ungratefulness, Shah said while addressing a grand public rally at Soroda in Ganjam district. Shah, as per political experts, hinted at the BJD government celebrating Jagannath Parikrama Pakalpa, a renovation programme of Lord Jagannath temples courtyard in Puri, in a grand style, apparently to divert the attention of Odisha people from all the euphoria that was created around the Prana Pratishta Utsav. The home minister also castigated the ruling BJD for not the Centres Ayushman Bharat healthcare programme saying CM Naveen Patnaik denied the scheme to people of Odisha fearing that it will account for rise in Prime Minister Narendra Modis popularity in the state. He also took a potshot at the BJD for rebranding the free rice provided by the Centre to the poor in the state. Naveen Babu! You have pushed Odisha backward by 25 years. People of Odisha have decided to say Bye-bye, Tata, Goodbye to you. You cannot any longer cheat them. Odisha will have a new government after the elections and an Odia will become the chief minister of the state, declared Shah. The home minister, while questioning the state government on its silence over the missing of Lord Jagannaths Ratna Bhandar keys, assured that the Narendra Modi government will ensure that the persons responsible for missing of the keys are brought to book and punished. He also told the people that the patrons of chit fund scamsters who have looted Odisha people to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore will also be strictly dealt with. The BJP stalwart said there had been a complete halt in extremism and Maoist activism in the country due to strong leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier, we used to see bloodshed caused by the Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. After Narendra Modi came to power at the Centre, he challenged them and destroyed the enemy camps in Pakistan soil. Now, bloodshed in Jammu and Kashmir has stopped and Maoist activities have also come to an end, said Shah. Later in the evening, Shah held a roadshow in Cuttack city seeking votes for the party's Lok Sabha candidate Bhartruhari Mahtab and MLA candidates.

Politicians and election officials offered cyber protection ahead of UK election

Politicians and election officials offered cyber protection ahead of UK election Politicians, election officials and other high risk individuals in Britain are to be offered support to help protect them from hacks by foreign spies ahead of an election expected later this year, the country's cyber experts said on Wednesday. The British government has spoken of a growing threat to democracy from people spreading disinformation and fake AI-created content online, to other states attempting to interfere in the political process. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and British security chiefs have warned that Russian intelligence and groups linked to the Chinese state were attempting to target British institutions and individuals, including lawmakers. In December, the foreign ministry imposed sanctions on two Russian hackers who it said were working on behalf of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) to target politicians, journalists and other groups by attacking their personal email inboxes. Moscow has said there is no evidence for allegations of a digital spying campaign. China has said Britain has repeatedly hyped allegations about Chinese spies and cyberattacks. The National Cyber Security Centre, part of Britain's GCHQ spy agency, said its assessment was that the accounts of election candidates and officials, were almost certainly attractive targets for cyber actors looking to carry out espionage operations. Individuals who play important roles in our democracy are an attractive target for cyber actors seeking to disrupt or otherwise undermine our open and free society, said Jonathon Ellison, NCSC director for national resilience and future technology. Thats why the NCSC has ramped up our support for people at higher risk of being targeted online to ensure they can better protect their accounts and devices from attacks. Those considered at risk will be able to obtain an extra layer of security on their personal devices to protect them from malware, spear-phishing - sending emails ostensibly from a trusted sender in order to induce individuals to reveal confidential information - and other threats.

Religion-based reservation dangerous; Cong wanted to implement it, says PM Modi at poll rally

NASHIK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday alleged the Congress during its previous rule wanted to allocate 15 per cent of the government budget for minorities and vowed not to allow splitting of budget or reservation in jobs and education on the basis of religion. Addressing an election rally at Pimpalgaon Baswant in north Maharashtra's Nashik district in support of Mahayuti candidates, Union minister Bharati Pawar (BJP) and Hemant Godse (Shiv Sena), the PM said splitting budget on religious lines was dangerous. The BJP's star campaigner maintained Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution, was firmly against religion-based reservation in jobs and education. Modi claimed the Congress, when in power at the Centre, had drawn up plans to allocate 15 per cent of the total budget to minorities. When I was the chief minister (of Gujarat), the Congress had brought up this proposal. The BJP opposed this move strongly and hence it could not be implemented. But the Congress wants to bring this proposal again, he told the gathering. The PM asserted Ambedkar was against religion-based quota, but the Congress wants to take away reservation rights of SCs/STs/OBCs and give them to Muslims. BJP wants over 400 seats to help RSS succeed in 'conspiracy' to abolish reservation: Congress Modi is the chowkidar (watchman) of rights of deprived sections of society and will never let the Congress take away their rights, the BJP stalwart declared. Modi said the ongoing Lok Sabha polls are about electing a prime minister who takes strong decisions for the country. In the last 10 years, the PM said, his government has provided free ration, water, electricity, houses and gas connections irrespective of religion. Welfare schemes are made for every one, he maintained. Without naming NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar, Modi said, An INDI alliance leader from Maharashtra knows the Congress is losing badly (in elections). So, he has suggested that small parties merge with the Congress so that it at least stands as an opposition party. When the duplicate Shiv Sena (referring to Sena UBT) merges with the Congress, I will remember Balasaheb Thackeray because the late leader dreamt of a grand Ram mandir in Ayodhya and abolishing Article 370, he added. BJP wants to destroy Constitution, scrap reservation: Rahul Gandhi

Pakistan captain Babar Azam surpasses stalwart batter Virat Kohli for elusive T20I record

Pakistan captain Babar Azam surpasses stalwart batter Virat Kohli for elusive T20I record Records toppled during Pakistan's third T20I clash against Ireland, which saw skipper Babar Azam surpass India's stalwart batter Virat Kohli's record. Pakistan bounced back after the first T20I upset and clinched back-to-back victories to seal the series. They prevailed over the hosts with a 6-wicket win in Dublin on Tuesday. Babar was at his best with the bat with his knock of 75 off 42 deliveries, which was laced with five maximums and six boundaries. With his splendid performance with the bat, he became the batter with the most 50-plus runs in the T20I format. This marked the 39th occasion when Babar struck more than 50 runs in the shortest format of cricket. Kohli has scored 50-plus runs in the T20I format 38 times while India skipper Rohit Sharma has achieved the feat 34 times. Among other records, Babar became the first Pakistan batter to score 25 runs in one over in the format against Ireland. He struck four sixes in Benjamin White's over for the first time in his career. Apart from dealing in sixes, Babar also took a single to amass 25 runs from a single over. In the third T20I, Babar forged a 139-run stand with Mohammad Rizwan (56) for the second wicket. Their partnership laid the foundation for Pakistan's success after Saim Ayub failed to provide an ideal start for the team. This marked the 10th-century partnership between the two Pakistan star batters in T20Is. They became the first pair to achieve the feat. Along with this, they also became the first pair to accumulate 3,000 runs in partnership. Ireland's experienced duo Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie have amassed 2,043 runs in partnership, while India's opening duo Rohit and KL Rahul have five-century partnerships in the shortest format of cricket. After the conclusion of their three-match series against Ireland, Pakistan will travel to England. This will be the final opportunity for Pakistan to find the combination that they desire before the World Cup. The four-match T20I series will begin on May 22 at Headingley Carnegie. Both teams will play the final match of the series on May 30 at The Oval, London. (ANI)

Good news for Sanjeeta Bhattacharya

BENGALURU: In season 1 of the newsroom drama 'The Broken News', Sanjeeta Bhattacharya plays wide-eyed trainee journalist Juhi Shergill. In season 2, she is still the same but has learnt some of the tricks of the trade. The show stars stalwarts like Shriya Pilgaonkar, Sonali Bendre, and Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead roles. Of all the actors, it was Pilgaonkar with whom she bonded the most. Shriya and I had hit it off right off the bat. We bonded the first week of meeting each other and then shooting Broken News again was like a party every day. Its great to have people on set who are genuine friends. Then work is fun, says Bhattacharya. Not just Pilgaonkar, Bhattacharya shared a good bond with Ahlawat, even though they didnt have much screen time together. Most of the preparation for her role was observational and the learning was from the peers on the set. The show was released the same week as Sanjay Leela Bhansalis Heeramandi but has managed to get the attention of the audience and has been getting good reviews. The show is getting its due for which I am grateful, says Bhattacharya. The audience as well as critics have been talking about its straightforward performance. But for Bhattacharya, its the sincerity of the show being closest to reality that makes it relatable to the viewer. Finally, we have a show which shows the reality and dangers that journalists put themselves in. Its not just external but also internal dilemmas that they go through. Their moral compass needs to be so strong, its not always easy. Even though its about journalism and journalists, I see others can put themselves in their shoes, she says. Her favourite thing about the show is its depiction of characters in grey light. The characters are not black or white, they are shades of grey. You can see the dark side of the character Radha and the good of Dipankar who is supposed to be the good guy, says Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya, whose last big screen release was Jawan, has missed experimenting with music. I am working on a bunch of projects which Im super excited about. And Im releasing a new single at the end of this month or the beginning of next month. Its the first time Im exploring Afro beats, says Bhattacharya.

Castlevania is coming to Dead by Daylight later this year

Dead by Daylight fans can check out the Dungeons and Dragons chapter starting today, but Behaviour Interactive teased another high-profile crossover during an anniversary showcase on Tuesday. A Castlevania chapter is on the way to DbD . There aren't any details yet about what that will include, but you just might get to play as Alucard or Simon Belmont in the fog. Behaviour plans to divulge more info about the Castlevania tie-up, which will arrive later this year, in August. As for the Dungeons and Dragons chapter, which brings a dark fantasy element to DbD for the first time, Behaviour spilled the beans on that during the stream. PC players will be able to try out the chapter on the public test build today before it goes live for everyone on June 3. Behaviour Interactive The new killer is Vecna (the D&D version rather than the Stranger Things baddie) and stalwart video game actor and Critical Role mastermind Matt Mercer is voicing the character. The latest survivor is actually two identities in one. It's a bard character that you can opt to play as an elf female or human male, bringing a slight element of D&D-style character creation to DbD . The chapter will also include a new map, which (surprise, surprise) is a dungeon. Whenever you're up against Vecna, you'll be able to find treasure chests which will trigger a roll of a 20-sided die when opened. Rolling a one will net you a nasty surprise while getting a 20 grants you a powerful magical item. Roll any number in between and you'll get a helpful item. Speaking of maps, there will be larger ones to check out in an upcoming new mode. DbD has long pitted four survivors against one killer. A pair of killers will soon be able to team up and hunt eight survivors. They'll be able to take advantage of team powers too. There will be a lot of changes for this 2 vs. 8 mode, which will be around for a limited time at first. Perks will be jettisoned in favor of a class system, and there won't be any hooks. Downed survivors will instead go straight to a cage. If a survivor is caged three times, they're out of the game. Behaviour sees this as more of a party mode as opposed to the competitive nature of 1 vs. 4. The 2 vs. 8 mode is slated to arrive later this summer, and you can expect to find out more about it in July. Behaviour also had some news about several DbD spinoff games that are in the works. The Casting of Frank Stone is a single-player, narrative-focused game set in the DbD universe and developer Supermassive has released the first gameplay trailer. The spinoff tells the story of a group of young people who venture into a condemned steel mill in 1980 while attempting to film their own horror movie. There, they discover evidence of crimes committed by serial killer Frank Stone. The gameplay sounds very familiar for those who have experience of previous Supermassive games like Until Dawn and The Quarry . The direction of the story will shift based on your narrative decisions and how you handle environmental puzzles and quick-time events. The Casting of Frank Stone , which is said to be about five to seven hours long, is slated to arrive later this year. An untitled co-op shooter spinoff from Midwinter Entertainment is still in early development, but it now has a codename: Project T. It'll be a third-person game and unlike the survivors in DbD , you'll actually be able to fight back against enemies using guns. Fans who want to find out more can sign up for an insider program , which will include updates, closed playtests and the chance to provide feedback. That's not all though, as Behaviour announced yet another DbD spinoff. What the Fog is a two-person co-op roguelike that it developed in-house. The premise is that DbD survivors Claudette and Dwight are sucked into a cursed board game, Jumanji -style. The game is mainly played in third-person, but if you die you'll move into a bird's-eye support mode, where you can help your teammate survive. Just like in DbD , you'll need to interact with a hook to revive your ally. There's a single-player mode, while Feng Min is an unlockable character. Behaviour Interactive What the Fog shares some elements with DbD . You'll need to pick up tokens called blood points by roaming the map and killing enemies. These let you activate generators so you can escape a room. You'll get a buff from each generator and acquire a weapon upgrade after each round. There are bosses to take down too. What the Fog also has a more cartoony look than DbD 's more realistic art style. I've played a few rounds of the single-player mode and I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. The metal soundtrack and monster-slaying chaos actually reminds me a bit of the Doom series. After unlocking a door, I'd suggest sticking around in the room a while longer to kill some more enemies and snag a bunch of blood points. That way, you'll be able to repair the next room's generators quickly and power up before taking on a fresh army of monsters. What the Fog is available now on Steam. The first 2 million copies are available for free, though you'll need a Behaviour account to claim one. If you're not quick enough to snag a free copy or just feel like giving Behavior a few bucks, the game costs $5. UN International Staff Member Killed in Gaza Crossfire

UN International Staff Member Killed in Gaza Crossfire A former Indian Army officer, who had joined one of the UN agencies three weeks ago, was killed in war-torn Rafah in Gaza, becoming the ''first international casualty'' for the world body since the Israel-Hamas conflict started last year. The United Nations has called for a full investigation while Israel has ordered a separate investigation into the attack. Col Waibhav Anil Kale, 46, who took premature retirement from the Indian Army in 2022, joined the UN as a Security Coordination Officer in the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) recently, officials in New Delhi said on Tuesday. Kale, who had commanded the 11 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles in Kashmir and had been an instructor at the armys Infantry School in Mhow, was travelling along with another DSS staffer to the European Hospital in Rafah when their UN vehicle was struck on Monday morning. The other person, not identified, was seriously injured. ''Kale had joined as a security service coordinator with the UN three weeks ago. The former infantry officer decided to join the UN to pursue his career and also because he was keen on humanitarian mission work, his brother-in-law Wing Commander Prashant Karde (Retd) told PTI in Mumbai. He is survived by wife Amruta and two teenage children, Karde said. ''The last rites of the 46-year-old will be held in Pune in two days after his body is flown via Cairo. His mortal remains will land either in Mumbai or Pune depending on the availability of flights, Karde, a senior commander with IndiGo, said. Kale had joined the Indian Army in 1998 and had also served as Contingent Chief Security Officer with the United Nations between 2009 and 2010, Karde said. According to his LinkedIn profile, he earned his B.A. from the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and had degrees in Behavioral Science and International Humanitarian Law and had studied at, among other institutions, the Indian Institute of Management at Lucknow and Indore. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was deeply saddened to learn of the death of a United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) staff member and injury to another DSS staffer. A statement by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that Guterres condemned all attacks on UN personnel and called for a full investigation. Guterres sent his condolences to the family of the fallen staff member. ''With the conflict in Gaza continuing to take a heavy toll not only on civilians but also on humanitarian workers the Secretary-General reiterates his urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and for the release of all hostages, the statement added. In a post on X, Guterres said the UN vehicle was struck in Gaza, killing one of our colleagues & injuring another and said, more than 190 UN staff have been killed in Gaza. Responding to questions on the incident during a press briefing, Haq said at this point, We are in the process of informing the relevant governments and the relevant family members...'' He added that they were international staff and confirmed that this is, in fact, the first international UN casualty. While there have been international casualties involving workers for the World Central Kitchen in Gaza, Haq said that of UN staff, I believe I've not been previously aware of an international casualty. Haq added that the vehicle was headed to the hospital as part of their regular work. They go to different locations to assess security conditions. And this was the European hospital in Rafah. When asked for details about how their vehicle was struck, Haq said We're still accumulating details. We expect to get reports, including from the relevant authorities. He added that close to 190 UN personnel have been killed in Gaza since October 7, most of them national staff of the UN Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA. Haq added that the UN is going to set up measures for accountability. A lot of that ultimately requires an end to the conflict so that we can work these out, but we will be working with the authorities on the ground to get restitution for all of those who have been killed. Haq said he did not have the full details of whether the vehicle that was struck was part of a large convoy. I believe it was in a convoy that was moving, and this was the DSS vehicle that was hit. The BBC reported that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed it had received a report from the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) that said two of its workers were injured in the Rafah area - in southern Gaza - on Monday. The Israeli military said an initial inquiry indicated the vehicle was struck in an active combat zone and it had not been made aware of its route, BBC reported. But the UN said the vehicle was clearly marked and its planned movements had been announced in advance to Israeli authorities. Rolando Gomez, a UN spokesman in Geneva, said the UN informs Israeli authorities of the movement of all its convoys in Gaza. ''This is a standard operating procedure. That was the case yesterday morning,'' the BBC quoted Gomez telling journalists at a news briefing. Footage posted on social media and verified by the BBC shows a marked UN vehicle with multiple bullet holes outside the European Hospital. The Permanent Mission of India to the UN condoled Kales death with a post on X: We are deeply saddened by the loss of Col Waibhav Kale, working for the UN Department of Safety and Security in Gaza. Our deepest condolences are with the family during this difficult time. In April, seven members of the World Central Kitchen were killed in an IDF strike in Gaza. One of those killed in the airstrike was Zomi Frankcom, an Australian of Indian descent, according to reports. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that between October 7, 2023, and May 12, 2024, at least 35,091 Palestinians have been killed and 78,827 injured in Gaza. More than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, including 33 children, were killed in Israel, the vast majority on October 7, when Hamas attacked Israel. Meanwhile, as his family awaited the mortal remains, Kales brother in law said, Waibhav left the army three years ago and had settled in Pune. He hailed from Nagpur and had studied at the Somalwar High School there. During his more than two decades-long career in the military, Kale served in the northeast and also at the Siachen glacier. He was a former deputy commander of Rashtriya Rifles in Kashmir and was part of counterintelligence and counter-terrorism operations, he said. Kales brother Group Captain Vishal Kale is a senior officer in the Indian Air Force, and his cousin Colonel Amey Kale is also in the army.

This Is The Right Time: Rob Key On James Anderson's Test Retirement At Lord's

Test Match Special County Cricket: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key feels that veteran pacer James Anderson's decision to draw a curtain on his Test career came at the 'right time' for the country. Last week, Anderson announced that the first Test against West Indies at Lord's, starting on July 10, will be his final red-ball game for the country. The 41-year-old is the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket as a pacer with 700 scalps in 187 matches. Key, a former England batter, was part of the discussion panel along with head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes that led to the pacer's retirement. We said, 'We think its time for us to move on, that we have to start looking towards the future'. This is the right decision and this is the right time. Hopefully, he gets a fantastic end at Lord's, Key told the Test Match Special County Cricket podcast. Key said that the discussion with Anderson lasted for one and a half-hour and the pacer was not 'expecting' it would lead end of his red-ball future. When we made the decision and thought we needed to meet Jimmy to discuss the future, Brendon concluded that the right thing to do was to fly over to England, said Key. We had a conversation for about an hour and a half, which Baz led. I dont think Jimmy was expecting it, but I dont think it was completely unexpected. We felt it was right that Jimmy and the public had the opportunity to say goodbye. We didnt impress upon him that he needed to make the decision there and then. Not so long ago he decided the Lords game would be his last, he added. In the absence of two stalwart England pacers -- Anderson and Stuart Broad, Key sees it as the door for youngsters to grab a spot. People need the opportunity to learn to bowl with the new ball, to go through a days worth of Test cricket and back it up the next day. Now is the time for people to start learning that, he said. After the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA, England will host the West Indies for a three-Test series, with matches scheduled at the Lord's, Nottingham and Birmingham, respectively.

iOS 17 superguide: Eveything you need to know about the latest update

Macworld Apple launched new iPhones in 2023, but there was also an iPhone update available for all iPhones from the iPhone XR up: iOS 17. The iOS 17 software update was made available to hundreds of millions of iPhones on Monday, September 18, 2023. New features in iOS 17 include contact posters, NameDrop, StandBy, Live Voicemail, FaceTime video voicemail, a whole new Siri voice recognition model, huge improvements to autocorrect and dictation, and a lot more. Its almost like getting a new iPhone without paying a penny. In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about iOS 17, including all the features and any issues that arise, as well as keeping tabs on the latest version and what is coming in the next update. Development of iOS 17 is likely to slow down now that Apple is working on iOS 18 development. We expect to learn more about the next version of iOS at WWDC in June. Update May 14: Apple has released iOS 17.5, read on to find out whats included. iOS 17: Whats the latest version? The initial iOS 17 release was on September 18, but just days later on September 21 Apple issued iOS 17.0.1 with three zero-day security patches that may have been actively exploited. More information here: Apple pushes out critical iOS 17.0.1 update just days after iOS 17 release. That same day there was a iOS 17.0.2 update for iPhone 15 models that fixed a bug for new iPhone buyers. Some users who bought new iPhone 15 models discovered that they were not able to transfer data from an old iPhone during the new iPhone setup process . This same fix was then issued for other iPhones on September 27. All new iPhones should be updated to iOS 17.0.2 before attempting a data transfer from an old iPhone. iOS 17.0.3 arrived on October 4 with a fix for a problem that was causing iPhones to overheat specifically the iPhone 15 Pro. There are also two security fixes, more here: iOS 17.0.3 is out with iPhone 15 Pro overheating fix and security updates. Next up was iOS 17.1 , which arrived on October 25. New features include improvements to AirDrop (file transfers continue over the internet when you are out of range), new StandBy options, Favorites in Music and a number of bug and security fixes. Then iOS 17.1.1 arrived, which was a minor update fixing a couple of bugs. One bug related to Apple Pay and other NFC features becoming unavailable on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in BMW cars, the other bug related to the Weather Lock Screen widget which might not correctly display snow. iOS 17.1.2 on November 30 fixed a couple of WebKit security vulnerabilities that have been exploited in the wild. WebKit being the browser engine used by Safari. iOS 17.2 arrived on December 11 and included the Journal app, new Weather and Clock widgets, and Stickers for Message reactions. On January 22 Apple released iOS 17.3 . The update includes a new Stolen Device Protection feature that should make it harder for thieves to mess up your digital life using a stolen passcode. iOS 17.3 also includes an important security patch for a zero-day vulnerability that may have been exploited. Apple released iOS 17.4 on March 5, just before the deadline to comply with the Digital Markets Act in the EU. It included mandated changes to allow app developers to distribute apps outside of Apples App Store and use payment systems other than Apples. These changes come with a new fee and commission structure that developers say are meant to force developers into continuing to use Apples App Store and payments. It also adds transcriptions to podcasts in the Podcasts app, improved iMessage encryption , new emojis , and more. iOS 17.5 arrived on May 13. It included tracker detection, News app updates, and lots of security fixes. New for News+ subscribers is an Offline mode, Quartiles a new daily word game, and Scoreboard that displays your mini-game, crossword and Quartiles data. There is also Cross-Platform Tracking Detection, which will alert users is a (compatible) Bluetooth tracker is with them, similar to how an alert is shown if an AirTag is detected near you, allowing you to block it. The updates will probably slow down now that Apple is working iOS 18 which will be unveiled at WWDC in June and available to the public in September. But minor point releases for bug fixes and security updates will continue, and it is still possible we will see a major release that adds new features. iOS 16 and iOS 15 are still receiving security updates, as will iOS 17 once iOS 18 launches. iOS 17 beta: Whats the latest iOS beta? Apple has run a beta program since it revealed the details of iOS 17 at WWDC. Despite the full version of iOS 17 being available to the public, the beta testing continues. On May 13 Apple released iOS 17.5. Its not clear yet if Apple will start development work on iOS 17.6 or if work on iOS 18, which will be unveiled at WWDC in June, will now take over. We expect bug fixes and security updates for iOS 17 to continue though. If youd like to join the beta for the next version of iOS read this: How to join Apples beta program and try out new software . If youd like to receive iOS beta updates read How to get the iOS beta on your iPhone . We also describe how to revert from iOS beta to a non-beta version of iOS for those testers who wish to use the non-beta version of iOS. iOS 17.5 New features Along with updates to the News app for News+ subscribers (including a new word game), there are 15 security updates in iOS 17.5. The security updates cover frameworks like AppleAVD (the audio and video decoder), FindMy, Maps, Notes, screenshots, WebKit, and more. iOS 17.4 New features Here are the new features in iOS 17.4 (some are EU only): Open door : In the EU there will be 600 new APIs to enable developers to offer their iOS apps for download from alternative app marketplaces. There will also be expanded app analytics, functionality for alternative browser engines, access to NFC for mobile payment systems, and options for processing app payments and distributing iOS apps outside the App Store. Security : Because Apple believes that allowing apps to be installed from outside the App Store is risky to the user, new app safety features will be introduced that are designed to mitigate the risks. These include notarization for iOS and app installation sheets. Marketplace developers will also require authorization. There will also be increased malware protections. New emoji : This one is for everyone, not just those in the EU. A number of new emojis are coming in iOS 17.4. Stopwatch live activity : You can select a Live Activity with the stopwatch running. Significant security update for iMessage : Apple will use post-quantum cryptography to attain the highest-ever encryption . CarPlay and Apple Maps update: If your car supports dual-screen CarPlay a new instrument cluster experience with information about upcoming maneuvers will be included with the iOS 17.4 update. iOS 17.3: New features Here are the new features in iOS 17.3: Collaborative Playlists for Apple Music : This feature was expected for iOS 17.2, but took until iOS 17.3 to appear. Collaborative Playlists for Apple Music, allow you to create, edit and share playlists with others. AirPlay in supporting hotels is enabled. Stolen Device Protection : This optional security feature can limit what can be done on your iPhone if your six-digit passcode is entered when not at a familiar location like your home or work. This is designed to make it harder for thieves to access important information. The settings for this are found in Settings > Face ID & Passcode iOS 17.2: New features These are the features that arrived in iOS 17.2: Journal app : The new app is coming in iOS 16.2. The app is a bit like a diary in which you can record things that happen to you. It can be locked using Face ID/Touch ID. Change default alert sound : Youll be able to go to Settings > Sound & Haptics > Default Alerts to change the default sound for alerts and notifications. News app : The News app will support Live Activities. Apple Music : You will be able to disable the listening history in Apple Music so it doesnt impact Apple Music suggestions. You can listen to a new Favorites playlist based on tracks you have marked as Favorite, and its easier to get to the songs youve marked as Favourite in Apple Music. TV app : There will no longer be separate Movies and TV Shows tabs. Just a Store tab. Improved Telephoto camera focusing speed for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Wireless charging : The iPhones 13 and 14 will gain support for Qi2 wireless charging. With Qi2 support, youll get 15W charging even when you arent using MagSafe chargers . There are also a number of bug fixes including AirDrop improvements and a fix for an issue that may prevent wireless charging in certain vehicles. iOS 17.1: New features The following new features arrived in iOS 17.1 on October 25. New StandBy settings give users a choice of when the display should turn off (automatically, after 20 seconds or never). The Watch app gains options to control double-tap for Apple Watch. Apple Music gains a new Favorites feature as well as collaborative Apple Music playlists. New Generic artwork available for Apple Music playlists. The Continue AirDrop over the internet feature will mean that you dont have to keep your iPhones together while transferring data. iOS 17.1 also addresses the iPhone 12 radiation issue highlighted by the French government agency, Agence Nationale des Frquences (ANFR). Apple claims that Frances testing method does not allow for the off-body detection and increased connectivity power that Apple has employed on all iPhones for more than a decade, so the update will accommodate this specific test protocol. After this update, iPhone 12 users in France may notice reduced wireless performance when the signal is poor. Apple maintains that iPhone 12 models are safe to use. In addition, the update fixes a number of security flaws in Find My, Siri and the Weather app. More here: Apples iOS 17 update patches scary Find My, Siri, Weather flaws . That security fix has also been released for iOS 16 and iOS 15. iOS 17: Bugs and problems Overheating : Apple has addressed a problem that was causing the iPhone 15 Pro to overheat. The iOS 17.0.3 update is designed to fix this problem. Security : Apple issued an update to iOS 17 on September 21 to address some security flaws. Another security fix came on October 4. Wi-Fi : Another issue people sometimes encounter after updating the iOS is that their iPhone struggles to stay connected to Wi-Fi networks. Again, its worth restarting the iPhone if this happens. Alternatively, look at: How to stop an iPhone dropping Wi-Fi connection . Standby wont show correct time zone : We encountered this issue (the clock was stuck in Cupertino). The fix was as follows: Long press the clock that appears in Standby mode Tap the + in the top left Add the clock widget with the correct time to the list iOS 17: How to install iOS 17 on your iPhone Installing iOS 17 couldnt be simpler. Just follow these steps: Open the Settings app Tap General Tap Software Update On this screen youll see the version of iOS you have installed, and if a new version is available it will say so. It may say Install Now if the update was already downloaded in the background but not yet applied, or Download and Install if you havent even downloaded it yet. Just follow the instructions there to upgrade to iOS 17. You may need to re-agree to terms and conditions, and it will take several minutes to download, verify, and apply. Then your iPhone will restart, and youll be presented with some welcome screens that introduce new features. We have more information about installing iOS 17 and addressing any issues with it here: How to update to iOS 17 on your iPhone. If you install an update and want to revert to the previous version there is a very small window in which you can do that, but it can be done, read: How to downgrade iOS . iOS 17 Compatibility: Which phones can run the latest software? iOS 17 will not support the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or the iPhone X. They are all able to run iOS 16 though, so they should get support through security updates for at least another year. The following iPhones get support for iOS 17 , although some wont support all of the new features: iPhone15, iPhone15Plus, iPhone15Pro, iPhone15ProMax iPhone14, iPhone14Plus, iPhone14Pro, iPhone14ProMax iPhone13, iPhone13mini, iPhone13Pro, iPhone13ProMax iPhone12, iPhone12mini, iPhone12Pro, iPhone12ProMax iPhone11, iPhone11Pro, iPhone11ProMax iPhoneXS, iPhoneXSMax iPhoneXR iPhoneSE(2ndgen orlater) Even if your chosen device is granted another year of software support, its worth noting that older iPhones may not get the full range of new features. Its all necessary to comply with the EUs new Digital Markets Act, and the expectation is that it will only apply to those iPhones running iOS 17 in the regions covered by EU law. Indian Companies Face Widespread Ransomware Attacks in 2023: Sophos Report

Indian Companies Face Widespread Ransomware Attacks in 2023: Sophos Report Nearly 64 per cent of Indian organisations surveyed were hit by ransomware attacks in 2023, a latest report by Sophos said on Tuesday, noting that while the attack rates fell year-on-year, the impact on victims actually intensified. The average ransom demand was USD 4.8 million, with 62 per cent of demands exceeding USD 1 million. The median ransom paid was USD 2 million, the report by the global cybersecurity solutions provider said. Put simply, ransomware refers to malicious software or malware that seizes files on a computer, network share, backups, and server, and encrypts them, following which the attacker exhorts the user to cough up money to unlock the files. Typically, ransomware attacks come with a timeline, threatening users that if ransomware demands are not fulfilled, the users will lose files. According to the 'State of Ransomware in India 2024' report by Sophos, there has been a decrease in the rate of ransomware attacks against Indian organisations from the 73 per cent reported in last study (2022) to 64 per cent in 2023. Notably though, ''the impact on victims has intensified, with higher ransom demands and recovery costs compared to the previous year''. The findings are derived from an independent survey of 5,000 IT decision makers across 14 countries, including 500 respondents in India. Conducted in January and February 2024, respondents were asked to answer based on their experiences in the previous 12 months. For the first time, Indian organisations were found to be more likely to recover data by paying the ransom (65 per cent) than using backups (52 per cent). The report revealed that 44 per cent of impacted computers on an average were encrypted in attacks against Indian victims. ''Thirty four per cent of attacks included data theft in addition to encryption, slightly down from 38 per cent the previous year. Excluding ransom payments, the average cost to recover from an attack was USD 1.35 million,'' Sophos said in a release. As per the report, 61 per cent of victims were able to recover data within a week, up from 59 per cent in 2022. As many as 96 per cent reported the attack to authorities, with 70 per cent receiving investigation assistance. ''Prevention remains the most cost-effective ransomware strategy,'' Sunil Sharma, Vice President, Sales, India and SAARC, Sophos said.

Artistry of portrayals

CHENNAI: Versatility may well be the middle name of Devi Jerina, who for over three decades, had taken a sabbatical from the Tamil stage. The cheerful news for her die-hard fans is of her return to working on the project Kaikeyi. Over 8,000 stage shows, rubbing shoulders with stalwarts SV Ramadas, RS Manohar, SA Ashokan, Jaishankar, Vijayapuri Anandan, and their ilk, this dubbing artiste in movies had left an indelible mark in television and movies. According to noted playwright KP Arivanandam, the plays penned by whom she has been a part of including Ambayin Sabatham, Rani Mangamma, Velu Nachiar, Karaikal Ammaiyar, and Mangaiyarkarasi Devis strength was in the voice modulation and in her ability to slip into any character. An hour-long chat with the actress brought to light the most meaningful phase of her stage career which hit a new high in the last decade. A trove of characters Her personal best was Karaikal Ammaiyar, which found a repeat audience not just in Chennai but wherever it was staged all over Tamil Nadu. On the special bond she had with the audience, Devi said it was in the way the character of Punithavadi was portrayed. She says, Such was the feeling of Punithavadi to Shiva that the lord saw a divine form in her. The lord invites her to Thiruvalagandu to keep up his promise of performing the Siva Thandavam. The song was the showpiece of the play where a range of pambai and udukai was brought to the fore. The audience was captivated and the breathtaking finale found a prominent place in the media reviews. Those days, it really mattered as print media was the only source of communication between the artistes and the lovers of theatre. In Mangaiyarkarasi, she had the onerous task of converting her husband from Samana Madam to Saivam. Devi says, When holy water was sprinkled on the individual, the song Mandiramavadu Neru, Vavaiyar Povadhu Neeru did wonders in the way it was received by a spellbound audience. Songs had an integral part in the plays then and the ones staged by Devi Arts Creations (founded by me) had a sprinkle of those. There had been instances when a mere single line of a song could convey the meanings of a full-page dialogue. That is the beauty and essence of stage plays in the good old days where I had used the lyrics of eminent poets to ring in the right messages. If there had been an audience clamour for a play, Devi says it had to be for Ambayin Sapadham where she took the role of one of the three women abducted by Bheeshmar. She notes, I take a vow as Ambai to wed Bheemshar, who had been a staunch Brahmachari. The abduction was to cater to the need of a prince to have his pick from the intended svayamvaram, a norm in the prince dynasty. In the first half, I don the Ambai character and in the second half, the Siganthi character, who is neither a man nor a woman. I relished the challenge of bringing in the right body language in an unusual portrayal. She adds, The IQ level of the audience was on a par in the way Siganthi struck a chord with them. When Lord Krishna is behind the act, one could gauge the intelligence. Those were the ever-lasting moments of an artiste. Rendering it with the desired perfection made my day. Admittedly, there is added pressure for an artiste when the audience expectation shoots up, post the success of a play. For me, there is no pressure but only the pleasure to perform, straight from the bottom of my heart. Stage elements Beyond devotional plays, Devi also delved into historical ones. History has it that Jhansi Rani (Lakshmibai) was the first one to play a leading role in the Indian War of Independence against British rule in 1857. But Devi claims that she has facts to show that a similar act had been successfully done by Velu Nachiar, 80 years earlier than the North Indian queen. A part of the play that featured the story had a scene where Velu Nachiar seeks the help of Karnataka Emperor Hyder Ali, who sends in a battalion of his forces to counter the challenge of the British in the famous Sivaganga battle. The winning moment, Devi says, was in the execution of the act. Everything has to be shown visually in the theatre. In an era where the production house did not have the luxury of the technology and graphics had still not made its presence, the background of the stage was used to enact the battle of all battles. She says, The audience was in the know of the impact of Kattabomman saga and could connect with the happening in Sivaganga. Media had played a stellar part in sending across the message of the honest efforts. The extravaganza in the sets did put a hole in my pocket but the impact would have been lost in the simple backdrop. Among the crowd favourites, high on the list is Rani Mangamma in the way the queen marshalled her resources to hit back at a Muslim invader Zulfi Khan. To outsmart the king, in a game between two great brainers, Mangamma disguises herself as a commoner, desiring to meet the King. Devi says, The razor-sharp dialogues and the war of words between the king and the commoner had the audience in a trance worth going miles to savour, was the media sum up. Moving over to television after a massive success on stage, Agamum Puramum, a 75-week episode produced by Devi Fine Arts and featured in Makkal Television turned out to be miss-it-not for the couch potatoes. She shares, There was a burning desire to show something out of the ordinary for the set of the TV audience, feasted with imaginary offerings week after week. There were scores of talents in the world of Tamil literature not having got their due. The literature songs were converted into the drama form. A total of 162 artists gave shape to the 80 episodes. The essence would have been lost without the perfect rendition of Tamil and a good number of days were consumed to get the perfection. I must acknowledge the writing skills and dialogues of Arivanandam for the overall success. As a director, there is only that much one can do but when she has the material to play around, it does wonders. An optimistic note Thrust into the stage at the age of three, donning Lord Murugas character, while accompanying her grandmother TM Muthulakshmi, a famed drama and movie artiste, Devi says she looks forward to the day when she gets back to the stage. There are a few unfulfilled desires deep inside her, that she would not like to spell out. At 67, she feels there is still a lot of life in her and gets back to the world that she ruled like no one. With what she has earned in theatre, television, and movies, Devi is happy to invest back in her love of theatre. It is the perfection which matters to me and to know that there is a set of audience to view my plays is a feeling akin to that of an owners pride. My feet could not rest till the scripts that had been playing in my mind were reflected on the stage. As an actress, I had my fill but as a producer, there are a few scripts which need to be told with all honesty in that distinct style of my own. Well, it is the style that mattered a legion of her fans would vouch for that.

Setapp's EU Alternative iPhone App Marketplace Launching on May 14

MacPaw today said that its Setapp alternative app marketplace for the iPhone will be launching on Tuesday, May 14 in the European Union. A Setapp marketplace has been in the works since February, which is when Apple first announced the alternative app downloading options that would be coming in iOS 17.4. For those unfamiliar with Setapp, it is a subscription-based service that lets users access dozens of apps for $9.99 per month. Popular apps like Ulysses, iStat Menus, Spark, Unite, Yoink, and more are available through the current subscription service. According to MacPaw, Setapp will provide a carefully selected assortment of apps across categories like productivity, design, lifestyle, utility, and more. Setapp already offers a $12.49 subscription that provides access to both the iOS and Mac versions of apps, but EU users will be able to access Setapp apps without having to download them through the App Store . Setapp will give developers a trusted alternative to App Store distribution with none of the standard fees, though it is worth noting that all apps that exceed 1 million first installs per year must pay the 0.50 euro Core Technology Fee to Apple. Apps distributed through alternative app marketplaces are required to submit to a notarization process to ensure they are free from malware, but Apple does not have restrictions on content so apps that might not have been eligible for the App Store can be distributed through alternative means. Macworld Mac security software adds another layer of protection to what Apple already provides, with features that can help to protect your identity, passwords, and financial details. Haryana's Dalit and Non-Jat Powers Vie for Influence Amid Absence of Jat Stalwarts

Haryana's Dalit and Non-Jat Powers Vie for Influence Amid Absence of Jat Stalwarts Ever since Haryana was carved out as a separate state way back in 1966, its politics has revolved around four prominent political families -- Devi Lal, Bhajan Lal, Bansi Lal and the Hoodas. Earlier, Haryana's three famous 'Lals' -- Devi Lal, Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal -- ruled the state by turn for decades. Before the BJP came to power on its own strength in 2014, it was the Hooda family which called the shots. The kin of the two famous Lals -- former chief ministers Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal -- who over the years had been entering the fray during the parliamentary polls, have this time been sidelined and have not got the ticket from their respective parties. However, four members of the family of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, popularly known as 'Tau' Devi Lal, have entered the contest from the Hisar and Kurukshetra seats. Interestingly, three members of the Devi Lal family -- Lal's son Ranjit Singh Chautala, an Independent MLA who switched over to the BJP recently; JJP MLA Naina Chautala (57), who is wife of JJP chief and Devi Lal's grandson Ajay Singh Chautala; and Sunaina Chautala (47), wife of INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautalas cousin Ravi Chautala -- are contesting against each other from the Hisar parliamentary seat. Ravi is the son of Devi Lal's son late Partap Singh Chautala. INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala is contesting from the Kurukshetra seat. However, Shruti Choudhary, grand daughter of former chief minister Bansi Lal, has been denied the Congress ticket from the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh seat. The ruling BJP too did not consider fielding Kuldeep Bishnoi or his son Bhavya Bishnoi from the Hisar seat. Kuldeep is former chief minister Bhajan Lal's younger son. The Congress has fielded sitting MLA Rao Dan Singh from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh while the BJP went with Ranjit Singh Chautala from Hisar. Shruti Choudhry was elected MP from Bhiwani-Mahendergarh in 2009, but BJP's Dharambir Singh defeated her in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Earlier, her late father Surender Singh and grandfather Bansi Lal held the Bhiwani seat on multiple occasions. In 2009, Bhajan Lal was elected from Hisar as a candidate of his own outfit Haryana Janhit Congress (BL). After his demise, his son Kuldeep Bishnoi won the seat in the 2011 bypolls. In 2019, Kuldeep's son Bhavya Bishnoi unsuccessfully contested the Hisar seat when he was in the Congress. He was defeated by former Union minister Birender Singhs son, a bureaucrat-turned-politician Brijendra, a BJP candidate. Now, Kuldeep and Bhavya are in the BJP while Birender Singh and Brijendra Singh left the BJP recently to join the Congress. From Rohtak, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hoodas son Deepender Singh Hooda, at present a Rajya Sabha MP, has entered the contest from the family stronghold. Deepender is a three-time former MP from Rohtak and in 2019 he lost to BJP's Arvind Sharma, against whom he is pitted again this time. A few days ago, when Kuldeep Bishnoi was asked by reporters that his supporters were upset after the BJP did not consider him as a candidate from Hisar, he had quipped, ''The workers have feelings... when any leader does not get a ticket, it is the human nature that they are disappointed. But that does not turn into opposition. ''Through you (media), I appeal to all the workers that now is the time to work hard and strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Modi. We have to again form the BJP government at the Centre,'' Bishnoi had said. Reacting to the Congress denying her ticket from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh, Shruti Choudhary said, ''I got a chance in 2009 and I worked with honesty and dedication for the area. As an opposition member, I continued to raise the issues of my people... earlier this constituency (Bhiwani) was nurtured by my grandfather and my father.'' On not getting the ticket this time, she said the party's decision has to be accepted. ''I want to tell my workers not to be disappointed,'' she said. Congress leaders Shruti Choudhary and Kiran Choudhary also said they accept the party's decision. Polling for all the 10 seats in Haryana will be held in the sixth of the seven-phase elections on May 25.

Will Bonai assembly segment throw up a surprise for BJP in Odisha?

ROURKELA: Of the seven Assembly segments under Sundargarh Lok Sabha (LS) constituency, the mineral-rich Bonai (ST) is perhaps the weakest link of the BJP where it needs some element of surprise to win the seat. While a triangular contest is on the cards in Bonai, the BJP is likely to be placed at the third position in the home-turf of BJP stalwart and partys Sundargarh LS candidate Jual Oram. The formidable BJD, on the other hand, is trying hard to dislodge the sitting MLA of CPM Laxman Munda (65). Sources said despite being the highest mining revenue contributor in Sundargarh, Bonai continues to be among the poorest and most backward Assembly constituencies in the district. Ideally after Laxmans two consecutive terms in 2014 and 2019 and little development in the region, there should be strong anti-incumbency against the sitting MLA. But Laxmans base seems intact. The CPMs strategy of maintaining a firm control on the workforce at the railway sidings and mines in Koida Mining Circle (KMC) along with its committed tribal vote bank looks to be working well for the Left party. Poll observers said in the run-up to the election on May 20, the CPM appears to be in a advantageous position. Moreover, the party has the backing of its alliance partners Congress and JMM. BJD nominee and former Bonai MLA Bhimsen Choudhary (62) looks confident of ending the winning spree of Laxman and hand over the ruling party its first-ever victory from the seat. However, the BJD faces the threat of sabotage from within. Back in the old days, the BJP was a dominant force in Bonai till factionalism crept in from 2000 onwards to push the saffron party to the brink. Jual initiated his political journey by winning Bonai in 1990 when the party was a lesser-known entity in Odisha. Then, BJPs Junagarh MLA Bikram Keshari Deo and Jual were the only two BJP legislators in Odisha Legislative Assembly. Jual retained the seat in 1995 but resigned later to contest the Lok Sabha election from Sundargarh. This time, BJP has fielded Sebati Naik (50), a former chairperson of Lahunipada panchayat samiti, as its candidate from Bonai. The partys local unit believes the 2024 election would throw up a surprise. There has been a strong Hindutva undercurrent in Bonai and the highest number of BJP followers were mobilised from the Assembly seat for the Ayodhya Ram temple consecration ceremony, said a party leader. There are 10 candidates in the fray in Bonai this time. Five Independent candidates and two nominees of lesser-known parties may split votes which will eventually benefit the BJP, he claimed. Jual said the BJP is poised for a win as there is a strong undercurrent in favour of the saffron party over issues of Ayodhya Ram temple, scrapping of Article 370 and overall achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sources said the BJP is likely to organise a rally of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in Bonai where he had served as sub-collector in mid-1990s.

DC Edit | Kejriwal on warpath, gives Opp boost, BJP gets a jolt

The unexpected return of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to the public sphere and his first speech loaded with speculation of early retirement of Mr Narendra Modi should he return as PM has given the ongoing Lok Sabha election its first major plot twist, though the jury is out as to what would be its outcome. Starting its campaign with the slogans of 400 plus this time and Modis guarantees, the BJP has been presumably disappointed by the declining voter turnout in the first two phases of the polls. Prime Minister Modi, followed by other leaders including BJP president J.P. Nadda, meanwhile, lost no time in getting on the communal bandwagon after purportedly discovering hints of wealth redistribution in the Congress manifesto. That the document has no such actual promise did not deter the saffron partys leadership from scaring the people with the threat of an Opposition snatching the assets of the majority community, including womens mangalsutras, if it were to be voted to power. Every day saw the level of political discourse sinking to lower and more nonsensical levels, yet the Congress and its INDIA alliance partners found it hard to defend their positions. If Mr Kejriwals very release from jail albeit thanks to the verdict of the Supreme Court has further unsettled the ruling party, his first public speech that mentions Mr Modi turning 75 in September next year must have set the cat among pigeons. The BJP leaders who would, in the normal course, have imperiously ignored Opposition jibes, were sent scrambling for an answer. Union home minister Amit Shah went out of his way to personally deny any talk of his chances of replacing Mr Modi. There is nothing in the partys constitution which barred people above the age of 75 years from holding an office, he declared. The BJP president concurred with his statement. It is a fact that the BJP constitution has no age bar on people holding post after 75 but the retirement of stalwarts L.K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Yashwant Sinha and their transfer into a Margadarshak Mandal, or seniors circle, is rumoured to be the result of a decision by the leadership to limit positions of power to the relatively young. Mr Shahs reported statement during the 2019 election campaign that the party had not given tickets to anyone above 75 only adds grist to the speculation. However, as the Indian Constitution has prescribed only a lower age limit for candidates contesting for legislative bodies, it stops no one, including Mr Modi, from holding office even after the age of 75. Mr Kejriwal throwing a stone to the otherwise calm waters of BJP politics is a welcome diversion. It gives the Opposition alliance another chance to regroup and adds some fun to electioneering. Perhaps the next phases will see a higher voter turnout.

In the Milieu of Crorepati Candidates, a Daily-wage-earner in Odisha Throws his Hat into Electoral Ring

Bhubaneswar : The Aska assembly constituency in Odishas Ganjam district is back in the news after a 55-year-old daily wage-earner entered the electoral fray. Ramachandra Badatya, a mason hailing from Haradapadar village, has filed his nomination papers to contest the polls from Aska assembly polls. He goes out to work in the morning and undertakes his campaigns for two hours in the forenoon and again in the evening. Ramachandra strikes a balance between his work schedule and the campaigning hours. He is seen visiting houses seeking votes. Ramachandra is a member of the Red Stat Committee of CPI (ML). My working hours are from 8 am to 11 am. During the three-hour break, I undertake campaigning activity for two hours. After an hour's rest, I resume work from 3 pm to 6 pm and then start my second round of campaigning in the evening, he said. The masson, who gets around Rs 500 a day, does not hire anyone for sticking posters on walls or hanging banners at important places. He does all these activities himself with the help of some of his close friends. He does not mind losing his deposit of Rs 10,000. Im in the fray with a message: Choose right candidate who can do good to you. I tell people not to elect a person who is corrupt and inefficient. I know the chances of my victory are not as bright. But, it gives me satisfaction when some people stand and listen to my speech, he says. Ramachandra raises the issues of migration of local youths to other cities in search of work and lack of industrialsation in Ganjam district. He also raises the state governments utter negligence to the agriculture sector. Ramachandra has thrown his hat into the ring regardless of the stalwarts of the BJD, BJP and Congress in the fray. The BJP has fielded Saroj Kumar Padhi while Congress has given a ticket to Surabhi Bisoi. The BJD has fielded Manjula Swain.

Precautionary Measures: Safeguarding Your Digital Well-being In light of these looming threats, users are strongly urged to exercise caution and implement proactive measures to safeguard their digital well-being. Simple yet effective steps, such as staying vigilant against suspicious emails or links, regularly updating software and security patches, and utilizing reputable antivirus software, can significantly mitigate the risks posed by malicious actors. Government Initiatives: Promoting Cybersecurity Awareness The government's issuance of this alert underscores its commitment to promoting cybersecurity awareness and empowering users to navigate the digital landscape safely. By fostering a culture of vigilance and equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to protect themselves against cyber threats, authorities strive to create a safer and more secure online environment for all. Why is my Mac fan so loud? How to fix an overheating Mac

Macworld If your Mac is beginning to sound like it has a jet engine spinning up inside its not just annoying, it may also be a sign that something is wrong. There could be an issue that is causing your Mac to overheat, or you might have a faulty fan. Heres what to do if those fans keep whirring even if nothing appears to be wrong. Why is my Macs fan so loud all of a sudden? Having the fans going at full pelt isnt a sign that things are necessarily wrong with your Mac, as the reason theyre installed in the first place is to cool down the insides of your computer by increasing the airflow around the components. If youre running computationally intensive applications such as HD video editors or high-end games, then your Mac will be working very hard, which in turn creates heat. The fan sensor will notice that the temperature is rising and immediately spin up the fans to help keep the system from cooking itself into oblivion. So, if you find the noise levels suddenly increase when youre compressing a 4K movie about your recent holiday or playing a particularly frantic game of League of Legends, then its actually a good thing. Of course, if youre not doing any of these things, then there are a few other factors to consider before calling Apple support. How to stop a Mac from overheating 1. Check the CPU usage The fans in Macs will usually kick in as a precautionary measure when the CPU is under a heavy load, such as with the tasks mentioned above. But, if youre not sure whats triggering the fans, its best to open the Activity Monitor and see the apps that are hogging all of your CPU resources. To do this, hold the CMD key and press the Space Bar to open Spotlight. Now search for Activity Monitor and select it from the list that appears. Make sure that the CPU tab is selected, then look to see which apps are at the top of the %CPU column. If its not essential, you can try closing it to see if that stops the fans. Click on the process and then click on the X above to stop it. 2. Check your room temperature Its important to consider environmental factors when diagnosing a problem with fans. If its a hot day and there is no airconditioning in your home, or if youve got the heating whacked up in your room, then the ambient temperature could have a detrimental effect on the performance of your Mac. Ideally the room temperature should be between 50 95 Fahrenheit (10 to 35 degrees Celsius). Move to another room or stop using your Mac if the area you are in is hotter than that. This could be even more challenging when using intensive software, as its much harder for the fans to cool down the computer if the room temperature itself is high. If you can open a window, turn down the thermostat, or use a room fan to move air around, then your iMac, Mac mini or other Mac should be able to cope a little better. To alleviate the issue, you can try using a ventilated tray like the TeckNet Cooling Pad (21.99/$23.99) under a MacBook. To monitor your room temperature you could try the SwitchBot Thermometer ($24.99). 3. Make sure the air can circulate Its likely that your MacBook is placed directly on a surface, this will mean that the air cannot circulate around it. We suggest using a dedicated MacBook stand, which will at least allow air to circulate underneath it. Using a stand will raise the Mac off the flat surface of a desk or lap and increase airflow around the chassis. One of our favourites is the Twelve South Curve ( $59.99 / 49.99 ). 4. Check your vents are clear of blockages Foundry Another reason your fans could be going like billy-o is if the vents themselves are blocked, as this will make it difficult for hot air to leave the interior of the device. On a MacBook Pro, youll find vents along the back edge (where the display hinges are found) and the side edges just beyond the USB-C ports, while MacBook Air vents are all situated along the top edge of the chassis near the hinges. Mac mini owners should check the underside of the device, as this is where cooler air is drawn into the chassis, plus youll need to ensure that the vents at the back are clear so that the heated air can be safely dispelled. On iMacs and iMac Pros , the vents are situated on the back and bottom edge, while the Mac Pro has vents on the front and back. Make sure that these areas arent blocked by items on your desk or a cushion if youre working on the sofa. You could try using a hoover to remove any build-up of fluff or dust, but be sure to keep the nozzle a little distance away from the device casing to avoid any damage. 5. Make sure you are using an official adapter IDG You should also be using an Apple adaptor, and Apple recommends that you plug your adaptor into the MacBook before plugging it into the mains. 6. Reset the SMC IDG If you have done all of this and are still having trouble with your overheating Mac, then consider resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) .This is generally seen as a bit of a last resort for fixing most Mac problems before heading to the Apple Store. Heres how to reset the SMC . 7. Keep macOS updated Foundry When Apple releases software updates to macOS, it often includes bug fixes and tweaks to better performance. There could be an OS issue that affects the fans and if so, the fix will be included in an update. When updating macOS, the computer will need an internet connection. It will also need to restart, so save any open files before doing an update. Its also a good idea to back up your Mac. To check for a macOS update, go to System Settings > General > Software Update . If one is available, it will appear here and you can do the installation. 8. Check for malware IDG Malware is a term that refers to malicious software, which includes viruses, trojans, and other software that intrudes your Mac for nefarious reasons. Malware can cause your Mac to run intensive processes, which in turn increases the operating temperature and makes the fans go on. Macworld has several guides to help with malware, including a guide on whether or not you need antivirus software , a list of Mac viruses, malware, and trojans , and a comparison of Mac security software . How to test a Macs cooling fans If you want to see if your Macs fans are running properly, you can try running tests through Diagnostic mode on your Mac. The tests will check your hardware and if issues are found, will point them out and refer you to an Apple Store for service. Foundry Foundry Foundry This requires booting into Diagnostic mode, which can be done by booting into Mac Recovery mode first. You need an internet connection, Heres how to do it. How to boot into Diagnostic mode: Intel Macs: Turn on your Mac and hold down the D key. Then go to step 3. M-series Macs: Turn on your Mac by pressing and holding down the power button. The Mac will show startup options. Dont click any of the icons. Instead, hold down Command-D on the keyboard. The Mac will say Continue holding to start diagnostics. Hold down these keys. The Mac will reboot and you can let go of the keys. The Diagnostics Loader will appear and youll see an Initializing Diagnostics screen with a list of languages. Select a language and click OK . The Diagnostic & Repair screen appears. Click Run Offline to start testing. The diagnostic tests will run and take a few minutes. If an issue is found, it will be noted at the end of the test. A Get started link leads you to an Apple website with a guide to the reference codes used in the diagnostic. The website will offer suggestions on how to address any issues. How to clean a Macs fans Over time, its possible that your Macs fans can get clogged up with dust and other bits and pieces, which can add to the noise they make when spinning. If youre handy with a screwdriver (youll need a pentalobe one) and have a can of compressed air to hand, you can take to bottom off of a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or Mac mini and give it a few quick blasts of air to dislodge any detritus that has taken up residence inside the case and fans. You can find detailed instructions on iFixit on how to clean a MacBooks fans . Be very careful not to catch any wires or touch any of the circuitry, as you dont want a static charge to blow any of the processors or other important components. Just beware that opening up your Mac could void your warranty. How to stop a Macs fans If your fans have gone haywire, then we recommend downloading the free Macs Fan Control (free) software, which allows you to manually control and monitor the cooling system. With this software you can change the RPM value and fan speed in relation to the temperature sensor so that the fans dont kick in until your Mac is REALLY hot but be aware that this could damage your Mac. How to check my Macs temperature If you think your Mac is overheating then you may want to check the temperature. One way to do this is to install an app called Temperature Gauge Pro (aka TGPro) from TunabellySoftware , $20/19.20 (currently discounted to $10/9.50). Temperature Gauge Pro enables you to monitor the temperature inside your MacBook. While the numbers sounds particularly high, a temperature of the Macs CPU even at 90 degrees Celsius is nothing to worry about. What you need to worry about is if the physical temperature of your MacBook is uncomfortably warm, and if the fans appear to spin up for no apparent reason. There could be a huge range of issues at fault here. We also discuss How to check your Macs internal temperature and keep it cool in a separate article. Does my Mac have an overheating problem? If youve followed all of the steps above and still cant quell the sound of spinning, there might be a hardware problem with the Mac. Your Mac also comes with built-in monitoring software that can check your hardware for any faults. For instructions on how to use this, to take a look at the official guide to the Apple Diagnostics tools. Should you discover that there is an issue, youll want to contact Apple support and book an appointment at the Genius bar. While there you might be tempted with trading in your old model for a new one, so be sure to read our Mac buying guide so you get the one that best suits your needs. We have a separate article where we discuss everything you need to know about getting Apple products repaired . Mac

Sudharsan's Composure under Pressure Merits Recognition, Say Smith and Moody

Sudharsan's Composure under Pressure Merits Recognition, Say Smith and Moody B Sai Sudharsan broke away from the mould of anchor with a brilliantly crafted hundred against Chennai Super Kings, and the ''calm under pressure'' demeanour of the Gujarat Titans' opener has left stalwarts Graeme Smith and Tom Moody impressed. Till the match on Friday, Sudharsan struck runs at a moderate strike rate of 131.67 while coming at No. 3, but the promotion to the opener's slot seemed to have liberated him. Against CSK, the Tamil Nadu left-hander made 103 off 51 balls (5x4s, 7x6s) and his strike-rate read 201.96. Smith said Sudharsan should be given more opportunities. ''Sudharsan is so under the radar, he is the leading run-scorer for GT this season, the fastest Indian to a thousand IPL runs with a difference of six innings. He needs to start being spoken about a bit more,'' said Smith on JIO Cinema. Former Australian all-rounder and a revered coach Tom Moody praised Sudharsan for maintaining his composure in the match against a tough opponent. ''The way this young player goes about his business is a joy to watch. He seems so calm under pressure. He seems to have the right answers at the right time. ''He knows when to go big to look for that boundary to take pressure out of an over and he seems to be able to keep pace with the game,'' said Moody. Former South Africa skipper Smith lauded the partnership between Sudharsan and Shubman Gill that was worth 210 runs, joint highest for the opening wicket this season. ''The partnership was excellent, left-hand-right-hand combination, they ran between the wickets well; they picked their targets, and their matchups were just outstanding,'' he added. Moody also underscored the importance of the alliance between Gill and Sudharsan. ''The partnership was nothing short of extraordinary. They complemented each other exceptionally well, evident in their visible enjoyment on the field, as Gill expressed during the post-match presentation. ''This camaraderie is crucial for any backing and partnership,'' added Moody.

LS polls 2024: Stage set for high-stakes showdown in Telangana

HYDERABAD: The upcoming elections are literally a high-stakes showdown for all the three major political players in the fray, but more so for the BRS and BJP. While each party is vying for dominance by winning a majority of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, the result will have immense ramification on its future. For the BRS, led by former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, these elections are of utmost importance in reaffirming the partys standing in the state. A strong showing in the Lok Sabha polls would not only bolster its credibility but also silence speculations about its waning influence following the defeat in the 2023 Assembly elections. While the aggressive campaigning by KCR along with party stalwarts T Harish Rao and KT Rama Rao has infused a sense of optimism among cadre and supporters, questions regarding the loyalty of certain MLAs remain. According to sources in the pink party, many of its MLAs are in touch with the Congress and are waiting for the Lok Sabha elections results. If the BRS performs well, they are likely to continue in the party, and if not, trouble may be brewing for KCR. The BRS also has to contend with concerns about poll management and electioneering by second-rung leaders. Meanwhile, the BJP has its eyes firmly set on coming to power in the state and is putting in all efforts to achieve this target. To make inroads in Telangana, the party knows that it not only has to retain the four Lok Sabha seats, but also win about six more seats to properly announce its arrival as a formidable political player in Telangana. The party has been aggressive in its campaign, banking heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modis charisma and Amit Shahs strategising. The results will not only indicate the BJPs trajectory in Telangana, but will also influence its long-term political strategy in the region. The Congress, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, is treating the ongoing elections as a litmus test and a referendum on its governance. The partys top leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have been working hard to rally support from the public and win a majority of the seats on offer. Failure to achieve this target could spell trouble for the Revanth Reddy administration and questions would be raised about his ability to sustain the mandate given to him in 2023. Also, if the INDIA bloc goes on to form the government at the Centre, a good performance by the Congress in the state would mean improved chances for the party leaders to become members of the Union Cabinet. Much hinges on the results Aggressive campaigning by KCR, T Harish Rao and KTR has infused a sense of optimism among cadre Some BRS MLAs are in touch with the Congress and are waiting for the Lok Sabha elections results BJP has its eyes firmly set on coming to power in the state and is putting in all efforts to achieve this target Congress is treating the elections as referendum on its 100-days in power

Cyberattack Diverts Ambulances, Cripples Patient Records at Major US Health System

Cyberattack Diverts Ambulances, Cripples Patient Records at Major US Health System A cyberattack on the Ascension health system operating in 19 states across the U.S. forced some of its 140 hospitals to divert ambulances, caused patients to postpone medical tests and blocked online access to patient records. An Ascension spokesperson said it detected unusual activity Wednesday on its computer network systems. Officials refused to say whether the non-profit Catholic health system, based in St. Louis, was the victim of a ransomware attack or whether it had paid a ransom, and it did not immediately respond to an email seeking updates. But the attack had the hallmarks of a ransomware, and Ascension said it had called in Mandiant, the Google cybersecurity unit that is a leading responder to such attacks. Earlier this year, a cyberattack on Change Healthcare disrupted care systems nationwide, and the CEO of its parent, UnitedHealth Group Inc., acknowledged in testimony to Congress that it had paid a ransom of $22 million in bitcoin. Ascension said that both its electronic records system and the MyChart system that gives patients access to their records and allows them to communicate with their doctors were offline. We have determined this is a cybersecurity incident, the national Ascension spokesperson's statement said. Our investigation and restoration work will take time to complete, and we do not have a timeline for completion. To prevent the automated spread of ransomware, hospital IT officials typically take electronic medical records and appointment-scheduling systems offline. UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty told congressional committees that Change Healthcare immediately disconnected from other systems to prevent the attack from spreading during its incident. The Ascension spokesperson's latest statement, issued Thursday, said ambulances had been diverted from several hospitals without naming them. In Wichita, Kansas, local news reports said the local emergency medical services started diverting all ambulance calls from its hospitals there Wednesday, though the health system's spokesperson there said Friday that the full diversion of ambulances ended Thursday afternoon. The EMS service for Pensacola, Florida, also diverted patients from the Ascension hospital there to other hospitals, its spokesperson told the Pensacola News Journal. And WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee reported that Ascension patients in the area said they were missing CT scans and mammograms and couldn't refill prescriptions. Connie Smith, president of the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, is among the Ascension providers turning to paper records this week to cope. Smith, who coordinates surgeries at Ascension St. Francis Hospital in Milwaukee, said the hospital didn't cancel any surgical procedures and continued treating emergency patients. But she said everything has slowed down because electronic systems are built into the hospital's daily operations. Younger providers are often unfamiliar with paper copies of essential records and it takes more time to document patient care, check the results of prior lab tests and verify information with doctors' offices, she said. Smith said union leaders feel staff and service cutbacks have made the situation even tougher. Hospital staff also have received little information about what led to the attack or when operations might get closer to normal, she said. You're doing everything to the best of your ability but you leave feeling frustrated because you know you could have done things faster or gotten that patient home sooner if you just had some extra hands, Smith said. Ascension said its system expected to use downtime procedures for some time and advised patients to bring notes on their symptoms and a list of prescription numbers or prescription bottles with them to appointments. Cybersecurity experts say ransomware attacks have increased substantially in recent years, especially in the health care sector. Increasingly, ransomware gangs steal data before activating data-scrambling malware that paralyzes networks. The threat of making stolen data public is used to extort payments. That data can also be sold online. We are working around the clock with internal and external advisors to investigate, contain, and restore our systems, the Ascension spokesperson's latest statement said. The attack against Change Healthcare earlier this year delayed insurance reimbursements and heaped stress on doctor's offices around the country. Change Healthcare provides technology used by doctor offices and other care providers to submit and process billions of insurance claims a year. It was unclear Friday whether the same group was responsible for both attacks. Witty said Change Healthcare's core systems were now fully functional. But company officials have said it may take several months of analysis to identify and notify those who were affected by the attack. They also have said they see no signs that doctor charts or full medical histories were released after the attack. Witty told senators that UnitedHealth repels an attempted intrusion every 70 seconds. A ransomware attack in November prompted the Ardent Health Services system, operating 30 hospitals in six states, to divert patients from some of its emergency rooms to other hospitals while postponing certain elective procedures.

(Facebook) Supporters of Congress candidate from Patancheru Neelam Madhu Mudiraj staged a protest at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday after he was not issued the B-form even after announcement of his candidature. Madhu was among the 16 candidates whose name figured in the third list of candidates for Assembly polls released by the party on Monday. (Facebook) Hyderabad : Neelam Madhu Mudiraj, Congress candidate from the Medak Lok Sabha constituency, said it was the Congress, which uplifted grassroot level leaders, including sarpanches and he was fortunate to get a ticket to contest from Medak, which was earlier represented by stalwarts like Indira Gandhi. Popular leader Mogaligundla Baga Reddy, who started his political journey as a sarpanch, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Medak. I too started my political journey as a sarpanch and the Congress has encouraged grassroot level politicians like me by offering the ticket to contest from a prestigious constituency like Medak, he said in an interview with Deccan Chronicle. Excerpts: Q. How do you feel about contesting from Medak, which once elected Indira Gandhi and M. Baga Reddy? The credit must go to the Congress, which has been uplifting grassroot level leaders like me. I served as a sarpanch but the Congress high command and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has given me the Lok Sabha ticket. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for this opportunity. Q. For two decades, the Medak Lok Sabha constituency has been a BRS stronghold. What is your poll strategy to win this seat? Tables will turn, like in other Assembly segments in the constituency. We are the ruling party in the state. The people of Gajwel and Siddipet, especially the ones hailing from backward classes and Dalits, are with the Congress. Q. Granite mafia and Pharma pollution are major issues in Sangareddy and Patancheru. How do you plan to address these issues? Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has already initiated action. Some establishments have been sealed. As soon as I am elected, I will take up these issues and resolve them. Q. Several senior Congress leaders were denied a ticket to contest from Medak. How are their supporters working with you? The Congress cadre is the most obedient. They all are supporting me with all sincerity and commitment at their command.

LS campaigning in BJP stronghold Indore marred by lackluster efforts from all parties, NOTA emerges as potential wildcard

LS campaigning in BJP stronghold Indore marred by lackluster efforts from all parties, NOTA emerges as potential wildcard The Congress' absence from the Lok Sabha poll fray in Madhya Pradesh's commercial capital Indore has made the campaigning lacklustre and subdued, dealing a blow to those selling party flags and banners, but all eyes are now on whether 'NOTA' could create a record on May 13. While the ruling BJP has fielded sitting MP Shankar Lalwani, the Congress' Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew his nomination on the last day of the process, throwing the opposition party out of the race. The Congress has been asking voters to press 'NOTA (none of the above) to teach the BJP a lesson and has been organising torch rallies, meetings and also holding discussions with people on social media. Despite being MP's biggest Lok Sabha constituency with 25.13 lakh voters, the BJP has not organised meetings of any of the top party stalwarts, though state party spokesperson Alok Dubey said its current strategy was enough to garner a ''victory with overwhelming majority''. Ruing the turn of events that has made Indore Lok Sabha poll a one-horse race, Girdharilal Joshi, who has been selling flags and banners in the Rajwada area of the city for years, said, ''I have never seen such a dull Lok Sabha election campaign before. There is no enthusiasm among the local people about the polls.'' ''Candidates and supporters are not buying flags and banners. Moreover, business is also hit as most of the campaigns are being carried out on social media,'' Joshi told PTI. Another flag and banner vendor Prakash Vishwakarma said his stock of Rs 10 lakh was lying unsold, since no one was keen to spend on publicity materials when the result is a foregone conclusion. Indore has been with the BJP since 1989 and with just 14 candidates in the fray, nine of whom are independents, the ruling party is claiming its victory margin will be more than eight lakh votes. Indore Press Club President Arvind Tiwari said, ''The current election atmosphere and especially the reactions of senior citizens and intellectuals suggest NOTA can create a new record here this time.'' In the 2019 LS polls, Indore had recorded a voter turnout of 69 per cent, with the NOTA figure being 5,045. The BJP has been attacking the Congress' support for NOTA with several leaders calling it part of the opposition party's ''negative politics'' and an ''attack on democracy''. Lalwani, meanwhile, is active on social media and is taking part in campaign events across the constituency with an eye on the victory margin. Asked why the BJP has not organised meetings of top leaders of the party, MP BJP spokesperson Alok Dubey said, ''We have programmes of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and state unit chief Vishnu Dutt Sharma here as part of our strategy. These are enough to ensure poll victory with an overwhelming majority.'' Indore will go to polls on May 13 in the fourth phase.

Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 review

Macworld At a glance Expert's Rating Pros Internal battery Protective case More efficient than a wireless power bank Slimmer than rival battery cases Cons Battery offers less power than rivals More expensive than rivals Our Verdict The Mophie Juice Pack battery case provides 50% back-up power and protection for the iPhone 15. The internal 2,400mAh battery is one of the lowest-capacity options but the benefit of this is a much-reduced hump at the back of the slim case, in comparison to bulkier 5000mAh capacity battery cases. Price When Reviewed $99.95 Best Prices Today: Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 Retailer Price Zagg $99.95 View Deal Price comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwide Product Price Price comparison from Backmarket Battery casesphone cases that host a small battery so you can recharge a fading phone on the moveused to be a must-have option for iPhone users but are now quite rare. Apple made a great battery case, the Apple Smart Battery Case , that was initially laughed at for its humped back but was a cherished phone-power savior for many of us. Apple stopped making them when it released the iPhone 12. Back in those days, the most well-known and trusted battery case brand was Mophie, now owned by accessory maker Zagg, with its ultra-popular Juice Pack range. However, the last Mophie Juice Pack release was in 2019, for the iPhone 11 series. Owners of the iPhone 12, 13 and 14 had no Apple or Mophie battery cases to choose from. Battery cases still existed for these phones, but mostly from little-known Chinese makers. We tested a lot of these and our favorite iPhone battery case maker has been long-running Newdery (also Chinese), which we have trusted for power, safety and protection. But there was no real competition from better-known brands. It was therefore with excitement that we heard that Mophie was back in the game with a new Juice Pack battery case, with models for each of the iPhone 15 family except the 15 Plus. Power The main point of a battery case is to provide backup power when your iPhone needs it mostusually when you are on the move, away from a handy wall charger. The Juice Packs for iPhone 15 and 15 Pro each contain a 2,400mAh internal battery, while the more needy iPhone 15 Pro Maxs Juice Pack gets a meatier 3,000mAh battery. We tested the Mophie Juice Pack with an iPhone 15 Pro, and it gave us an average of 56% extra battery life, which should be enough to get you through the day until you can charge the iPhone up again via a cable and wall charger or a dedicated MagSafe iPhone charger. Check out our roundups of the best iPhone chargers and best MagSafe chargers . The competition comes from battery case stalwart Newdery, which makes battery cases for the iPhone 15, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max in two much larger capacities: 5000mAh and 10000mAh. Our test iPhone 15 Pro was charged close to full (95%) using the Newdery 5000mAh battery case and 168% using the bulkier 10000mAh case. Read our Newdery Battery Case for iPhone 15 review . Thats a significant difference in charging power compared to the Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 Pro, and there are compromises on both sides, mainly based around the battery case design. The Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 Pro (right) is a two-part case, compared to the one-part Newdery battery case (left). The Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 Pro (right) is a two-part case, compared to the one-part Newdery battery case (left). Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry The Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 Pro (right) is a two-part case, compared to the one-part Newdery battery case (left). Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Design A battery case should offer robust protection like any phone case, with bumpers on all four sides and a tough back. The phones front should be protected from drops by a raised bezel that means the screen doesnt contact the floor when it lands, inevitably, face down. The Mophie Juice Pack fulfils these criteria, and we feel confident that it protects the phone from everyday knocks, drops and scrapes. Mophie claims that it offers 6 feet of drop protection. Its tough external plastic case is made of sustainable PCR materialswith up to 50% post-consumer recycled plastics. Its a classic Mophie two-part design that is different from one-piece designs where you flex back the top part of the case before sliding in the phone. With the Juice Pack, the top quarter of the case needs to be pulled off before putting the phone inside or taking it out. This makes phone insertion less prone to potential breaks as the phone is more nimbly fed on to the USB-C connector at the base. However, having two parts does introduce more points of failure if you are frequently taking the case part. As users keep their phone inside the vase most of the time, this shouldnt be a problem. The USB-C connector feels solid and is less bendable than the flimsier Lightning connector that older iPhones used. There are physical buttons on the sides and front cut-outs for the iPhones bottom speakers and microphone. When you need the extra power from the cases internal battery you just push the button at the back and charging commences. Four LEDs indicate the current battery level and charge status of the case. Youll still need to check the iPhone itself for its remaining battery power. You can give your iPhone a quick burst or just flood the iPhones battery with everything the case can offer. Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Battery case vs power bank A battery case is more convenient than a separate power bank as it should always be with you, where it is easy to forget to pack a charged power bank. It also offers protection for your phone, which a power bank is not able to do. We always recommend you always protect your phone in a casewe have tested the best iPhone 15 cases and having the back-up power in a battery case is a great bonus function. Being charged via the cases USB-C connector, they charge faster than via a wireless power bank. A power bank, on the other hand, is a more flexible solution. You get a wider choice of battery capacitiesup to 27000mAhand they arent obsolete when you change your phone for a newer model. Power banks are used only when you need them, so dont add permanent bulk to your phone during the day. Read our roundup of the best iPhone power banks . The choice depends on whether you dont mind a little extra bulk on your phone. The Mophie Juice Pack is noticeably slimmer than most rival battery cases, but it is chunkier than your average phone case. The Mophie Juice Pack, bottom, is noticeably slimmer than the Newdery battery case for iPhone 15 on top. The Mophie Juice Pack, bottom, is noticeably slimmer than the Newdery battery case for iPhone 15 on top. Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry The Mophie Juice Pack, bottom, is noticeably slimmer than the Newdery battery case for iPhone 15 on top. Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Price The Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max is priced at $99.95 / 99.95 . While high, thats a reasonable price for the functionality and protection on offer. The Apple Smart Battery Case used to cost $129 / 129. That said, the 5000mAh Newdery Battery Case for iPhone 15/15 Pro and for iPhone 15 Plus/Pro Max cost $29.99 / 26.99 . The 10000mAh Newdery Battery Case costs $49.99 / 52.99 . The Mophie Juice Pack is a better build and didnt once turn off its charge while sitting in my pocket, as the Newdery battery case did on occasion. It is slimmer and lighter (98g) than the Newdery alternative (132g). I recommend the Mophie Juice Pack over the Newdery Battery Case, but a lot of people will be swayed by that price difference. Verdict The Mophie Juice Pack battery case provides 50% backup power and protection for the iPhone 15. The internal 2,400mAh battery is one of the lowest-capacity options but the benefit of this is a much-reduced hump at the back of the slim case, in comparison to larger 5000mAh capacity battery cases that offer a full recharge but are bulkier and heavier. It is undeniably more expensive than the Chinese competition, but it has a superior build, and even at the higher price is a great solution for people who find their phone fading during the day or who need to use their phone for long periods away from their wall charger. 'Opposition wants to bury me alive, but people are my security shield', asserts Modi

Nandurbar (Maharashtra): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said some in the opposition want to bury him alive, but people of the country are his security shield and they won't let any harm come to him. Lashing out at the opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) headed by former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, the BJP stalwart asserted the akli (fake) Shiv Sena abuses him in such a way that it pleases its favourite vote-bank. The nakli Shiv Sena wants to bury me alive. They abuse me in such a way that it is liked by their favourite vote-bank. They also take a bomb blast accused for election campaigning, Modi said while addressing a campaign rally in north Maharashtra's Nandurbar in support of BJP candidate Hina Gavit. The BJP on Thursday claimed 1993 serial bomb blasts accused Iqbal Musa alias Baba Chauhan was seen in a Lok Sabha campaign rally of Shiv Sena (UBT) Mumbai North West candidate Amol Kirtikar. The allegations were denied by Musa as well as Kirtikar, both of whom claimed they did not know each other. He maintained the opposition has lost people's support and trust, and that is why their political space is shrinking. People of India are my security cover. They can't bury me alive or dead, the PM told the crowd. He was apparently referring to Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut's alleged comments about burying him (Modi) in Maharashtra just like Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The Congress says 'Modi teri kabar khudegi' (Modi, your grave will be dug). While abusing me they keep in mind voter appeasement. (Shiv Sena founder) Balasaheb Thackeray must be very sad, averred the BJP's star campaigner. The Congress is an ally of the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra. Nandurbar is among 11 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra that will go to polls in the fourth phase on May 13.

Parties look to end campaign with a flourish in Telangana

HYDERABAD: As the clock ticks closer to voting day, May 13, in Telangana, all major parties plan to bring their campaigning to an end on May 11 with a flourish by deploying their top leaders in the hope that they would swing neutral voters in their favour. As mandated by the Election Commission of India, all parties will have to wind up their campaign by 6 pm on May 11, to enable the 48-hour silent period. A surge of campaign activity is expected to be seen in the last two days of campaigning, with stalwarts from various parties crisscrossing the state to sway voters ahead of voting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be leading the BJP charge with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda heading the flanks. Likewise, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge will be commanding the Congress forces with former party president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on the right and left flanks. Similarly, the BRS army will be led by party supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao and his trusted lieutenants KT Rama Rao and T Harish Rao. Modi is scheduled to address public meetings in Narayanpet and Hyderabad on Friday, for which the saffron party is expected to pull out all stops and mobilise massive crowds. Overall, Modi would have addressed six campaign rallies in the state, including roadshows. The Congress will press into service its general secretary Priyanka Gandhi who is slated to address two public meetings in Kamareddy and Tandur on May 11, while Kharge will hold a press conference at a private hotel in Hyderabad along with INDIA bloc leaders. Rahul Gandhi has already participated in four meetings in Telangana for the Lok Sabha elections. KCR will wrap up the BRS campaign in Siddipet Assembly constituency, which is part of the Medak Lok Sabha seat and his native segment. The former chief minister has been taking part in roadshows since the past 20 days and addressing massive gatherings in various constituencies. Harish Rao and Rama Rao will also conclude their campaign along with the party president on May 11. Apart from the political heavyweights, the campaign trail has also been lit with the participation of celebrities from the film industry. Actress Khushbu joined the BJP state president G Kishan Reddys roadshow, while actor Daggubati Venkatesh lent his support to Congress candidate R Raghurama Reddy in Khammam. Once campaigning ends, senior leaders of all the parties will turn their attention to poll management. Their focus on booth-level management and voter outreach will go a long way in determining the winners and losers in a majority of the seats in the coming elections.

Tarapur Nuclear Reactor Restart Delayed Due to Outstanding Component Deliveries

Tarapur Nuclear Reactor Restart Delayed Due to Outstanding Component Deliveries The nations first two nuclear reactors at the Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) that have been closed for repairs since 2020 will take another five months to resume operation due to a delay in the delivery of an essential component, officials said on Friday. Officials said they were waiting for some special metal pipes from Italy but the tubes did not arrive in time. The manufacturer is finding it difficult to produce the pipes as the order is quite small, they said. Initially scheduled for reactivation on May 9, the reactors will remain offline until October, pending the awaited supplies, an official said. The two Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs), each with a capacity of 160 megawatts, were installed in 1969 at TAPS, about 100 km from Mumbai on the countrys western coast. The BWRs boil water which is converted into steam to run the turbine for electricity production and then recycled back to water through a condenser to be re-used in the heat-generation process. The overhaul, estimated at Rs 351 crore, aims to address immediate concerns and extend the reactors operational life by a decade. Additionally, TAPS has two Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors, each with a capacity of 540 megawatts. India now has 22 operating reactors, with an installed capacity of 6,780 megawatts. The ongoing repairs to the BWRs involve replacing the primary recirculation system, installed in 1969, to rectify microscopic cracks detected in the external circulation system adjacent to both reactors, an official said. Sanjay Mulkalwar, station director of TAPS, reiterated the reactors' significance in the region's power grid, assuring continued operation for at least the next decade. Ongoing tests have affirmed a substantial remaining operational life for both reactors, he said. The repairs involve challenges like potential radiation exposure, space constraints, and intricate utility networks complicating the pipeline replacement process. Specialized stainless steel 316 LN pipes, sourced from Italy, are central to the repairs, though their delayed delivery has caused the current setback, officials said. Despite the delay, authorities remain optimistic about the project's completion by mid-September, followed by rigorous testing before power generation resumes in November.

EXPLAINER-What risks do advanced AI models pose in the wrong hands?

EXPLAINER-What risks do advanced AI models pose in the wrong hands? The Biden administration is poised to open up a new front in its effort to safeguard U.S. AI from China and Russia with preliminary plans to place guardrails around the most advanced AI models, Reuters reported on Wednesday. Government and private sector researchers worry U.S. adversaries could use the models, which mine vast amounts of text and images to summarize information and generate content, to wage aggressive cyber attacks or even create potent biological weapons. Here are some threats posed by AI: DEEPFAKES AND MISINFORMATION Deepfakes - realistic yet fabricated videos created by AI algorithms trained on copious online footage - are surfacing on social media, blurring fact and fiction in the polarized world of U.S. politics. While such synthetic media has been around for several years, it's been turbocharged over the past year by a slew of new generative AI tools such as Midjourney that make it cheap and easy to create convincing deepfakes. Image creation tools powered by artificial intelligence from companies including OpenAI and Microsoft, can be used to produce photos that could promote election or voting-related disinformation, despite each having policies against creating misleading content, researchers said in a report in March. Some disinformation campaigns simply harness the ability of AI to mimic real news articles as a means of disseminating false information. While major social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have made efforts to prohibit and remove deepfakes, their effectiveness at policing such content varies. For example, last year, a Chinese government-controlled news site using a generative AI platform pushed a previously circulated false claim that the United States was running a lab in Kazakhstan to create biological weapons for use against China, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in its 2024 homeland threat assessment. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, speaking at an AI event in Washington on Wednesday, said the problem has no easy solutions because it combines the capacity of AI with he intent of state, non-state actors, to use disinformation at scale, to disrupt democracies, to advance propaganda, to shape perception in the world. Right now the offense is beating the defense big time, he said. BIOWEAPONS The American intelligence community, think tanks and academics are increasingly concerned about risks posed by foreign bad actors gaining access to advanced AI capabilities. Researchers at Gryphon Scientific and Rand Corporation noted that advanced AI models can provide information that could help create biological weapons. Gryphon studied how large language models (LLM) - computer programs that draw from massive amounts of text to generate responses to queries - could be used by hostile actors to cause harm in the domain of life sciences and found they can provide information that could aid a malicious actor in creating a biological weapon by providing useful, accurate and detailed information across every step in this pathway. They found, for example, that an LLM could provide post-doctoral level knowledge to trouble-shoot problems when working with a pandemic-capable virus. Rand research showed that LLMs could help in the planning and execution of a biological attack. They found an LLM could for example suggest aerosol delivery methods for botulinum toxin. CYBERWEAPONS DHS said cyber actors would likely use AI to develop new tools to enable larger-scale, faster, efficient, and more evasive cyber attacks against critical infrastructure including pipelines and railways, in its 2024 homeland threat assessment. China and other adversaries are developing AI technologies that could undermine U.S. cyber defenses, DHS said, including generative AI programs that support malware attacks. Microsoft said in a February report that it had tracked hacking groups affiliated with the Chinese and North Korean governments as well as Russian military intelligence, and Iran's Revolutionary Guard, as they tried to perfect their hacking campaigns using large language models. NEW EFFORTS TO ADDRESS THREATS A bipartisan group of lawmakers unveiled a bill late Wednesday that would make it easier for the Biden administration to impose export controls on AI models, in a bid to safeguard the prized U.S. technology against foreign bad actors. The bill, sponsored by House Republicans Michael McCaul, John Molenaar, Max Wise and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi, would also give the Commerce Department express authority to bar Americans from working with foreigners to develop AI systems that pose risks to U.S. national security. Tony Samp, an AI policy advisor in Washington, said policymakers in Washington are trying to foster innovation and avoid heavy-handed regulation that stifles innovation as they seek to address the many risks posed by the technology. But he warned that cracking down on AI development through regulation could inhibit potential breakthroughs in areas like drug discovery, infrastructure, national security, and others, and cede ground to competitors overseas.

Fierce battle on cards in Ongole Assembly segment

ONGOLE: The Ongole Assembly constituency, a key coastal region in Prakasam district, is the administrative capital of the district. With the highest number of voters (around 2.39 lakh), the segment plays a pivotal role in deciding the fate of the contenders in the coming elections. Further as a district headquarters and stronghold of fishermen folks, its political mood radiates impact throughout the district and a few surrounding places which fall into the limits of neighbouring Bapatla and Nellore district. Since its inception in 1951, a total of 17 elections were held from 1952 to 2019, which gave an opportunity for people to elect many great public leaders and political stalwarts like Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, CR Reddy, BVL Narayana, S Jivaratnam Naidu and others. While YSRC has fielded sitting MLA Balineni Srinivasa Reddy, who won Ongole MLA seat for a record five times, TDP nominated Damacharla Janardhana Rao to win back the segment. Besides Balineni and Damacharla, Turkapalli Naga Lakshmi (Congress) and Tatiparti Venkata Swamy (BSP) are also in the poll fray. The Ongole Assembly constituency has only two mandalsOngole and Kothapatnam. The residents of the constituency have been suffering from scarcity of potable water for a long time as there is no sufficient surface water available in Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC) limits. The Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC) authorities are drawing water from the Kandula Obula Reddy Gundlakamma Reservoir as well as from the Ramatheertham Balancing Reservoir near Chimakurthy to fill-up two Summer Storage (SS-1 & SS-2) tanks to cater the drinking water needs of the people. With the efforts of MLA Balineni Srinivasa Reddy, the State government has sanctioned around Rs 400 crore for the water supply schemes and Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) works are underway. Another major issue is the pollution plaguing Pothuraju Canal. To address this problem, around Rs 100 crore was sanctioned by the government to start the desilting, expansion and revetment works of the canal. The government has also sanctioned around 22,000 houses to the urban poor families of the OMC limits. However, Buckingham canal development works, Ethamukkala flyover works, city beautification works and other infrastructural development works are yet to be taken up. In a bid to bank the anti-incumbency votes, TDP candidate Damacharla Janardhana Rao has intensified election campaigning to win over his rival Balineni Srinivasa Reddy. Exuding confidence that the tripartite alliance will form the government with thumping majority, he said, People across the State are vexed with YS Jagan Reddy led YSRC governments anti-public rule. I have a separate manifesto for the comprehensive development and welfare of the Ongole constituency people and immediately after forming the government, we will complete all our election promises, including tap water connections to every households, Pothuraju canal modernisation works, TIDCO houses to all eligible, beautification works, completion of Ethamukkala flyover and other key development works.

Stench from waste puts off visitors to memorial in Tiruchy

TIRUCHY: Visitors to the memorial of language martyr Keezhapazhuvur Chinnasamy at Kulimikkarai Road in Alwarthoppu, which was renovated last year, complain of being unable to stay longer than a few minutes as the indiscriminate dumping of waste, believed to be primarily from butcher shops nearby, on the premises of the corporations micro-composting centre hardly metres away raises a stench in the locality. Locals demand immediate steps for the removal of the waste as well as the violators to be penalised. While the corporation last year installed roofing and a display board at the burial site of Keezhapazhuvur Chinnasamy, who ended his life on January 25, 1964 in Tiruchy during the anti-Hindi agitation, locals pointing to the dumping of waste near it say more needs to be done. G Vijayanand, a local, said the issue of waste dumping became rampant about three months ago when a gate to the micro-composting centre appeared removed. Some butcher shop owners come at night and dump waste on the premises of the micro-composting centre. The stench emanating from the waste makes it difficult for anyone visiting the memorial. How can one organise an event to pay homage to the martyr? Nobody would be able to spend even five minutes there due to the stench. Such indiscriminate dumping of waste continues most of the time. The corporation must take action against those dumping the waste. Priya Mohan, another resident, said, If the corporation has funds to construct a memorial for Keezhapazhuvur Chinnasamy, why can't it instal CCTV cameras at the site? This will help identify those dumping animal waste near the memorial. If the authorities concerned continue to be indifferent, it would mean an insult to language martyrs. When enquired, a senior corporation official said, We will direct the sanitation official concerned to inspect the location and take necessary steps to clear the garbage. We will also take steps to identify those dumping the waste.
