MVA accuses Mahayuti of using cash for votes

Mumbai: The fourth phase of polling in Maharashtra was marred by allegations of money distribution levelled by opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) parties against the ruling alliance Mahayuti. Polling was held for 11 Lok Sabha seats Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Raver, Jalna, Aurangabad, Maval, Pune, Shirur, Ahmednagar, Shirdi and Beed in the fourth phase in Maharashtra on Monday. The opposition MVA leaders alleged that large amounts of cash were reportedly distributed ostensibly to buy votes. While Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut alleged the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena distributed Rs 12 crore in Nashik, Congresss Pune candidate Ravindra Dhangekar protested inside a local police station demanding FIR against BJP for distribution of cash. NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar also accused BJP candidate Sujay Vikhe-Patil of giving cash for votes in Ahmednagar. Posting a purported video of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde alighting from a helicopter in Nashik with two security personnel lugging at least two heavy bags, Raut demanded to know why the CM travelled with such bulky luggage for just a two-hour-long poll campaign trip. Raut claimed that the bags hauled by the CMs security personnel may have been filled with around Rs 12-13 crore and demanded a statement from the government. NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar posted another supposed video showing bundles of cash lying on the road in the Ahmednagar constituency and claimed that it contained prasad for disbursing among the voters. Today, a packet arrived here in the name of everyone called Raja with the prasad and a plea by the guardian minister to vote for his party. The irony is that in many villages, the local refused to accept the prasad and in others the village elders siphoned off half the prasad, said Pawar in a jibe at the BJPs candidate from Ahmednagar Sujay Vikhe-Patil, who is battling against NCP (SP)s challenger Nilesh Lanke. Pawar said more complaints of prasad packets are pouring in and alleged that there are reports of more than Rs 2,000 crore cash being splurged by the ruling side to get votes and buy out leaders of opposition parties. Dhangekar alleged that last night in Pune, a large amount of cash was distributed during the weekend to lure the voters in the Sahakar Nagar slums in his constituency reportedly supporters of the ruling MahaYuti. State BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule dismissed the MVAs allegations saying They are staring at defeat in the allegations and hence it is not surprising that they are levelling such baseless charges. Meanwhile, the NCP (SP) alleged wrongdoing after CCTV cameras got turned off for 45 minutes at a godown where the EVMs from the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency were stored in Pune district. The election authorities, however, clarified that a cable of the cameras had to be removed for a short period during some electrical work on the premises in the morning.

Maratha polarisation, agrarian crisis loom over Maha battle

MUMBAI: In the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections, 11 constituencies will go to poll on Monday in Maharashtra where BJP-led Mahayuti has a major task to contain polarisation of Maratha community and counter agrarian issues to retain the seats. There are 298 candidates in fray in Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Raver, Jalna, Aurangabad, Mawal, Pune, Shirur, Ahmednagar, Shirdi and Beed seats, where votes will be cast in 23, 284 polling booths. In this phase, BJP has seven MPs while Shiv Sena has two, and NCP (SP) and AIMIMone each. In Beed, former union minister late Gopinath Mundes daughter Pankaja Munde is pitted against Sharad Pawar-led NCP candidate Bajrang Sonawane. Munde is banking on OBC communities and looking to win over Maratha community. Her opponent Sonawane, who lost 2019 Lok sabha election to her sister Pritam Munde, is relying on 3 Ms -- Marathas, Mahars and Muslims. He pins hopes on Maratha polarisation and farmers anger to counter OBC polarisation. In Pune, BJPs Murlidhar Mohan is contesting against Congress MLA Ravindra Dhangekar. PM Narendra Modi and MNS chief Raj Thackeray campaigned for him while Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray sought votes for Dhangekar. Focusing on national issues, Mohar sought votes in Modis name. Dhangekar raised local issues. In recent Kasaba Peth assembly bypoll, Dhangekar had emerged as a giant killer by defeating the BJP candidate. BJP candidate Sujay Vikhe Patil is contesting against NCP (SP) candidate Nilesh Lanke in Ahmednagar. Patil is son of senior BJP leader and revenue minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and his great grand-father had started co-operative-based sugar factory in Pravara Nagar in Ahmednagar. Lanke has been saying he will work for people, not for big business houses. He is capitalising on farmers anger due to fall in onion prices and rise in fertilizer and chemical prices. Aurangabad is witnessing a tri-angular contest among AIMIM MP Imtiyaz Jalil, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Senas Chandrakant Khaire and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Senas Sandeep Bhumare. Shindes Sena is trying to polarise voters on Hindu-Muslim lines, AIMIM candidate is trying to consolidate his own vote bank and Khaire is raising Bhumare getting liquor licences in family members names. Raver seat has been a BJP bastion for the last 30 years and Leva Patil community candidate gets elected from here. BJP has fielded former BJP minister Eknath Khadses daughter-in-law and MP Raksha Khadse who belongs to Leva Patil community while NCP (SP) has fieled Sriram Patil, a Maratha. Apart from caste consolidations, banana farmers issues are much talked about in this election. Political observers say that farmers issues will have key impact apart from Maratha quota leader Manoj Patils stir. Opposition is heavily relying on anti-incumbency, raising farmers and local issues and caste combination, while BJP is trying to consolidate Hindu votes, an analyst said. Tri-angular contest Aurangabad will have a tri-angular contest among AIMIM MP Imtiyaz Jalil, Uddhav Thackeray-led Chandrakant Khaire and Eknath Shinde-led Sandeep Bhumare who is banking on pro-Hindu ideology.

Elections to the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra will be held in five phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20. West Bengal: Fate of several star candidates to be decided Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, TMC's Shatrughan Sinha, Mahua Moitra and Yusuf Pathan, BJP's SS Ahluwalia and Dilip Ghosh will be among the candidates whose fates will be decided in the EVMs as eight Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal will go to the polls in the fourth phase on Monday. Spread over Murshidabad, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman and Birbhum districts, the problems flagged by voters in these constituencies vary from migrant labour, drinking water supply and drying up of industries, while the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) notification is a bone of contention between the TMC and BJP in some places. Polling will be held in Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat (SC), Bardhaman Purba (SC), Bardhaman-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur (SC) and Birbhum in West Bengal in the fourth round of the Lok Sabha polls. Film star-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha is seeking re-election from Asansol and is pitted against the BJP's veteran leader SS Ahluwalia. In Krishnanagar, the TMC has put up its outspoken leader Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the 17th Lok Sabha last December, against BJP's Amrita Roy, a member of the Krishnanagar royal family. Former Bengali cine celebrity Satabdi Roy is seeking a fourth term from the Birbhum seat, which is now shorn of its maverick TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, lodged in Tihar jail in connection with an alleged cattle smuggling case. Congress' leader in the outgoing Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, fighting for a sixth consecutive term from Baharampur, is set to see his clout tested in the seat considered his fortress for the last three decades, with the TMC having fielded former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan and the BJP's Nirmal Kumar Saha. BJP's former West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh, whose controversial comments on various issues and against TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee have often made headlines, is contesting from Bardhaman-Durgapur, having been shifted by the saffron party from Kharagpur, where he had won in 2019. Trinamool Congress has put up former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad from the seat, while CPI(M) has fielded Sukriti Ghosal. BJP's Jagannath Sarkar is seeking re-election from Ranaghat constituency, which has a significant Matua population. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been a profound issue of debate here between the saffron party and the TMC. TMC announced the candidature of Mukut Mani Adhikari for the seat soon after he joined the party, leaving the BJP, of which he was an MLA from Ranaghat Dakshin assembly segment. Asit Kumar Mal is seeking re-election from Bolpur on a TMC ticket, having been pitted against Priya Saha of BJP and Shyamali Pradhan of the CPI (M). In Bardhaman Purba, TMC fielded psychiatrist Sharmila Sarkar against BJP's folk singer candidate Ashim Kumar Sarkar, who is the saffron party's MLA from Haringhata Assembly segment, and CPI(M)'s Nirav Kha. Jharkhand: Four reserved seats in fray The stage is set for voting in Jharkhand's four Lok Sabha constituenciesSinghbhum, Khunti, Lohardaga and Palamuon Monday amidst heavy security deployments in all polling booths. Of the four Lok Sabha seats, three are reserved for Schedule Tribe (ST), while Palamu is reserved for Schedule Caste (SC) candidates. Interestingly, the number of female voters is higher than the number of male voters in three tribal seats. More than 64.37 lakh electors, including 32.07 lakh female voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the four constituencies in the state, an election official said. A total of 45 candidates, including seven from Khunti, 15 from Lohardaga, nine from Palamu and 14 from Singhbhum, are in the poll fray. An interesting fight is likely in all three tribal seats as the JMM-led ruling alliance and the BJP-led opposition in Jharkhand have put all their efforts into galvanising people's support in their favour. In Singhbhum, BJP's Geeta Kora, who had won the seat on Congress ticket in 2019, has locked horns with INDIA bloc's Joba Manjhi, who is a JMM MLA from Manoharpur assembly seat. Khunti is heading for a direct fight between Union Minister and BJP nominee Arjun Munda and the INDIA bloc's Kalicharan Munda. The Lohardaga seat might see a triangular contest after JMM's Bishunpur MLA Chamra Linda filed nomination as an Independent candidate against BJP's Samri Oraon and INDIA bloc's Sukhdeo Bhagat. The Palamu seat is set for a direct fight between the BJP's sitting MP Vishnu Dayal Ram and RJD's Mamta Bhuiyan as INDIA bloc candidate.

The 11 constituencies - Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Raver, Jalna, Aurangabad, Maval, Pune, Shirur, Ahmednagar, Shirdi and Beed - are spread across the central Marathwada as well as northern and western regions of the state. Voting will take place from 7 am to 6 pm at 23,284 polling centres, according to data provided by the office of the state's chief electoral officer. The BJP has renominated Union minister Danve from Jalna constituency and Sujay Vikhe Patil in Ahmednagar, and fielded former state minister Pankaja Munde from Beed. Actor Amol Kolhe is the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) candidate from Shirur Lok Sabha seat in Pune district. In Marathwada, it is the BJP versus Congress in Jalna, and the Uddhav Thackeray-headed Shiv Sena (UBT) versus Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena in Aurangabad. In Beed, the BJP has fielded former state minister Pankaja Munde instead of sitting MP and her younger sister Pritam Munde. Pankaja's main rival will be Bajrang Sonawane of the NCP (SP). In Shirur, sitting MP Kolhe of the NCP (SP) is pitted against Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil, who is contesting as candidate of the NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. In Ahmednagar in western Maharashtra, BJP's Sujay Vikhe Patil is taking on Nilesh Lanke of the NCP (SP). In Jalgaon, it is a BJP versus NCP (SP) battle. In Raver also, which comes under Jalgaon district, the BJP and the Sharad Pawar-led outfit are taking on each other. In western Maharashtra's Maval, the two rival Shiv Senas are locked in a bitter fight post the 2022 split in the party. In Pune city, the BJP and the Congress are the main contenders. In Shirdi constituency, where the famous Saibaba temple is located, the Shiv Sena led by Shinde is taking on the Shiv Sena (UBT). Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second highest after 80 in Uttar Pradesh. Out of the 48 seats, voting has been completed in 24 in the first three phases of elections. Khadse Gets Death Threats, Caller Names Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel

Mumbai : Ahead of Lok Sabha polls, Maharashtra political circle was shocked with the reports of former state minister Eknath Khadse, who has announced his plans to join the BJP again, receiving death threats by an unidentified person on the names of gangsters Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel. The senior NCP leader has lodged a police complaint at Muktai Nagar police station in Jalgaon district against the unknown caller. According to police, Khadse received calls on April 15 and 16 from unidentified numbers. The caller mentioned the names of gangsters Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel while threatening the veteran leader. Khadse said, on April 15, around 8 a.m., he received a threatening call saying, I will kill you. At first, I thought it was a prank, so I did not take it seriously. But the calls continued with two different numbers, both seemed to have USA based numbers. The caller said I will face dire consequences and that I will be killed. On April 16 morning, I lodged a police complaint at Muktai Nagar police station against the unknown caller. I have not received any special security from the police, he said. Khadse, the former BJP-man, is currently with the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar). However, he had earlier this month announced that he would soon return to the BJP. A police official said, A case of non-cognizable offense has been registered against an unknown person under relevant provisions. At present, the police have not been able to trace the callers yet, but the investigation is underway. Earlier too, Khadse had received threat calls from the underworld. Khadse was revenue minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government in Maharashtra, however, he had to resign in June 2016 following cases of land-related dispute with alleged interest of his family surfaced. He had accused the state party leadership, especially Fadnavis, for his exit from the cabinet. He quit the party in October 2020 after being sidelined and immediately joined the undivided NCP. He was elected to the legislative council in July 2022. His daughter-in-law Raksha Khadse is the sitting MP from Raver constituency, and again fighting on the BJP ticket in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Uddhav Bats for Coalition Government in India

Mumbai : Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said that the upcoming general election is a battle to save democracy and stop dictatorship. He advocated for the coalition government in the country. Without taking names of Raj Thackeray and Prakash Ambedkar, he said that the people are well aware about the people who have extended their unconditional support to the BJP and are pretending to be contesting against the BJP. On the occasion of Gudi Padwa, the beginning of Marathi new year, Raj Thackeray announced his unconditional support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr. Ambedkar has decided to contest Lok Sabha elections separately after his alliance talks with the Maha Vikas Aghadi failed. The people now know who is pretending to contest the election against the BJP, but actually helping the Modi-led party. They will support those who are fighting to save the Constitution and democracy, Mr. Thackeray said. Claiming that coalition governments worked better in India, the Shiv Sena UBT leader said, We are against the dictatorial and authoritative government. The country has a history where every alliance government, be it of Atal Bihari Vajpayee or Dr Manmohan Singh, has performed well. In fact, the country has progressed the most only during alliance governments. Speaking at his residence Matoshree in Mumbai, where office-bearers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) from Jalgaon district joined his party, Mr. Thackeray said that for the first time in the last 10 years, large scale discontent was visible in the country. Autocracy is detrimental to the country. Barring some exceptions, coalition governments have worked in the country. We want a strong country and a coalition government. We want a strong leader, but who can take everyone together, he said.

MVA seals poll pact in Maharashtra; Sena (UBT) gets 21 seats

Mumbai: The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi on Tuesday announced its seat-sharing formula for the Lok Sabha polls with the Shiv Sena (UBT) getting the major chunk of 21 seats, while the Congress will contest 17 seats and the NCP (SP) 10. The Congress gave up its claim on the contentious Sangli and Bhiwandi seats, which will now be contested by the Sena (UBT) and the NCP (SP), respectively. While the Sena (UBT) said the goal of the alliance was to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress said it has decided to be large-hearted to achieve this objective. NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and state Congress president Nana Patole announced the poll pact for the 48 parliamentary seats in the state after weeks of hectic negotiations. Addressing a press conference at 'Shivalaya', the Shiv Sena (UBT) office in south Mumbai, party head and former state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said the seat-sharing deal has been reached and in an alliance, winning is important and defeating the BJP is the goal. When victory against the BJP is the larger goal, we have to set aside certain differences, he said when asked about the Shiv Sena (UBT) refusing to give Sangli seat to the Congress. Thackeray said there was a strange coincidence of surya grahan (solar eclipse), amavasya (new moon) and the BJP rally on the same day (Monday). Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech yesterday was not that of a prime minister. When we respond, please don't take it as an insult of the prime minister. Our criticism will be about a leader of a corrupt party, Thackeray said to a query on Modi referring to his party as fake Shiv Sena. It is not right for a leader of the party of extortionists to call us fake, he said. The BJP is a party of extortionists and this was seen after the electoral bonds scam was exposed, Thackeray claimed. Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole said his party has decided to be large-hearted to achieve the final goal of defeating PM Modi and the BJP. The Congress workers will fight the BJP and ensure victory of the MVA candidates in Sangli and Bhiwandi, he said. Our workers will never forget how the BJP ill-treated our leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, he said. Patole said the parties of Thackeray and Sharad Pawar were hijacked by rebels. Leaders of both the original parties are with us and Modi calls the Uddhav Thackeray-led party as fake Shiv Sena, he said. As part of the deal, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has got Jalgaon, Parbhani, Nashik, Palghar, Kalyan, Thane, Raigad, Maval, Osmanabad, Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, Buldhana, Hathkanangkale, Aurangabad, Shirdi, Sangli, Hingoli, Yavatmal-Washim, Mumbai South, Mumbai South Central, Mumbai North West and Mumbai North East seats. The NCP(SP) will contest Baramati, Shirur, Satara, Bhiwandi, Dindori, Madha, Raver, Wardhan, Ahmednagar South and Beed seats. As former minister Khadse heads to BJP, his daughter says will stay in Sharad Pawar's party

As former minister Khadse heads to BJP, his daughter says will stay in Sharad Pawar's party Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Rohini Khadse, whose father and MLC Eknath Khadse is set to return to the BJP, on Monday ruled out any switch over and asserted she will remain with her current party and follow its ideology. Eknath Khadse, a former state cabinet minister, has said he would be returning to the BJP in a fortnight after snapping ties with the NCP (SP), which he joined in 2020 post spending almost four decades in the saffron party. Rohini Khadse, who was in Pune to attend a meeting at NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar's residence at Modibaug, told reporters she is not planning any switch over. Asked about her father's decision to go back to the BJP, she said he is competent to speak on his political move and has already clarified his stand. ''I have decided to remain with Sharad Pawar saheb and the NCP's ideology. The NCP has given us support in the last three-and-a-half years. Considering that support and the party's ideology, I can not think of leaving him. So I will remain in the party. I am here because I like the NCP's ideology. One should work where he or she finds happiness,'' she maintained. Rohini Khadse said her party workers and leaders were with her. Notably, the BJP has given ticket to Eknath Khadse's daughter-in-law Raksha from the Raver Lok Sabha constituency in Jalgaon district, from where she is the party's sitting MP. Eknath Khadse had first resigned as a minister following allegations of irregularities in a land deal in Pune district and quit the BJP in 2016. In 2020, he joined the undivided NCP after differences with senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, who is now a deputy CM. ''I have decided to go back to the BJP as it is my home. I have served the party for four decades. I express my gratitude towards Sharad Pawar who helped me during distress. I have spoken to BJP president J P Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. I will join the party in New Delhi in the next 15 days,'' he said earlier.

Amid Khadse's announcement of returning to BJP, Mahajan calls him 'extinguished lamp'

Amid Khadse's announcement of returning to BJP, Mahajan calls him 'extinguished lamp' Maharashtra BJP leader Girish Mahajan on Sunday termed his former colleague Eknath Khadse an ''extinguished lamp''. The comment comes amid Khadse's announcement that he would be going back to the BJP, which he had quit in 2020 before joining the undivided Nationalist Congress Party. Khadse chose to side with Sharad Pawar when the NCP split in July last year after Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs joined the Eknath Shinde government. ''He is like an extinguished lamp. Even a gram panchayat is not in his hand. He used to control a bank, but the board of directors has also changed, and new board members do not listen to him. Why make his decision so important?'' Mahajan told reporters. His wife and daughter have lost elections in the past, said Mahajan, who has been Khadse's arch-rival in Jalgaon district. Incidentally, Khadse, who was leader of opposition in the Assembly between 2009 and 2014, was a contender for the post of chief minister when the BJP won 120-odd seats in the 2014 Assembly polls. However, he was beaten to the top post by Devendra Fadnavis. Khadse had to be content with some important portfolios but was made to resign from the Fadnavis ministry in 2016 after he faced allegations of irregularities in a land deal. His daughter Rohini Khadse was given a ticket by the BJP in the 2019 Assembly polls from Muktainagar but she was defeated by Independent candidate Chandrakant Nimba Patil. Eknath Khadse had at the time blamed BJP leaders for the defeat. MLA Patil said he has extended support to the NDA but added he would be able to comment only once Khadse joins the BJP officially. Meanwhile, Rohini Khadse, in a post on X earlier in the day, said she would not follow her father into the BJP and would remain with the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). Khadse's daughter-in-law Raksha Khadse remains BJP Lok Sabha MP from Raver since 2014.

Speaking at a news conference, Thackeray also declared the candidatures of Satyajit Patil (Hatkanangale), Bharti Kamdi (Palghar) and Karan Pawar (Jalgaon). If his Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ally Congress was not keen on contesting the Mumbai North constituency, his party will field a candidate there, Thackeray said. The BJP has fielded Union minister Piyush Goyal from Mumbai North. The Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde has not yet declared its candidate from Kalyan. Thackeray said Darekar-Rane and Bharti Kamdi are grassroots workers of the party. Karan Pawar, a former president of Parola Municipal Council in north Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, emerged as a surprise choice of Shiv Sena (UBT). Pawar, a BJP leader, joined the Thackeray camp along with sitting BJP MP Unmesh Patil earlier in the day. Unmesh Patil quit the BJP after he was denied a ticket from Jalgaon. The party has fielded Smita Wagh in his place this time. Thackeray also indicated that Shiv Sena (UBT) will not relent on Sangli constituency where it has already declared its candidate (Chandrahar Patil) though the Congress is seeking the seat. The candidature of Chandrahar Patil caused heartburn in the Congress which wanted to field Vishal Patil, grandson of former chief minister late Vasantdada Patil, from Sangli, its traditional bastion in western Maharashtra. ''The Shiv Sena (UBT) has ceded its traditional Kolhapur and Ramtek seats to Congress,'' Thackeray pointed out, adding that his party had already started campaigning in Sangli. Asked if there would be a friendly fight in Sangli, Thackeray said, ''Friendly fights are useless because when there is friendship, there is no contest.'' The Congress is also upset over Shiv Sena (UBT) fielding Thackeray's close aide Anil Desai from Mumbai South-Central constituency. ''If our ally (Congress) is not keen on contesting Mumbai North, we will field a candidate from that seat. We are contesting four (out of six) seats in Mumbai. We want the Congress to win rest of the two seats in Mumbai, and Shiv Sena (UBT) workers will help them,'' Thackeray added. Satyajit Patil's candidature from Hatkanangale in western Maharashtra is seen as a jolt to Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana's Raju Shetti who was seeking Thackeray's support to contest from this constituency. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said the party had conveyed to Shetti that he should contest on the `burning torch' symbol of Shiv Sena (UBT), which he did not agree to. Local party workers were also of the opinion that whoever contests as MVA candidate should contest on the `burning torch' symbol, he said. Shetti won the Hatkanangale seat in 2009 and 2014, but in 2019 he lost to the undivided Shiv Sena's Dhairyasheel Mane. Palghar seat is currently represented by undivided Shiv Sena's Rajendra Gavit.

MUMBAI: Unmesh Patil, the BJP MP from Jalgaon in north Maharashtra who failed to get the saffron party ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, joined the opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday. Patil joined the Sena (UBT) at 'Matoshree', the residence of party head and former state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray in suburban Mumbai, along with his followers. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said Patil joining the party will bolster its prospects in Jalgaon and north Maharashtra and make its path to victory easier. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has replaced Patil with Smita Wagh in the Jalgaon parliamentary constituency. Patil met Raut here on Tuesday, sparking speculation about his future political move. The BJP is fighting the Lok Sabha polls, to be held in five phases in Maharashtra from April 19 to May 20, as part of the 'Mahayuti' (grand alliance) with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) headed by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar as its two other constituents. LS polls: Sena (UBT) releases 1st list of 17 candidates; ex-Union ministers Geete, Sawant find place

Mumbai, Mar 27 (PTI) The Shiv Sena (UBT), a constituent of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), on Wednesday released its first list of 17 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, and said it will contest a total of 22 seats in the state. It nominated former Union ministers Anant Geete and Arvind Sawant from Raigad and South Mumbai constituencies respectively. It re-nominated all five sitting Lok Sabha MPs, who stayed with party chief Uddhav Thackeray, following the outfit's split in 2022. These lawmakers are Arvind Sawant (South Mumbai), Rajan Vichare (Thane), Vinayak Raut (Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg), Omraje Nimbalkar (Dharashiv) and Sanjay Jadhav (Parbhani). The Sena (UBT) also fielded its Rajya Sabha member Anil Desai from Mumbai South-Central, party leader Sanjay Raut said. Desai's tenure is coming to an end next month. With this, the party has now fielded four candidates from Mumbai. Sawant had resigned as a Union minister after the undivided Shiv Sena quit the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the power-sharing agreement in Maharashtra. Vichare represents Thane, the home turf of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, whose rebellion triggered a split in the Shiv Sena founded by Bal Thackeray in 1966. The Sena (UBT) also fielded veteran party leader Chandrakant Khaire from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Khaire had lost to All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate Imtiaz Jaleel in 2019. From Mumbai North-East, the party fielded Sanjay Patil, a former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA and MP who later joined the Shiv Sena. From Mumbai North-West, the party nominated Amol Kirtikar, son of Shiv Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar, who owes allegiance to CM Shinde-led Sena. The party also named Narendra Khedekar as its candidate from Buldhana, Sanjay Deshmukh from Yavatmal-Washim, Sanjay Wakchowre-Patil from Maval, Rajabhau Waje from Nashik, Bhausaheb Wakchaure from Shirdi and Nagesh Patil Ashtikar from Hingoli. The Uddhav Thackeray-led party is a constituent of the opposition MVA alliance in the state. Another MVA ally, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) is yet to officially declare its candidates in the state for the April-May Lok Sabha polls. On the other hand, the Congress, which is also a part of the state-level grouping of the opposition parties, has declared its candidates on some seats where there is no tussle with its alliance partners. Maharashtra, which has 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second highest after Uttar Pradesh (80), will vote in five phases starting from April 19. Shiv Sena will contest a total of 22 seats. Candidates for five seats will be announced in the next two days for Palghar, Kalyan Dombivli, Mumbai North, Hatkanangale, Jalgaon. The names have been finalised, Raut said. He said Raju Shetti of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana wants to contest from the Hatkanangale seat with the support of the Shiv Sena (UBT). This is the seat the undivided Shiv Sena won in 2019. The party will take a call on whether to field a candidate from Hatkanangale or support Shetti, he added. Air India Express Expands Summer Flight Offerings Amid Rising Travel Demand

Air India Express has announced a major expansion of its routes and increased flight frequencies in anticipation of the busy summer travel season ahead. The airline's 2024 summer schedule will see more than 360 daily departures, connecting various business and leisure destinations. Compared to last summer, there has been significant growth in the network, with domestic flights up by over 25% and international flights up by more than 20%. This translates to an additional 55 domestic flights and 19 more international flights, totaling 259 domestic and 109 international departures. The airline aims to boost flight frequencies to international destinations such as Abu Dhabi, Dammam, Jeddah, and Sharjah. It also plans to strengthen its network by increasing both domestic and international frequencies from Ayodhya, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kannur, Kolkata, Kochi, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, and Varanasi, offering passengers a wider range of travel options. This expansion comes at a time when Indian travelers are gearing up for a busy summer of travel, with airfares expected to rise. Reservations for the peak summer season from April to June have surged by 30-40% compared to last year, according to reports. Limited flight availability may further drive up airfares. Other airlines are also gearing up for the summer rush. IndiGo, the country's largest airline, plans to introduce new routes for both domestic and international flights. SpiceJet has completed lease agreements for 10 aircraft to meet the increased demand expected during the summer months. However, Indian carriers are facing challenges, with around 200 planes expected to remain grounded due to engine issues and financial difficulties at struggling airlines. Additionally, flight cancellations may occur if the government does not delay the implementation of new pilot duty hours, scheduled to take effect on June 1st. In other aviation news, FLY91, a new player in India's aviation industry, has commenced its commercial services. The airline is initially operating flights between Goa, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Sindhudurg, with plans to add flights to Agatti, Jalgaon, and Pune in April. They will operate flights between Goa and Bengaluru on Monday, Friday, and Saturday, with a similar schedule for Bengaluru-Sindhudurg routes. Regional airline FLY91 expects to have 350 staff in first year of operations

Regional airline FLY91 expects to have 350 staff in first year of operations Regional airline FLY91, which will commence its commercial flights on March 18, will have around 350 staff at the end of the first year of operations and aims to break even within two years, according to a top executive. The Goa-based airline currently has two ATR 72-600 planes in its fleet and four more aircraft will be added in the first year of operations. The carrier's MD and CEO Manoj Chacko said there is no need to raise funds now, as it will also be getting Viability Gap Funding (VGF) under the regional air connectivity scheme UDAN. ''We also have VGF for the sectors we have won. If we take all the sectors we have secured and if we operate the full schedule, then on an annualised basis, it will be around Rs 200 crore,'' he told PTI in a recent interview. The airline expects to break even in 18-24 months, he said and added that the focus is to build a profitable, sustainable and scalable business. In the inaugural phase, FLY91 will offer weekly flights between Goa's Manohar International Airport and Bengaluru and Hyderabad. It will also provide connectivity between Sindhudurg, in Maharashtra to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Subsequently, the airline will start flights to Agatti, Pune, Jalgaon and Nanded. The services to Agatti in Lakshadweep will commence from April. Currently, the carrier has a staff strength of around 200 and the count will rise to about 350 to 360 by the end of the first year of operations. ''I have got 200 people (now) with 2 aircraft. 4 more aircraft are coming and another 100 people will be added. I have two stations open and another three stations, they will need 50 staff... So, it will be around 350-360 in the first year of operations,'' Chacko noted. He spoke to PTI onboard the airline's ceremonial flight from Goa to Agatti on March 12. According to him, the FLY91 team studied 24 airlines, successful as well as failed ones, to understand the factors that led to their successes and failures. ''We studied 24 airlines, largely India and some examples outside India. At least, 15-16 airlines have gone down in India in the last 20 years... we genuinely studied them to understand why they failed. At the same time, we also studied successful airlines. ''Let us copy what the successful airlines did and let us ensure that we avoid things which failed airlines have been through,'' Chacko, who has also worked with Emirates and the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, said. The airline received its air operator permit from aviation regulator DGCA on March 6.

Maharashtra allies sore over BJPs seat share plan

MUMBAI: After the intervention of Union home minister Amit Shah, the BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra resolved its seat-sharing dispute and tentatively decided on a 36:8:4 formula for upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Going by the formula, the BJP will contest from 36 of the total 48 seats in the state while Eknath Shindes Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawars NCP will enter the fray from eight and four seats, respectively. However, both allies of the BJP articulated their dissatisfaction. Highly placed sources said after addressing poll rallies in Akola, Jalgaon and Sambhaji Nagar, Shah flew to Mumbai on Tuesday night and held discussions with Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Maha dilemma for ruling coalition as Shinde, BJP fail to strike seat-share deal Shinde said he has 13 sitting Lok Sabha members who left Uddhav Thackeray and joined him, so he sought at least 13 seats. Ajit Pawar sought nine seats, said the source requesting anonymity. But Shah told them that multiple survey reports were suggesting otherwise. There is palpable public anger against the allies and very little chance of their candidates emerging victorious. Therefore, it is better for the BJP to contest from more places in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For the BJP, winning as many seats in the Lok Sabha as possible is important. Shah promised them a better deal in the assembly elections, he added.

Shah failed to see dynastic politics in his own party while accusing Oppn of it: Sena (UBT) leader

Shah failed to see dynastic politics in his own party while accusing Oppn of it: Sena (UBT) leader Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve has alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah forgot to notice the dynastic politics in his own party while accusing the INDIA bloc of promoting dynasties. Danve, who is Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council, said on 'X' that Shah did not see the stage of his rally that he addressed at Jalgaon in north Maharashtra on Tuesday, where several leaders of his party, who represented dynastic politics, were present. In his speech at the rally, Shah accused the leaders of Opposition's INDIA grouping of promoting dynasties, and urged the youth to vote for those who strengthen democracy. In his social media post, Danve said, ''Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke a lot about dynastic politics, but forgot to see the stage of his rally. Some of the examples of leaders from the stage that represented dynastic politics: Shobha Fadnavis-Devendra Fadnavis, Gopinath Munde-Pankaja Munde, Shankarrao Chavan-Ashok Chavan, Raosaheb Danve-Santosh Danve.'' Danve named some BJP allies, including Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party, the National People's Party, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal, and said the base of each one of these parties is centred around one family only. In Maharashtra, people showered their love on the Thackeray family, he said. ''For you (BJP), the Thackerays were good till they were with you, but represented dynastic politics when they opposed you! People can see these double standards. This trick won't work in Maharashtra. Keep this in mind,'' Danve said.

Shah holds meeting with Shinde, Ajit Pawar in Mumbai, discusses Lok Sabha polls

Mumbai: Union home minister Amit Shah held a meeting with Maharashtra alliance partners in Mumbai late night on Tuesday. The Maha Yuti comprising BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP is expected to finalise its seat sharing for the Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra after the meeting. Mr. Shah reached Sahyadri government guest house at Malabar Hill at around 10.15pm. Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis of BJP and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who heads the NCP, attended the meeting. The three parties are likely to make formal announcement of their alliance for Lok Sabha on Wednesday. According to reports, the BJP wants to contest more than 30 seats, Shiv Sena wants more than 20 while the NCP has claimed 12 seats out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. However, consensus will be formed after Mr. Shah speaks to Shiv Sena and NCP leaders, a BJP leader said. Mr. Shah is on a two-day tour of Maharashtra. Before coming to Mumbai, he also held meetings and rallies in Akola, Jalgaon and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Addressing BJPs Yuva Sammelan at Jalgaon, the Union home minister said that the 2024 election is crucial for making the country Viksit Bharat by 2047. He also ridiculed INDIA bloc leaders and said that they have come together to secure future of their sons, daughters and nephews. Leaders of INDIA bloc parties have limited objective to promote their individual son, daughters political career. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi wants to make Rahul Gandhi the next PM. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray wants to make son Aaditya Thackeray as the next CM. NCPs Sharad Pawar is keen to make his daughter Supriya Sule the next CM. M.K. Stalin of DMK wants his son as the next CM. Trinamool Congress CM Mamata Banerjee is working to see nephew (Abhijit Banerjee) as her successor. How can INDIA whose leaders are serving vested interests safeguard democracy and national interest? Those who are so tied up with familys vested interests cannot uphold democracy. Whereas, Modis leadership which is relentlessly striving for the well-being and future of 130 crore people of India will alone ensure that democracy thrives and gets stronger, Mr. Shah said. Taking a dig at Congress leader Rahul, Mr Shah said that Rahulyaan has failed to take off 19 times and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections would be the 20th launch. Vote for the BJP means a vote for Bharat and making Narendra Modi Prime Minister for the third time, he said.

Amit Shah's Maharashtra Visit: Focus on Seat-Sharing and Candidate Finalization

Mumbai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah's two-day visit to Maharashtra is anticipated to focus on discussions regarding a seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, as well as the finalization of candidates. Beginning today, Shah's itinerary includes engagements across various regions of the state. On the first day, Amit Shah will visit Sambhajinagar in the Marathwada region, an area central to the Maratha reservation issue. Here, he will conduct a roadshow and address a public meeting, particularly significant as Sambhajinagar has been a stronghold of the Shiv Sena for over two decades. However, the seat was won by the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM in the previous election due to vote splitting. Both the Shiv Sena and BJP are vying for the seat in the upcoming polls. Marathwada, comprising eight districts and eight Lok Sabha seats, holds strategic importance for both the BJP and Shiv Sena, given their current distribution of seats in the region. In Akola, Shah will engage in meetings with local leaders and host a roadshow, focusing on the Vidarbha region, which encompasses 11 districts and 10 Lok Sabha seats. The BJP and Shiv Sena share dominance in this region. Further, in Jalgaon, Amit Shah is scheduled to attend the Yuva Sammelan, expecting substantial attendance from the local populace. On the second day of his visit, the Union Home Minister will participate in the Indian Global Forum (IGF) yearly investment summit at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. Shah's visit assumes significance amidst ongoing discussions regarding the allocation of Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. Notably, when the BJP announced its initial list of 195 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls on March 2, no candidates were named for Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar plans to conduct a review of nearly 16 Lok Sabha seats during Amit Shah's visit. The review meeting, to be attended by senior party leaders and office bearers, reflects the NCP's efforts to strategize effectively in light of the impending elections.
