LS polls: Battleground Bihar

PATNA: The five Bihar seats going to polls in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls on May 20 will witness new candidates on four seats, and a turncoat trying his luck from the remaining one. In Hajipur (SC) and Saran, RJD chief Lalu Prasads daughter Rohini Acharya and Ram Vilas Paswans son Chirag Paswan face the challenges of protecting their fathers pocket boroughs, respectively. Altogether 80 candidates, including 35 Independents, are in the fray, with three contestants being doctors. In high-profile seat Saran, Rohini Acharya is pitted against BJP MP and former Union minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Acharya, who hit the headlines for donating one of her kidneys to her father RJD chief and former chief minister Lalu Prasad, is making her debut in electoral politics. Saran is considered the home ground of Lalu Prasad, who had represented the seat four times before being disqualified after his conviction in cases linked to multi-crore fodder scam in 2013. In 2009, Lalu won after defeating Rudy. In 2014 polls, Rudy emerged victorious after defeating Rohinis mother and former chief minister Rabri Devi. In 2019, Rudy retained the seat by defeating Chandrika Rai, father in-law of Lalus eldest son Tej Pratap and also an influential leader of Yadavs in the region. Saran has an almost equal number of backward Yadav and upper caste Rajput voters. While Yadavs favour RJD candidate, Rajputs vote by and large to BJP candidate. Rudy, however, claimed that his real fight was with Rohinis father Lalu, who is in the fray from behind the scene. In Hajipur (SC) seat, there is a direct contest between Chirag Paswan, chief of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and Shiv Chandra Ram of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). For Chirag, it is more important to win election as Hajipur has been karmabhoomi of his father late Ram Vilas Paswan. Senior Paswan had represented the seat eight times before being nominated to the Rajya Sabha. In 2019, Chirags uncle and Ram Vilas younger brother Pashupati Kumar Paras had won by defeating Shiv Chandra Ram of RJD. This time, Chirag decided to contest from Hajipur and fielded his brother in-law Arun Bharti from Jamui from where he was elected in 2014 and 2019. Shiv Chandra, a former state minister, is confident of his victory as Chirag may fall victim of bhitarghat (internal conflict) due to strained relationship with his uncle. Paras, MP from Hajipur, was denied ticket and seat was allotted to Chirags party under seat-sharing arrangements among NDA constituents. Chiv Chandra is also popular among Ravidas community against whom Chirag had made some adverse comments. There is resentment among members of Ravidas community over Chirags remarks, said Pankaj Ram, a resident of Rajapakar in Vaishali district. From Sitamarhi, JD(U) MP Sunil Kumar Pintoo was dropped in favour of Devesh Chandra Thakur, a close confidante of chief minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar. Devesh, chairman of Bihar Legislative Council, is contesting election for the first time. He is pitted against former MP and RJD leader Arun Rai. In Madhubani, BJPs Ashok Yadav had won 2019 election by defeating Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) candidate Bardi Kumar Purbey. But this time, INDIA bloc changed its candidate and fielded former Union minister and influential RJD leader Md Ali Ashraf Fatmi, who had earlier unsuccessfully contested Ashoks father and four-time MP Hukumdeo Narayan Yadav. In Muzaffarpur, the contest is between Dr Raj Bhushan Choudhary of BJP and Ajay Kumar Nishad of Congress (read INDIA bloc). Ajay had won in 2019 on BJP ticket but but was denied ticket this time. He joined Congress, which fielded him from Muzaffarpur. Ajay Nishad, a turncoat, was rewarded with ticket by grand old party. While Ajay switched to Congress, Dr Raj Bhushan, who had fought from the seat on VIP ticket in 2019, joined BJP and was subsequently fielded.

Vaishali: Bahubalis hold sway in cradle of democracy

PATNA: Vaishali Lok Sabha constituency, considered the cradle of democracy, is set to witness an electoral battle between a Bahubali (strongman) and wife of a JD (U) MLC known for his muscle power in north Bihar. The seat will go to polls in the sixth phase on May 25. LJP (Ram Vilas) has fielded incumbent MP Veena Devi, wife of JD (U) MLC Dinesh Singh, and RJD has pinned hopes on the muscle power of former MLA Vijay Kumar Shukla alias Munna Shukla. His brother Chotan Shukla was an influential leader of Bihar Peoples Party led by former MP Anand Mohan Singh. Veena is Rajput and Shukla Bhumihar, both politically dominant castes. Veena is facing anti-incumbency and Shukla is using lack of development as a poll issue. The MP is relying on PM Modis popularity and Centres development works. Development is no issue. Caste is the only factor that matters in Vaishali, said Bibhuti Pandey of Bahilwara village in Paroo assembly segment. Bipul Kumar, who runs a grocery shop on Turki-Saraiya road, said he had never seen Veena Devi after she was elected. In 2019, she won due to Modi wave. But this time, she is pitted against a formidable candidate, Kumar added. Murari Pandey claimed that the RJD candidate has a fair chance of getting elected. He is very popular among all castes due to his accessibility while the MP has never visited the constituency after she won the election, he said. Veena had defeated RJD veteran Raghuvansh Prasad Singh in 2019. In 2014, LJPs Rama Kishore Singh, another muscleman, had defeated Raghuvansh, who died in 2020. Raghuvansh, who served as a minister in the Manmohan Singh government, had won from the seat in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009. People used to call him Barham Baba for being easily available. Musclemen or their spouses had tried their luck from Vaishali, believed to be the first republic in the world, in the past too. This seat has also sent women candidates to Lok Sabha many times. Kishori Sinha, wife of former CM Satyendra Narayan Sinha, had represented the seat in 1980 and 1984, and Usha Sinha in 1989. Lovely Anand, wife of muscleman Anand Mohan, had represented the seat after a 1994 bypoll. Veena was comfortably placed in Vaishali constituency until RJD fielded Shukla. Now, it depends how much Shukla will cut into Bhumihar votes (BJPs traditional vote bank) and whether a section of Yadavs vote in favour of NDA candidate under the influence of Modis popularity. Arun Kumar Singh, a retired political science professor of BRA Bihar University in Muzaffarpur, claimed that RJD candidate Shukla would not be able to make a dent into Bhumihar votes as there was an undercurrent in favour of Modi. He said RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav is not a factor in Lok Sabha election as the huge crowds at his public meetings could be due to several other reasons, including a candidates own personal efforts. Tejashwi will be considered only in the assembly election, he added. Political analyst Mahant Rajiv Ranjan Das said a section of Yadavs might vote in favour of NDA candidate as they did it in Lok Sabha elections in the past too. There could also be consolidation of Rajput votes in favour of NDA candidate in case there is any division of Bhumihar votes, Das said.

PM Modi converts roadshow into Varanasi carnival

LUCKNOW/MUZAFFARPUR: It all appeared more of a carnival than a roadshow of a politician. On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modis nomination for Lok Sabha election in Varanasi, the city was opulently embellished. As the PM took out a 5-km roadshow, which is expected to have a fallout in many eastern UP constituencies, the focus of the election has clearly shifted from western UP to Purvanchal, passing through the central region after four-phase voting on Monday. Commencing from the BHU crossing, the PMs caravan hit Kashis streets even as the scorching sun showed no signs of mellowing. It culminated at Kashi Vishwanath temple around 8pm. The PM was flanked by CM Yogi Adityanath atop a four-wheeler painted in saffron. As the evening descended, people lined-up on both sides of the roads as the Modi Rath inched on. The chariot was showered with flower petals and amid chants of Har Har Mahadev and Jai Shree Ram. The over 3-hour roadshow began with the beating of damrus, blowing of conch shells, and chanting of mantras. It reverberated with the sound of shehnai played on by the family members of Ustad Bismillah Khan, the recipient of Bharat Ratna. Youths dressed as Lord Shiva also stood along the route while the crowd was continuously chanting Har Har Mahadev. The roadshow followed the route that is said to have been taken by Aadi Shankaracharya 1,200 years ago. Earlier in the day, the PM launched a broadside against the opposition INDIA bloc, calling its leaders cowards who were scared of Pakistans nuclear power. Addressing a rally in Muzaffarpur, the PM said: If Pakistan is not wearing bangles, we will make them wear bangles. They (Pakistan) do not have flour, they do not have electricity, now I have come to know that they even have scarcity of bangles. We must look carefully at the opposition, which is full of cowards and timid people, who give a clean chit to Pakistan on terrorism, he remarked.

PM Modi Slams Opposition, Accuses INDIA Bloc in Bihar Rally

New Delhi/Muzaffarpur/Hajipur/Saran (Bihar) : Reminding Bihar of the jungle raj during the earlier RJD rule in the state and a huge legacy of crime and atrocities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lashed out at the Opposition INDIA bloc, calling its leaders cowards who were scared of Pakistan's nuclear power, about recent statements by INDIA bloc leaders. Mr Modi addressed three back-to-back rallies in Bihar's Hajipur, Muzaffarpur, and Saran Lok Sabha constituencies. He also recalled the scars of Naxalism faced by Bihar for decades and claimed that previous governments had fostered and exploited Naxalism against its people. Mr Modi, who later held a roadshow in his parliamentary seat in UPs Varanasi, from where he will be filing his nomination on Tuesday, also visited the Patna Sahib gurdwara and performed seva there and served langar. The PM was offered a samman patra from the gurdwara committee and a portrait of Mata Gujri, whom the PM hailed as a beacon of courage and sacrifice. The INDIA bloc seems to have leaders who are scared of Pakistan and have nightmares about its nuclear power If Pakistan does not wear bangles, we will make the country wear these. I knew they did not have food grains. Now, I come to know they do not even have an adequate supply of bangles, said the PM, whose remarks came in the backdrop of comments by National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah about Pakistan having atom bombs and not wearing bangles. But, we must look carefully at the Opposition which seems to be full of cowards and timid people, who give a clean chit to Pakistan on terrorism, raise doubts on surgical strikes their Left allies even want our nuclear arsenal to be dismantled, he said. Maintaining that the INDIA bloc had worked out a formula, which would allow five of its leaders, if the coalition came to power, to enjoy a year of premiership each, Mr. Modi said: Just imagine what type of a mess we would get to see if the bloc's plan to have a different PM, every year, for five years, succeeds. However, they are a motley group that is bound to fail. He asserted that the ongoing elections were for having a government that would give a further boost to the standing and clout enjoyed by the country. Asserting that money recovered in raids against politicians belonged to the countrys poor, the PM said: I will tell you why they are crying hoarse against the action of agencies like the ED. During the previous Congress regime, the ED seized only Rs 35 lakhs, which could be contained in a school bag. Ever since we took over, the agency has recovered Rs 2,200 crores, which would require 70 small trucks to be carried. The Prime Minister said unlike his opponents, who were concerned about promoting their offspring, I have no waaris (successor). The common people are my waaris. He reiterated the charge that parties like the Congress and the RJD will give away reservations to Muslims to pursue their vote bank politics, but added that as long as I am alive, I will not let this happen. Kidnapping and extortion flourished during RJD rule in Bihar the NDA fights for social justice, 60 per cent Union ministers from OBC/SC/ST categories, he asserted. It has been several days since I challenged the Congress-led Opposition to give it in writing that it will not give reservations on religious lines. They are yet to respond, Mr Modi said. The PM also alleged that the Opposition had plans to impose an inheritance tax but Modi would stand like a wall in their way, thwarting attempts to rob people of their wealth. He accused the Opposition parties of deliberately hurting people's sentiments by making obnoxious statements about the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Targeting RJD leaders Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son and heir apparent Tejashwi Yadav, mentioning neither by name, Mr. Modi referred to the fodder scam, the land for jobs scam and attempts to take credit for work done by our ally (chief minister and JD-U president) Nitish Kumar. Speaking on a day when the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections was underway, he urged the people to turn out in large numbers and vote for the NDA to enable the formation of a strong government. In his speech, Mr. Modi also touched upon his government's track record on development, citing the construction of highways at a rapid rate and underscoring commitment to social justice and empowerment, while accusing the Opposition of trying to put hurdles in the way of measures like women's reservations.

PM Modi Alleges INDIA Alliance Undermining National Interests

In Bihar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized leaders of the INDIA bloc for their recent comments, suggesting that they had taken money to speak against India. He specifically mentioned remarks made by Farooq Abdullah, Mani Shankar Aiyar, and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, implying that they were undermining India's interests. Speaking at a rally in Muzaffarpur, PM Modi expressed concerns about the opposition, stating, These individuals seem so fearful that they envision Pakistan's threats even in their sleep. Can such leaders govern our nation effectively? They make remarks like, 'Pakistan hasn't worn bangles, we will make them wear it.' They lack basic necessities like electricity, and now we're unsure if they even have bangles. Some are absolving the accused of the 26/11 attacks, questioning surgical and air strikes, and aiming to weaken our nuclear capabilities. It appears as if the INDIA alliance is working against India's interests. Can we trust them to make decisions for our country? Without naming Abdullah, PM Modi highlighted Pakistan's economic challenges, emphasizing the favorable momentum for the BJP and NDA in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. He remarked, As the fourth phase of elections proceeds, there's a strong wave in favor of BJP and NDA. Everywhere I go, I hear the same chant, 'Once Again, Modi Government.' This election determines our future, and our nation doesn't desire an ineffectual and unstable government like Congress. PM Modi also addressed the long-standing issue of naxalism in Bihar, noting the suffering endured by the people of Muzaffarpur and Bihar. He attributed past governance to nurturing naxalism and its adverse impact on Bihar's industries and businesses. The Prime Minister criticized the previous Jungle Raj led by RJD, asserting that it regressed Bihar significantly. He credited the NDA government for restoring law and order and reducing naxalism in the state. PM Modi highlighted the reduction in the cost of LED bulbs during his tenure compared to the Congress regime. He introduced schemes like the PM Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme, aiming to alleviate electricity expenses for households by providing subsidies for solar panel installations. Previously, Congress' Mani Shankar Aiyar had sparked controversy with his remarks on Pakistan's nuclear capabilities, while Telangana Chief Minister Revnath Reddy questioned the Pulwama terror attack and retaliatory airstrikes. The ongoing Lok Sabha polls in Bihar, covering 40 seats in seven phases, witnessed BJP-led NDA's dominance in the 2019 elections, winning 39 out of 40 seats. The opposition Mahagathbandhan, comprising RJD, Congress, and Left parties, announced RJD's candidacy for 26 seats, while BJP and JD(U) are contesting on 17 and 16 seats, respectively. 'Baap Dada Ki Kamai Khanewale': PM takes jibe at Tejashwi Yadav during Bihar election rally

HAJIPUR (BIHAR): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a blistering attack on RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav for his allegation against him on employment by commenting that those dependent on their fathers wealth were unaware of employment and job creation. Addressing an election rally at Kutubpur in Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency from where LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan is contesting election, Modi sought to hit hard on former deputy chief minister Tejashwi for his repeated accusations against his government on the issue of employment. Baap Dada Ki Kamai Khane Wale Ko Rozgar Ka Pata Nahin, he remarked. Tejashwi who is trying hard to brighten electoral prospects of both RJD and the opposition INDIA bloc in the election, claims how he succeeded in providing five lakh government jobs to youths when his party was in power for 17 months last time. His party's election manifesto also promises one crore jobs if INDIA forms the government at the centre. Modi said that the country's economy was growing fast, creating jobs in various sectors like railway, road, fertilizer and thermal power and various infrastructure projects. Alleging that RJD would abolish women's reservation in Lok Sabha and state assemblies if INDIA was voted to power, the PM said that his government ensured for 33 percent reservation for women under the bill. He, while obliquely referring to the past instances of RJD MPs tearing copies of the bill in the Parliament, said that RJD and Congress and RJD could only increase migration from the state. How could Centre determine Hindu, Muslim population without even conducting Census: Tejashwi Yadav While referring to Enforcement Directorate (ED) seizing heaps of currency notes from the houses of leaders, PM Modi said that the central agency had seized Rs 22000 crore from the premises of corrupt people which would require 70 small trucks to be carried. On the other hand, the agency had seized only Rs 35 lakh when the UPA was in power at the centre, he added. Modi vowed to continue with his governments crackdown on corruption, notwithstanding allegations of misuse of central agencies against the Opposition. He said the money recovered in raids belonged to the countrys poor. Referring to Opposition leaders allegations that PM Modi had no waaris (successor), he said that they were promoting their offspring but 'I have no waaris' to promote. The common people are my waaris, he told the gathering. Patna Enchanted by Modi's Unprecedented Roadshow, Setting a New Milestone for Bihar's Capital

Patna Enchanted by Modi's Unprecedented Roadshow, Setting a New Milestone for Bihar's Capital The capital of Bihar stood in thrall to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday when the charismatic leader held a spectacular roadshow in Patna in the thick of Lok Sabha elections. A distance of about a kilometre and a half was covered by the prime minister, who stood atop a vehicle painted in the hue of saffron and bedecked with flowers and images of the leader and cutouts of the lotus, the BJPs poll symbol. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose JD(U) is an NDA partner, Deputy CM and state BJP president Samrat Choudhary and local MP Ravi Shankar Prasad were perched beside Modi as he waved at the euphoric crowds shrieking with joy from beyond iron barricades put up by security personnel. The BJP, which depends heavily on the prime ministers persona in elections, had demonstrably worked hard to make The Modi Show, the name given to the Patna event, a grand success. The vehicle, on which the leader stood, followed a swarm of women supporters, dressed in saffron saris with turbans of the same shade on their heads, besides badges inscribed with the lotus pinned on their dresses. Known for his ability to strike a rapport with the common people, Modi waved at the citizens, many of them standing on balconies or beside windows of their houses, which were decorated with mini bulbs and flowers to welcome the leader. On the streets, many bystanders furiously clicked on their mobile phones to capture the momentous occasion, while others stood waving placards and banners with slogans in praise of the PM. Modi, who became the first prime minister to have held a roadshow anywhere in Bihar, charmed the citizens with his humility when he bowed down with folded hands to greet groups of priests who stood on either side of the road, performing an aarati in the honour of the devout leader. The PM arrived here in the evening, after a day of gruelling poll campaign in the adjoining state of West Bengal, and was greeted at the airport by leaders like Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha, assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav and the BJPs state general secretary in charge Bhikhu Bhai Dalsania. The PM drove straight to Bhattacharjee Road, the point of commencement of the roadshow which concluded at Udyog Bhavan, a stones throw from the historic Gandhi Maidan where Modi delivered his famous maiden speech in Bihar more than eight years ago, unfazed by bombs going off at the venue. Chants of mantras and blowing of conch shells reverberated through the landscape as the PM climbed atop the vehicle, which party supporters called a rath, a veritable chariot that would propel the BJP-led NDA towards electoral victory. People from various faiths seemed to have come out on the streets to welcome the PM, with many burqa-clad women spotted among the citizens, joining the chorus of Jai Shri Ram. Many onlookers also flashed their phone lights, obviously drawing inspiration from rallies of Modi where he has been known to make people do the same by way of showing solidarity. The roadshow, just a day ahead of third phase of voting, marks yet another episode in the PMs intensive campaign in the state, where he has so far addressed seven election rallies. After retiring for the night at the Raj Bhavan, Modi is scheduled to pay a visit to the famous Sikh shrine Takht Harmandir Patna Sahib before addressing rallies in Hajipur, Muzaffarpur and Saran, which go to polls in the subsequent phase.

Modi to Embark on Two-Day Bihar Itinerary, Including Roadshow and Three Public Rallies

Modi to Embark on Two-Day Bihar Itinerary, Including Roadshow and Three Public Rallies Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a roadshow in Patna on Sunday evening, followed by three election rallies elsewhere in Bihar, a day later. This is the first political visit to the state capital by the prime minister since the March 2009 rally at the historic Gandhi Maidan. He was on an official visit here a couple of years ago for a function held by the Bihar Assembly. Foolproof security arrangements are in place across the city. There will be a complete ban on flying drones in any locality and plying of vehicles will remain suspended on the roadshow route, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajeev Mishra told PTI. The roadshow will commence at the Income Tax office roundabout, situated a few hundred metres from the state BJP headquarters, and conclude at Udyog Bhavan in the vicinity of Gandhi Maidan, passing through crowded localities like Fraser Road, Exhibition Road, Kadam Kuan and Sahitya Sammelan. Barricades have been erected on both sides of the road along the route and commercial establishments, which are aplenty in the area, are likely to remain closed, even as the SSP said forces would be deployed on rooftops of many buildings to keep a tight vigil. The BJP is predictably enthused by the prime ministers blitzkrieg that comes just a day ahead of the fourth phase of polling elsewhere in the state, with three more still to go. Posters and billboards urging the people to turn up for The Modi Show have been put up at various points. The people of the city are known for their immense affection for the prime minister. We request them to welcome Modi, the first PM to hold a roadshow in Bihar, by decorating their houses with flowers, said Ravi Shankar Prasad, a former Union minister and the local BJP MP, seeking re-election from Patna Sahib seat. Prasad also hit the streets late Saturday evening, along with Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and state BJP president Samrat Choudhary, among others, to take stock of the preparedness for the roadshow. Ram Kripal Yadav, who represents the adjoining constituency of Patliputra, covering rural Patna, said, I may be the MP of Patliputra but I am a voter of Patna Sahib. The prime ministers visit to the city is a matter of pride for me. After the roadshow, the Prime Minister is scheduled to retire for the night at the Raj Bhavan. On Monday, he is scheduled to visit Takht Harmandir, the famous Sikh shrine situated in the old city area, where Guru Gobind Singh was born and spent his childhood. He will, thereafter, hit the campaign trail and address election rallies in Hajipur, where BJP ally Chirag Paswan is in the fray, besides Muzaffarpur and Saran, which is witnessing a heated contest between saffron party veteran Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD president Lalu Prasad. Modi has already held as many as seven election rallies in the state where the total number of Lok Sabha seats is 40.

Patna Suffers from Alarming Air Pollution Levels

Patna Suffers from Alarming Air Pollution Levels Patna was the second most polluted city in India on Sunday, recording an air quality index (AQI) of 316, which is classified as 'very poor'. Other cities in the state that recorded 'poor' AQI are Siwan (282), Muzaffarpur (233), Hajipur (232) and Bettiah (221). Greater Noida in UP was the most polluted city in the country with an AQI of 346, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) bulletin at 4 pm. 'Very poor' air quality causes respiratory illness on prolonged exposure, according to the CPCB. AQI is an assessment of air quality that takes into account pollutants, including PM 2.5 -- particulate matter less than 2.5 microns, and PM 10. Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) chairman Devendra Kumar Shukla told PTI, ''It is true that the air quality has deteriorated in certain cities of the state. It is because of low wind speed, ongoing construction activities without following pollution control measures and recent fire incidents in Patna and surrounding areas.'' He said civic bodies will have to start sprinkling water to check the deteriorating AQI in the state capital. ''Rain will certainly bring some immediate relief. The BSPCB will soon intensify its drive to check deteriorating AQI levels in certain cities of the state,'' he added.

Court Dismisses Anticipatory Bail Request of RJD LS Candidate Vijay Kumar Shukla in Land Seizure Case

Court Dismisses Anticipatory Bail Request of RJD LS Candidate Vijay Kumar Shukla in Land Seizure Case A court in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district has dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Vijay Kumar Shukla alias Munna Shukla, the RJD candidate from Vaishali Lok Sabha seat, in a case of alleged land grab. Shukla had moved the anticipatory bail petition on April 3 in the case wherein his wife Annu Shukla, a former MLA from Lalganj, is also an accused along with three others. A case of alleged land grab was registered against Shukla, also a former JD(U) MLA, and others by the Sadar police station (Muzaffarpur) in August 2023, following a directive by a local court. The court had issued the directive on the basis of a complaint filed by an aggrieved party. It was alleged in the complaint that the accused grabbed the land on the National Highway connecting Muzaffarpur and Hajipur on the basis of forged documents. Talking to PTI, Sushil Kumar, lawyer of Shukla, said, ''The anticipatory bail plea of my client in the case was rejected by the court of Additional District Judge-5 (Muzaffarpur) after hearing on the matter on Friday. We will challenge this order in the competent court.'' Shukla, who recently joined RJD and is contesting Lok Sabha polls from Vaishali as the nominee of the 'Grand Alliance', told PTI on Sunday, ''The case against me is a conspiracy to malign my image. I have full faith in the judiciary. I will challenge this order of the court before the high court.'' Shukla is pitted against Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas)'s Veena Devi. The Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is an alliance partner of the NDA in Bihar. Vaishali along with Valmiki Nagar, Paschim Champaran, Purvi Champaran, Sheohar, Gopalganj, Siwan and Maharajganj will go for polls on May 25.

Lok Sabha election: Katihar set to witness direct fight between Congress, JDU; people to vote for all-round development

Lok Sabha election: Katihar set to witness direct fight between Congress, JDU; people to vote for all-round development The Katihar Lok Sabha seat is all set to go to polls on Friday along with four other seats -- Kishanganj, Purnia, Bhagalpur and Banka -- in Bihar with the Congress and the JDU locking horns in the constituency. Under the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) seat sharing arrangement in the State, of a total 40 parliamentary seats, Congress will contest on nine while alliance partner Rashtriya Janata Dal on 26 and three Left parties on five seats. Congress has fielded senior party leader Tariq Anwar from the seat while the JD (U), a party that is part of NDA has re-nominated Dulal Chand Goswami. Under the Mahagathbandhan coalition, the Congress in Bihar is contesting on nine seats: Kishanganj, Katihar, Bhagalpur, West Champaran, Samastipur (reserved), Muzaffarpur, Sasaram (reserved), Maharajganj, and Patna Sahib. There are six assembly segments in Katihar in which the Congress and BJP won two each and the JDU and CPI (ML) won one seat each. The CPI (ML) is part of the opposition INDIA bloc and the Congress is banking on its support to reclaim Katihar. In 2019, JDU leader Dulal Chandra Goswami won the Katihar seat for the first time, defeating the Congress veteran Tariq Anwar, who had won the seat five times in the past. The Congress has not won this seat since 1999. In 2014, Anwar won this seat on an NCP ticket. The BJP has won the seat thrice from 1999 to 2009. Meanwhile, as the political parties in the fray have centred their canvassing around issues that directly impact the lives of the poor and issues of basic needs, all round development of the region has emerged as a major concern for the people of Katihar and they are looking for a candidate who will work for their welfare. In Katihar, there is anger against the sitting MP, Dulal Chandra Goswami, even as a group of voters said they would be voting for PM Modi. A local resident said that the people of Katihar are struggling to fulfil their basic needs. There are several schemes including Pradhanmantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana which have not been implemented at the ground level and we want an MP who will implement these initiatives of the Centre. Today's youths are addicted to narcotic drugs. The government should take strict action against narcotic drugs. There are several rehab centres which indicate that there is rampant drug addiction in the whole Seemanchal area of Bihar, he said. He said there is no facility of pay the electricity bill in Katihar as its counter has been shifted to Barnasia. There are over 50,000 customers and most of them do not use online-payment method. People do faces challenges to pay their bills. There is lack of basic facilities, such as road, electricity and education. We are struggling with all these. For health, they have built a 100-bedded hospital but there is lack of doctors. Why the doctors in the government are not turning up? he added. Ravi Kumar, another resident of Katihar said that the region needs an MP with a vision for next 25 years. We need an MP with a vision for next 25 years. We need a young representative and no party has fielded any such candidate, he said. Kumar, while listing the issues being faced by the people there said that Katihar, since independence has been failing to elect an MP who can think about all round development of the constituency. We do not face only one problem but the whole Katihar is trapped with the problems. We could not get a single MP from Katihar since the independence who thought about the all road development of Katihar. People do not get food by building TV towers. They boast of works done in the railway sector. There is nothing to boast about this as footfall at the Katihar station is so high that the development at the railway stations are needed, he said. Anil Kumar Gupta also expressed similar sentiments and said that the MPs go missing after elections. He, however, expressed his hope for a change of representative. No development has been done in whole Bihar. Our sugar mill is closed for years; nobody gives any attention to that. Electricity is also huge problem for people. The MP is on road now a day, but goes missing after elections. Most of the people even do not know the name of our MP. I need change for development like other states, he added. Meanwhile, another local, Abhishek Kumar said that after all the odds against the JD(U) candidate, he will vote for him as he wants Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assume the office for the third time. Development has been done but not to the extent which is needed for the constituency. The road and over-bridges have been built, but it was all because of the Centre. I am BJP supporter and will vote for it, but I am not happy with the JD(U) candidate due to his works done in the last five years. I will vote in the name of Modi, Kumar added. (ANI)

Modi govt gave Bihar raw deal: Cong

Modi govt gave Bihar raw deal: Cong The Congress attacked the Modi government on Tuesday over key issues of Bihar, and asked why has the state not been granted special category status as promised. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh hit out at the prime minister ahead of his poll rallies in Bihar. ''Today's questions for PM Modi as he heads to Bihar: Why hasn't Bihar been granted Special Category Status as the PM had promised?'' Ramesh said on X. When will the Modi government address the flooding of the Kosi river and what happened to the airports that the PM promised, he asked. ''Jumla details below: After 10 years in power at the Centre, and 15 years in power in Bihar, why has the Modi Sarkar failed to deliver Special Category Status in the state? As per the Centre's own Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Report, Bihar ranked as the poorest state in India, and 52% of the state's population lacks access to requisite health, education and living standards,'' Ramesh said. In 2013, the Raghuram Rajan Committee recommended a new methodology for devolving funds that is based on a multi-dimensional index instead of SCS to account for a state's economic backwardness, he pointed out. ''In 2014, when campaigning for his current position, Mr. Modi effectively promised special state status for Bihar. Ten years later, what is the Modi Sarkar waiting for? Why has the PM forgotten the people of Bihar?'' he said. Noting that every monsoon, the Kosi river floods its banks, completely devastating the surrounding area, Ramesh said millions of people are affected by the Kosi's flooding - standing crops are regularly ruined and families are displaced for months on end. ''The double-engine sarkar builds and rebuilds embankments, only for them to be inevitably washed away during the next flood. Residents have likened this to the 'goose that lays the golden eggs' -- popular sentiment holds that the BJP's favoured contractors are receiving kickbacks each time an embankment is rebuilt,'' he alleged. ''Apart from this, the BJP government loves to blame upstream Nepal for opening the barrage gates, without making any diplomatic efforts to find a solution. Why is the Modi Sarkar ignoring the plight of millions of flood victims?'' he said. Has the misery of people in Mithilanchal and Kosi become another opportunity for the BJP's monetary gain, Ramesh asked. ''PM Modi promised an airport in Purnia on 18th August, 2015. Six years and three Nitish Kumar U-turns later, his government is yet to fulfil the promise. In Muzaffarpur, the Modi Sarkar promised a fully operational airport by Diwali 2023. Today, not a single flight lands in the airport. In Bhagalpur, the Administration has barely started the process to set up a commercially viable airport - after years of empty promises from the BJP and JDU,'' he said. For a Government that claims to have focused on infrastructure development, why has the Modi government given Bihar such a poor deal, Ramesh asked. ''Why have these three airport projects been neglected for the last ten years?'' Ramesh said and asked the PM to break his ''silence'' on these issues.

Encephalitis: Chamki fever cases increase again in hospitals, children are most affected; Know how to stay safe

Every year a large number of children are admitted to hospitals due to encephalitis, due to which the risk of death is also seen to be high. The government is continuously running a campaign to prevent this dangerous disease, although it remains a big threat. According to recent media reports, cases of Chamki fever are once again increasing in some districts of Bihar. In Muzaffarpur, about 14 people have been admitted to the hospital after showing symptoms of Chamki fever, although the test reports of the patients are still awaited. According to reports, 7 children each were admitted to the hospital in the PICU of Muzaffarpur on both Saturday and Sunday. The team of doctors is continuously monitoring the children. A blood sample has been sent for testing, the report is awaited. Health experts have advised all people to continue taking measures to prevent fever. Let us know what are the causes of Chamki fever and how can children be kept safe from it. Cases are being seen in Uttar Pradesh- Bihar Many states of Bihar have been victims of this serious disease Muzaffarpur is one of them. For the last several years, cases of encephalitis in many states including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have been a cause of great concern for health experts. Cases of encephalitis can be caused by both bacterial and viral infections. Due to this, the risk of brain inflammation increases which can also have serious side effects. Although this disease can occur at any age, children have been seen to be its biggest victims. What are the causes of encephalitis? The problem of encephalitis can occur due to viral-bacterial infection, autoimmune inflammation, insect bites, or some types of diseases, in which there is swelling in the brain. About 70% of encephalitis cases are caused by viral infection, with young children (one year of age and younger) and the elderly (65 years of age and older) being most at risk. In case of an encounter with the virus, there may be a problem of swelling in the brain. The symptoms of this disease worsen with time and in some situations, it can even be fatal. What are its symptoms? Encephalitis usually starts with symptoms like fever and headache. If this problem is not noticed or treated in time, it can lead to seizures, confusion, loss of consciousness, and even coma. Its symptoms become severe with time. In these conditions, severe headaches, vomiting, confusion, memory problems, difficulty in speaking and hearing, and unconsciousness can occur. Health experts say that everyone needs to remain vigilant to prevent encephalitis. Especially in cities where cases have already been reported, there is a need for everyone to take special precautions regarding the health of children. What to do to prevent encephalitis? Health experts say the best way to prevent viral encephalitis is to avoid contact with viruses that can cause the disease. For this, it is most important to take care of cleanliness. Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. Do not share clothes and bedding. There is a risk of getting this disease due to the bite of some infected mosquitoes, hence it is important to take special care of the cleanliness of the surroundings. If you or your child is showing symptoms of this disease, go to the hospital immediately. (PC: ISTOCK)

Bihar: Tejashwis parivartan patra promises five new airports, jobs

PATNA : Toeing the line of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which is a part of the Opposition INDIA bloc, promised in its election manifesto on Saturday to provide 200 units of electricity free of cost to the poor and farmers of Bihar. They stated that a separate commission would be established to investigate the increasing rates of electricity. Releasing the partys election manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav also announced plans to provide one crore jobs and Rs 1 lakh to economically weak women every year on the occasion of Rakshabandhan. These airports are essential for the states economic advancement, tourism, and youth facilities. Additionally, the RJD leader promised to abolish the Agniveer scheme launched by the Narendra Modi government at the centre. The manifesto, called Parivartan Patra, pledged to accord special status to Bihar and offer special packages for all-round development. The election manifesto outlined 24 promises with a focus on generating employment and enhancing the economic independence of the poor. Bihar: Whats common between INDIA & NDA? The rebels

PATNA : In the emerging battle between the opposition Grand Alliance and the ruling NDA, a threat common to both sides is looming: rebels. From the RJD-led front, which is yet to announce its full list of candidates, two dissidents have already gone their ways. First is MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, and second Rajballabh Yadav. In the NDA camp, BJP MP from Muzaffarpur Ajay Nishad has resigned from the party and joined Congress. The buzz is that Congress may field him from Muzaffarpur. Another party MP from Buxar and Union minister Ashwini Choubey is questioning the leadership why he is replaced. I want to know the offence that I have committed for which I have not been given the ticket from Buxar, he said on Monday. Pappu Yadav raises banner of revolt as grand alliance list to be out today Bihar will have seven-phase polls. Jamui, Nawada, Gaya and Aurangabad are going to the polls in the first phase. While Pappu is a serious threat to the GAs official candidate Bima Bharti in Purnea, RJD rebel Vinod Yadav is also adding to the headache of the RJDs official candidate Shravan Kumar in Nawada. Pappu is likely to cut into not only the Yadav and other castes votes but also a substantial number of Muslim votes in Purnea. Pappu has not withdrawn despite warnings by the Congress leadership. So, RJD candidate Bharti faces a tough battle. JD(U) candidate and MP Santosh Kushwaha appears to have an edge in the given situation. Purnea goes to the polls in the second phase on April 26. Similarly, RJD official candidate Shravan Kushwaha is grappling with the challenge from rebel candidate Vinod Yadav, brother of rape convict and muscleman Rajballabh Prasad alias Rajballabh Yadav. In 2019, Rajballabhs wife Vibha Devi contested as an RJD candidate. She was pitted against Lok Janshakti Partys Chandan Singh who was elected. Similarly, former RJD MP and muscleman late Mohammad Shahabuddins wife Hena Shahab is contesting from Siwan as an Independent. Although she never demanded the RJD ticket, she is likely to eat into Muslim votes and would mar the prospects of RJD nominee Awadh Bihari Choudhary. The NDA, too, is beset with the rebel threat. BJP MP from Muzaffarpur Ajay Nishad has quit the party and joined Congress. He hopes Congress would field him from Muzaffarpur. Another BJP MP from Sasaram Chedi Paswan is not happy with the party leadership after being denied the ticket from the seat. He was the winner against Congress Meira Kumar in 2019. Chedi is replaced by former MLA Shivesh Ram. The saffron rebel is learnt to have sought an appointment with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. There is a buzz that he may join Congress and fight against Shivesh Ram. The Congress is yet to take a decision. In Buxar, Mithilesh Tiwary, a former MLA from Baikunthpur (in Buxar district) is a BJP candidate from where Ashwini Kumar Choubey won twice. Tiwary is BJPs state general secretary. He won the state polls from Baikunthpur in 2015 but lost in the 2020 assembly polls.

On the other hand, the BJP-led NDA has allotted the ticket to Raj Bhushan Nishad, who had contested previous Lok Sabha elections as a VIP candidate. He was defeated by Ajay Nishad, who is denied ticket this time following an internal survey conducted by the saffron party.

India renews agreement to export electricity to Nepal for next three months

India renews agreement to export electricity to Nepal for next three months At a time when Nepal is facing a power crisis, India on Friday renewed the agreement to export electricity to Nepal for the next three months. Under the agreement, which was to expire on March 31, Nepal can import a total of 554 MW electricity from India between 6 am and 6 pm. Nepal's domestic electricity production currently stands at around 1,200 MW while the country's demand for electricity is 1,800 MW to 2,000 MW during this period. Nepal is experiencing a shortage of electricity as most of the domestic power plants in the country are based on a run-of-the-river system and during winter, there is less water in the rivers. We have received the notification about the renewal of the agreement to export electricity to Nepal until June end, Chandan Ghosh, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) spokesperson, told PTI. The Himalayan nation can import 500 MW of electricity from the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur cross-border transmission line and 54 MW through Tanakpur, Ghosh added. After mid-June, Ghosh said, Nepal will be in a position to export electricity to India. The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported that the NEA had sought permission to import 650MW through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line but with permission only for 500 MW import, Nepal may face 10-hour-long load shedding. Quoting the officials, the report said Nepal is still lobbying with India for power supply during additional hours.

PATNA: The Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), the opposition coalition in Bihar including Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and Left parties on Friday announced that the RJD, its largest constituent, will contest 26 out of the states 40 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming elections. The Congress will contest nine seats, followed by CPI(ML) on 3 seats, and CPI and CPI(M) with one seat each. Former state minister and senior RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui announced the seat-sharing arrangements among constituents of grand alliance in the presence of RJD state president Jagadanand Singh and other leaders. Friday's announcement has come as a rude shock for former MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav who recently joined the Congress by merging merged his party - Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) - with the grand old party. He had staked his claim on the Purnea seat, which has now been given to the RJD. Bima Bharti, who resigned from JD(U) and joined RJD, has been nominated as the RJD candidate from Purnea. Mahagathbandhan announces LS seat-sharing for Bihar; RJD to contest 26, Cong 9

Mahagathbandhan announces LS seat-sharing for Bihar; RJD to contest 26, Cong 9 The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan in Bihar on Friday announced its formula for seat-sharing, with Lalu Prasad's party laying claim on nearly two-thirds of the state's 40 parliamentary constituencies, virtually steamrolling allies - the Congress and three Left parties. The RJD will be contesting 26 seats, nine more than it had fought in 2019 when it drew a blank. The Congress has got nine seats, as many as it had contested in the last elections, followed by CPI(ML) Liberation (three) and CPI and CPI(M) (one each). The belated announcement, coming a day after filing of nomination papers for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls was over, was made at a press conference here addressed by RJD national spokesman and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Kumar Jha, state Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh and state-level leaders of CPI(ML) Liberation, CPI and CPI(M). Tejashwi Yadav, the Mahagathbandhan's leader in the state legislature, was scheduled to address the press conference but remained conspicuous by his absence. Jha said names of candidates would be announced soon and claimed: ''We have arrived at a unanimous decision, demonstrating a cohesiveness that you may not find in the NDA. We will defeat them at the hustings''. Notably, the RJD had fielded its candidates for the four seats of Gaya, Aurangabad, Jamui and Nawada, which go to polls in the first phase, much to the annoyance of its allies, particularly the Congress which wanted to give ticket to former MP Nikhil Kumar. Moreover, CPI and CPI(M) have already announced their candidates for Begusarai and Khagaria seats. According to the seat-sharing formula, the RJD has also wrested from the Congress Purnia, a seat the latter has been contesting in the past few Lok Sabha polls. Recently, Lalu Prasad, the RJD president, gave party ticket for the seat to JD(U) turncoat Bima Bharti, stopping short of making a formal announcement. The Congress had last week inducted Pappu Yadav, a three-term former MP from Purnea, whose wife is also a Rajya Sabha MP of the party. Yadav had been hopeful of getting the ticket from the seat claiming that an assurance to the effect was given to him by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. There were murmurs that Prasad, whose ''blessings'' Yadav had sought before he went to Delhi and merged his Jan Adhikar Party with the Congress, was suggesting that the former Purnea MP try his luck from Madhepura, which he had won on an RJD ticket in 2014, or Supaul which his wife had represented more than once. However, that option, too, seems closed as both seats have been claimed for itself by the RJD and it remains to be seen what is going to be the next move of Yadav who has been dropping hints that he will not flinch from fighting as an Independent from Purnea if the need arose. Among the seats given to the Congress are Kishanganj, Bihar's lone Muslim-majority constituency that the party has been winning for some time, and adjoining Katihar where senior leader Tariq Anwar lost by a thin margin in 2019, having won in 2014 on an NCP ticket. Other seats given to Congress include Patna Sahib, where the BJP has been seemingly invincible, Bhagalpur, where party MLA Ajeet Sharma wanted to field Bollywood actress daughter Neha Sharma, who has refused, and reserved constituency Sasaram, a bastion of late Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram, whose daughter and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, has won the seat a few times but reportedly excused herself this time on account of old age. Other seats assigned to the Congress are Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, West Champaran and Maharajganj. The CPI(ML) Liberation has been given Nalanda, a pocket borough of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose JD(U) has had an uninterrupted run on the seat for decades. The Left party has also been given Arrah, where the sitting BJP MP is Union minister RK Singh, and Karakat, which the NDA has assigned to former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha. However, the RJD has denied the CPI(ML) Liberation Siwan, where the Left party has for long been involved in a bloody feud with late strongman Mohammed Shahabuddin. Having fielded Shahabuddin's widow Hina Shahab in the last two general elections, without success, the RJD is now understood to have given up on her and looking for other candidates. Hina Shahab has, meanwhile, received support from Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM which has said it will campaign for her if she contested as an Independent or on ticket of ''a like-minded party''. The RJD has also kept with itself Saran, formerly represented by Lalu Prasad, where his Singapore-based daughter Rohini Acharya is likely to make her debut. Also in the RJD kitty is Pataliputra, where his eldest daughter Misa Bharti may again try her luck after tasting defeat two times on the trot. A high-decibel contest seems on the cards in Hajipur, where the RJD will be challenging Chirag Paswan's bid to claim his late father Ram Vilas Paswan's political legacy, amid fears that estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras, the sitting MP, could play spoilsport. RJD will also contest Munger, which it seeks to wrest from former JD(U) president Rajiv Ranjan Singh ''Lalan''. The party has given ticket to the wife of gangster Ashok Mahto for the seat. Other RJD seats are Buxar, Banka, Valmiki Nagar, Purvi Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Vaishali, Gopalganj, Ujiyarpur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Jhanjharpur and Araria.

Pappu Yadav raises banner of revolt as grand alliance list to be out today

PATNA: Former MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who merged his Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) with the Congress, reiterated his resolve to contest election from Purnia even as the grand alliance in Bihar is set to announce seat-sharing deal for Lok Sabha election on Friday. It will be suicidal for me if I contest election from somewhere else, Yadav told the media in response to a query on RJD fielding turncoat Bima Bharti as its official candidate from the seat, which Pappu wanted to contest. A consensus on the seat-sharing was reached after two major allies of the alliance - RJD and Congress- held hectic parleys on several seats, which were a bone of contention between them. RJD sources said that former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and other senior leaders of the grand alliance would declare seat sharing pact at a press conference in the state party headquarters. Sources claimed that RJD would contest on 26 seats while Congress on nine seats. Seats from which the Congress is likely to contest are Sasaram, Kishanganj, Katihar, Motihari, West Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Patna Saheb, Supaul and Bhagalpur seats. The CPM may contest Karakat, Ara and Nalanda seats while the CPI is likely to field its candidates from Begusarai seat and CPI(M-L) Khagaria seat. In the remaining seats, the RJD will field its candidates. A clear picture on Purnia and Katihar seats from where Congress wanted to field Pappu Yadav and Tariq Anwar will emerge on Friday. Both Congress and RJD are staking claims to these seats. The sources claimed that RJD agreed to give nine seats to Congress only after the latter conceded to give Chatra and Palamu seats in neighbouring Jharkhand.

Regrettably, Ramu Thakur and Bablu Srivastava have since passed away, while the court acquitted former MLA Munna Shukla. The police had filed a charge sheet on April 11, 1997, relating to the incident that occurred on April 10, 1996. An FIR was lodged at the Mithanpura police station by Ashok Kumar Mishra, a resident of Marcha in the Tajpur police station of Samastipur district. The FIR accused Anand Mohan, Ramu Thakur, Munna Shukla, Bablu Srivastava, and an unknown prisoner of assaulting a life-sentenced prisoner at the Shaheed Khudiram Bose Central Jail, which had been closed since October 3, 1989. The victim allegedly opposed extortion activities within the prison, leading to the altercation. This court ruling holds significant implications for Anand Mohan, particularly amidst the looming Lok Sabha elections. Furthermore, Anand Mohan's wife, former MP Lovely Anand, has recently joined the JDU and is gearing up to contest elections. Speculations suggest that Lovely Anand will vie for the Shivhar seat, which the BJP has allocated to the JDU. Notably, Anand Mohan's son, Chetan Anand, currently serves as the MLA from Shivhar. Chetan Anand had previously defected from Lalu Yadav's party to join Nitish Kumar during a crucial trust vote. Congress Urges PM Modi to Address Caste-Based Census in Bihar Visit

Patna: The Congress launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit to Bihar to inaugurate various development projects, urging him to address the issue of caste-based census in his speech. Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in-charge communications, criticized the PM, anticipating him to disseminate falsehoods during his address. In a Hindi post on X, Ramesh urged the PM to address the significant issue of socio-economic caste census amidst his anticipated statements. He posed four questions to the PM, questioning the delay in conducting the regular census, scheduled for 2021, and the non-disclosure of caste-related data from the 2011 Socio-Economic Caste Census. Ramesh also questioned the vision of the new NDA government in Bihar regarding social and economic justice for disadvantaged communities highlighted in the census. He reiterated Congress's commitment to conducting a nationwide comprehensive socio-economic caste census if voted to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Caste census has been a central theme for the Congress in the upcoming general elections. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch infrastructure-related projects worth around Rs. 12,800 Crores in Bettiah, West Champaran district. On second Bihar tour in less than a week, PM to unveil projects worth Rs 12,800 crore

On second Bihar tour in less than a week, PM to unveil projects worth Rs 12,800 crore Amid a soaring political temperature in Bihar in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Tuesday set foot in the state for the second time in less than a week. Modi is scheduled to visit Bettiah town, the headquarters of the West Champaran district, in the afternoon and unveil projects worth Rs 12,800 crore. Former state BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal, who is the local MP, came out with a video message, urging the people to ''turn up in large numbers and welcome the dearest member of our family''. Jaiswal's refrain of ''humaare parivaar ke sabse pyaare sadasya'' came in the backdrop of the BJP's ''Modi ka Parivaar'' campaign, in response to a jibe of RJD president Lalu Prasad at a rally in Patna on Sunday. Prasad, whose three children, including heir apparent Tejashwi Yadav, are in politics, had taken potshots at Modi, taunting him for having no family of his own. The RJD leader was apparently sore over Modi's speeches at back-to-back rallies in Aurangabad and Begusarai districts of the state a day earlier when the PM had unveiled projects worth more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore. Modi had lambasted RJD, and its ally Congress, for having used the social justice plank as a ''shield'' to justify ''corruption and dynastic politics''. He had also expressed delight over the BJP-led NDA, which had swept the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Bihar, looking in good shape with the return of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who heads the JD(U). By winning back Kumar, the BJP succeeded in breaking his tie-up with RJD, Congress and Left, which would have made Bihar an uphill task for the NDA. The prime minister has of late been travelling to different parts of the country to launch development projects, with just days left for the Election Commission to announce Lok Sabha polls and the imposition of the model code of conduct. Among the projects to be launched at Bettiah are an LPG line between Motihari and Muzaffarpur, which would be inaugurated, and an LPG bottling and storage plant of Indian Oil at Motihari, which would be dedicated to the nation. According to state BJP media co-incharge Danish Eqbal, the PM's aircraft will land at Kushinagar airport in adjoining Uttar Pradesh, which is about 100 km from Bettiah. He will reach the venue of the function in a helicopter.
